We are looking into buying a boat. This will be our first boat, and we
are no more than "recreational" water skiers/wakeboarders.

All I want to know is, is an engine rated at 190 hp in a 18 or 19 foot
boat going to be strong enough to pull the average skier. I weigh
about 160, but have a few freinds that are around 200 that also would
be sking.

I realize this is probably a faq, and this is not a question about
serious sking, but I'm hoping someone would be able to give me some
help here.

Thanks in advance,
Ed

Probably. But if you can get more, go for it. Before the
Malibu I used several 180-190 hp boats and they were
marginally okay.

Wakeboarding? No sweat. A 200 lber starting both feet in
slalom is another thing. But that is doable as well.

Never heard of 190 HP outboard 200 HP outboards have been used on barefoot
boats for years, but I think he is talking about a I/O in that case 190 hp
is on the low end for adequate power.

HA!
I weigh 160 and wakeboard behind a 90hp beat that!!!
We tried to put more wight in it by filling up coolers but then the boat
wouldn't get planed out!!!!!!
My friend hits sliders behind a 15hp and he weighs more than I do.

Absolutely. It will be fine.

Just prop the boat right. Don't expect a prop set up for 50 mph to be good
at 36 for slalom.

(A good fix for this general issue is a switch-pitch prop, such as a
land-and-sea.)

Note that more horsepower means going from a V6 to a V8, which is quite a
bit heavier. This means that a SMALL amount of additional horsepower (e.g.
20 or 30) might not make much difference. Now going from 190 to 250 or 300
HP WILL make a huge difference - but that big sucking sound you're hearing
is your wallet being emptied :-)

Not difficult at all. I weigh 180 now (was ~195 when I moved down to
Florida) and do my slalom starts deep water and both-feet-in.

Always have, always will.

Its all in the technique.

190hp is probably adequate in an inboard/outboard, however you need to watch
out for the wake. The wake behind an i/o generally is fairly large which
might be good for wakeboarding, however it would be tough for slalom. Had a
friend who dislocated his shoulder slalom skiing when he hit the big wake of
his 18' i/o with a V6. As a first boat, you might be better off with an
outboard. They have better wakes for slalom and you might not damage the
lower unit as quickly as with an i/o that has a deeper draft. I don't
recommend an inboard ski boat to the first timer. You learn to avoid
underwater objects cheaper with an outboard.

Good luck and watch out for PWC's!

190 hp. is plenty of power to ski behind. I weigh about 200 lbs. and
have no problem in a boat 18' with 115 hp outboard.
A good friend of mine has a 1997 Malibu for sale with 315 hp for sale.
Asking $ 19,000, a great deal and in excellent shape.
I am a marine mechanic , and would stand behind the boat as an
excellent buy.
