      GOLDEN GOPHER VOLLEYBALL SIGNEES ANNOUNCED

[February 4, 1998]

Head volleyball coach Dr. Mike Hebert announced the signing of Lindsey
Berg of Honolulu, Hawaii, and Yvonne Wichert of Russelsheiu, Germany,
to National Volleyball Letters of Intent. The recruiting class will
join the Gophers in the fall of 1998.
Berg, a 5-8 setter, was a four-year letterwinner and three-time Hawaii
co-player of the year at Punahou High School in Honolulu. She played
setter and outside hitter during her stellar high school career but
will concentrate exclusively on the setter position in her career with
the Golden Gophers. Berg, labeled by USA Today as one of the top
volleyball recruits entering her senior season, led Punahou to a
runner-up finish in the 1997 Hawaii State Tournament and a perfect
37-0 run to the title in 1996. Her 1996 squad was ranked among the top
10 in the nation. She was also a three-time all-state and all-league
first-team selection and earned third-team All-America honors while
competing in the 1996 Junior Olympics. Lindsey is the daughter of
Dennis and Tina Berg.

“It isn’t every day that a coach can announce the signing of a quality
setter like Lindsey. She’s a natural,” said Hebert. “She’s played
volleyball all of her life, both indoor and on the beach. She competes
with a maturity and savvy uncommon for a player her age.”

Wichert, a 5-11 outside hitter, joins the Gophers after several years
of club volleyball experience with the V.C. Wiesbaden club in
Russelsheiu, Germany. Like many of her European counterparts entering
collegiate programs in the U.S., Wichert will join the Golden Gophers
as a 20-year-old first-year student-athlete. Yvonne is the daughter of
Alfons and Gisela Wichert.

“Yvonne decided over a year ago that she wanted to attend the
University of Minnesota,” said Hebert. “She is a solid outside hitter
who hits the ball extremely hard, has a fast arm swing and can also
pass the ball. We’re expecting a lot from her.”

Last season, Minnesota finished with a 23-10 record and advanced to
the second round of the NCAA tournament before being eliminated by #8
Brigham Young.

What's the matter No Shanks...did Wisconsin have a down year in
recruiting? :)
What exactly is it that you find so offensive about a 20 year old
athlete coming in as a freshman?

I agree. Not everyone goes directly from high school to college.
Also, what would your thoughts be on junior college transfers? Should
the NCAA require all schools to limit recruiting to 18-year-old
freshman?! How much more micro-managing do you want the NCAA to do?
Keep the NCAA at arm's length or watch the quality of play decline.

Was Berg someone that got away from Shoji?
Kind of curious if UH was one of her considerations.

Don't know if Berg was interested in UH, but she definitely got away.
In my opinion, she is already a better setter and has good or better
a jump serve than anyone on UH's roster.

Shoji is friendly with Dennis Berg, Lindsey's father. In fact, he
scheduled to play North Carolina last season whom Erin Berg, Lindsey's
sister plays for. However the Wahine opted to recruit two middle
blockers this year and I don't know how hard UH recruited her. Who
knows? After all, Sarah Clark wasn't offered a scholarship either.

Punahou players have a tendency to go away for school (see Pepperdine
men's roster) and not that many choose to stay home (with the notable
exception of Tehani Miyashiro).
