I've just started shopping for a boat for skiing
and wakeboarding. I'd rather not pay $25,000 or
more if I can be happy with something that won't
cost as much.

There is a 1995 Ski Brendella Pro Comp for sale
locally for $16,000. Is it a good boat? Is it
a reasonable price? It has 130 hrs. I've seen
it mentioned that Ski Brendella boats were not
known for high-quality a few years back. This
worries me. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Mike

Run away from this boat!!! I bought one, I hated it, I got rid of it. I
bought a MasterCraft three years ago with out a single problem to date.

I looked at one recently but decided against it after reading archived
messages from this news group. Go to google groups and do a search for
ski brendella.....

Can you be more specific about what you hated about the boat?
I can't imagine buying it now, but I'm curious.

On the positive side the boat I owned had excellent five color gelcoat and
nice lines, even the interior was well done. Very nice looking boat overall.
The problems were many. The biggest problem was the large wakes it produced
for slalom, even at 34-36 MPH the slalom wakes were huge. On the flip side
the wakeboard wakes were nice and large The wood floor looked good initially
but were mostly rotted out. I repaired that. Most of my problems then came
with the engine - PCM 285HP. I could not go a week without replacing an
engine part. First the starter, then alternator, the carb was rebuilt, then a
new one installed. The final straw was a cracked head (GT-40 PCM). The heads
were replaced at a fair expense. The hull design just wasn't there. I tried
to get more information from Mike Brendel himself -- he emailed me and sent
me to a MB Sports distributor. I went there and bought a MC. So, three main
problems -- hull design, engine problems, and wood.

Mike,

Don't take everything you read in this group too seriously. That boat was a
US Open Tow Boat and approved by AWSA.

Every manufactuer has problems from time to time. For some reason, when
people die because of Nautiques unorthodox exhaust setup, or when a hull and
deck peel away or a wedge pulls the transom off of a Malibu, or when a
MasterCraft rattles and vibrates because of a super thin layup, its OKAY
because they sell tons of boats. Most of the people in this group are simply
products of very expensive marketing techniques and really have no idea what
they are talking about. Remember, people are going to knock every boat but
their own. No one wants to admit they paid top dollar for average quality.

Drive the boat and ski behind it to determine what you think. I skied behind
that boat at regionals in '95 and thought the wake was excellent. It has
glass floors and stringers and the gel coat work is superior.

Just my input.

Bill

Has this ever happened? Where and when? I don't particularly want to kill
anybody with my boat, but don't know how that particular problem could
happen.

This too--does anybody know of a case where a wedge did that? I have
wondered if it would happen, but have never heard of an actual case. I may
buy a Malibu in the future, and I like the way the wedge works.

Just my curiosity! When things like this are posted without citing an actual
case history, I have no way of knowing whether to believe it or not.

I've never heard of a Wedge pulling the transom out of a Malibu. I've
seen some banged up Wedges from hitting things like submerged
logs but there was no transom damage. It made a mess of the foil but the
bracket and the transom were fine. After personally seeing a Wedged Malibu
thump a submerged tree stump at 23 mph and the only damage being a curled
foil I am a tad bit skeptical on that one. More interesting to me is how
the heck it managed to bang up the foil but miss the prop!?! There is only
a couple of inches on either side of the prop that the wedge extends. Darn
lucky in that particular case.

Bills I don't think that he thought any of the comments about the boats
where true. He was just making the point that some of us have an agenda that
goes along with our posts

Not me of course he was talking about some one else I am sure :-)
