Wanted some opinions on this. Manual says Tractor Fluid. The fluid I have
in now is a yellow-clear - I'm assuming tractor fluid. Everything else I
read says ATF Mercron/Dexron III. A buddy with the same
boat/engine/transmission put in the tractor fluid and his started foaming.
He has since changed to ATF low foaming fluid and has done fine (for one
year anyways). Is it a bad thing to switch? I'm puzzled...

i had a 92 MC 190 with same tranny (1:1), and i'm pretty sure the manual and
tag on the unit said dexron/mercon. i changed mine a couple times, used
dexron III, put about 300 hrs on the boat - no problems.

Why don't you give Malibu a call and let us know what you find.

I had an '89 Malibu that wanted tractor fluid and My buddy had a '92 (I
think) that used Dextron III. I was always tempted to switch since the
tranny's looked the same from the outside but never did. If you do end up
needing tractor fluid, I found it at NAPA in the country -- a farm
implements store.

FYI - straight from Malibu

This is a comical one! Yes the Merc manual says to use 10 weight tractor
oil. However, I don't know if you've ever tried to find any, but unless you
want to by a 5 gallon drum, then you're probably not going to have much
luck. In any regards, the Mercon Dexron III ATF is a suitable substitute.

Hope this helps!
