Of course, if selected, we will have to extract his head from Acosta's
patookus to give him the trophy.
If change is so wonderful for the sport, why can't we get some different
"commentators." Get Shaw (leave of absence) and Powers (pre Men'sseason,)
to Sydney, give 'em a couple of rounds of golf and some brewskis, and the
takes will at least be entertaining if not entirely coherent.
Reminder: The Blue Curtain Award is to acknowledge those whose absence from
volleyball would be a consummation devoutly to be wish'd. The Curtain is the
infamous partition in the lair of The Earthly Manifestation of
All Evil(tm,) (aka Jabba the Scates) behind which the unclean are banished,
never to be seen again.
Anyone on rsv may nominate anyone in the vb community. Two supporting
nominations and the award is considered given.
The sport has enough trouble from its enemies. Who will save it from its

If memory serves, Sunderland has been promoting this sort of change for
years, especially the one dealing with specialized players--no more
rotations.
My complaint about all the changes is that what works, or rather, may be
appropriate for the international level player, may not be appropriate on
the local scene, or for younger players. IMHO, 14, 15, and 16 year old kids
are going to have a very difficult time adjusting to passing a net serve,
especially given that our other rule sets (most notably Federation) have not
incorporated this change.

Interesting that you would nominate someone for this award who has been one of
the best role models in the sport. This suggests that your opinions should
not be voiced, otherwise you might get the wrath of Ravi. However, you can
conduct yourself any way that you wish on the court and it doesn't matter.
For me, Paul Sunderlund will remain one of my great experiences in being
associated with volleyball. Sorry, we need many more like him associated with
the sport.

Aside from his (or his editor's) misuse of "hearsay" instead of the
likely-intentended "heresy" as a mistake from the language
perspective, what's the problem Ravi-rific? ;-)
As for the net serve stuff....
After watching a weekend full of FIVB let-serve action on the beach, I
question how great a change the net serve is for the two player game
when I see those 3-5% of tape serves that dribbled over straight down.
However the other 95% of tape serves that remained playable arguably
made up for it...even on the beach. For indoor when you've got up to
three guys standing near the net doing nothing else during serve
receive, it's a no-brainer, IMO. Play on!
I was also surprised to find myself quite disappointed as an indoor
player the other night during an open gym when I didn't get to go
after the opponent's tape serves before they hit the floor. Instead,
I got to see everyone stop, and quietly rotate clockwise one position.
Zzzzzzzzz.

Consensus taker
Were you also surprised when the other team touched the net and everyone had to
stop and quietly rotate clockwise one position?
Were you also surprised when the other team hit a ball that touched the
antennae and everyone had to stop and quietly rotate clockwise one position?
Were you also surprised when the other team touched the endline on service and
everyone had to stop and quietly rotate clockwise one position?
Were you also surprised when the other team served from outside the sideline
and everyone had to stop and quietly rotate clockwise one position?
Were you also surprised when the other team touched floor with their hand on
your side of the centerline and everyone had to stop and quietly rotate
clockwise one position?
Todd, why don't we just do away with all the rules and then everyone can just
*play on* to their little old heart's content?
Why are any of those rules above any better a reason to stop play than when the
serve touches the net?
Heck, we don't need any rules and then we don't need any referees :-)

Oh, I dunno... maybe it is all that malarkey about how great RPS
to 25 is for the sport, the let serve, eliminating rotations and using
a long defunct league as an example of its success. The assertion
that the Liberace has improved defense in men's vb, etc.
I suppose publicly promoting that catechism is required for the
media credential.
>As for the net serve stuff....
The only skill where the player has complete control. Hey, let's let
the serves that go out be playable, too. Spectacularity and all that.
I'd still like to see The Donald and Powers cover Sydney.
TD: Hello and welcome everyone to the first round of pool play in men's
volleyball at the Sydney Wallabydome. I'm Don Shaw and with me is
my partner, '84 Gold Medalist Pat "The Hammer of Death" Powers.
PP: How do I work this )*((@*!# thing?
TD: Our first match is... well, we don't really know, we just got in
from a couple of rounds at the Woomera Country Club where I trimmed
Pat's hide and won all of his per diem.
PP: Yeah, well, Westwood Al didn't show up for our match last week
and I'm out of practice
TD: If that's your story, Pat, I say stick with it. Lots of rules
changes since Atlanta; the scoring format is different, technique is
out the window, the matches last all of about five minutes so the
coaches don't have to make any adjustments. So don't mind
our lack of preparation. It doesn't really matter
PP: Speaking of things out the windows, that reminds me of
the time Team USA was playing...
and so forth. They could be the next Louie and Frankie.

Everyone's entitled to voice their opinions. Reasonable people can
disagree in a reasonable fashion. Anyone who censors himself just
because he's afraid of getting a Blue Curtain Award nomination probably
isn't worth listening to in the first place.

Not to mention that kids 14, 15 and 16 aren't going to acquire ANY
skills if they're allowed to wallow exclusively in only the front or
back row.
And such a system would be brutal on the ego. While defense has its
grace and its importance, we all know that the goons in the front row
would get all the glory. None too heartening to the six-footer who is
already out of the running on most college and many high school teams.
Furtheremore, if you're 14 and they stick you in the back row all the
time, how long do you think you'll endure volleyball before you find
another, more egalitarian sport? If you go to the local rec center for
pick-up ball and some 6'6" goons plant themselves at the net, are you
going to enjoy yourself while they rifle wallballs at your head?
If the international game wants to self-destruct (and continue its
tradition of crappy marketing), so be it. But proposals such as these
must not extend to the lower levels.
I find the let serve rule to be an excellent idea, so far. You're very
right about the more common kind: why should they end an otherwise
decent rally? And the dribble-overs... I saw one in WL USA v Poland
and it was an opportunity for a really sharp defensive play. Why didn't
they do this ten years ago?

We are playing kind of a shorthanded version of "Kot'baval" on the other side
of the curtain. We call our own fouls as RAVI won't send us any refs.
The game is getting better and better!

See, even the guys on the other side of the curtain realize that the MPSF refs
aren't really refs cause as RAVI said "The USA NCAA Men Mountain Pacific Sports

Before you buy.
One point of note. In men's collegiate tennis, or at least in the Pac-10,
they did away with the let serve. If a serve touches the net, it is good,
keep playing. The reason for the change? Players officiate the matches to
some degree and it was felt that some were taking unfair advantage of the
honor of the game.
They kept playing on. No big deal.

Aaron would be proud that one of his favorite referees was wearing a uniform with blue shorts, but it matched the
other referees for once! (Said uniform came complete with red/yellow fashion accessories that were displayed on
more than one occasion). I have a picture to prove it. I want to print it out so that said referee can autograph
it for the quikset! I am still waiting for the other referee to stop dancing to get him to autograph one...

....Ms. Cox for her in-depth interviews?
... USA Volleyball for moving to Colorado Springs (I hate going up there! Anytime a plane has to take off on a
hot day with only enough fuel to get to a nearby city at a lower elevation ain't right! How do they determine the
correct weight to take off safely? What if Marvin was on the same flight and the pilots didn't know?)

I'll second that one because of the Buckeye red dress she wore to the
NCAA finals. My whole squad loved it. It went right along with the
local Hooters sign displaying, "Buckeyes will take the Bruins."
Come to think of it, I think I'd rather see her in a tight white
tank-top and little orange shorts anyway.
Hmmm...let's review the facts here.
Heather (Schoeny) Cox - lefthanded opposite hitter circa. 1992
University of Pacific. Now TV volleyball broadcaster and
straight-man (err... straight-person) to "VO5" Marlowe's
reused-for-last-ten-years myriad of volleyball anecdotes and
Olympic stories. Most famous for the classic "Pizza...definetely
pizza" interview with David McKienzie from the 1999 NCAA
semi-finals.
Ed Ratledge - lovable lefthanded opposite hitter circa. 2000
UCLA. Future Sigmund Freud of the volleyball world, offering
high-cost counseling to whiney AVP stars and disgruntled USA
National Team employees/players utilizing hand puppets and ball
carts.
Could be something brewing here....it's a match made in heaven.
I believe, however, that any offspring would probably end up
being right-handed liberos.

Left-handed/right-brained
P.S. I go to Hooter's strictly for the hot wings. <smirk>
Yeah, not like the tremendous hospitality and sportsmanship shown by UCLA and Bruin
fans when the Finals are held in Pauley every other year.
