A Volleyball tournament was played for the first time ever on the streets of
Belfast. a first such ever event in any city in Ireland or Britain.
Organised by the Northern Ireland Volleyball Association it was the final event
in the weeklong City Centre Sports New Millennium celebration initiative
sponsored by the Belfast City Council. Athletics, Basketball and Cycling
compettions were staged earlier this week on downtown Belfast streets.
Even 5 years ago such an event would have been impossible to envisage because
of the security situation in the area outside the imposing Domed Belfast City
Hall.
For the record the 4 team men's and women's Under 21 years tournament was a
success. Teams representing Belfast (Campbell College), Co. Antrim (Larne
Grammar School), Co. Armagh (Craigavon Aztecs) and Co. Fermanagh (Enniskillen
Blockbusters) attracted much interest in crowds of homegoing workers, evening
shoppers, early clubbers and partygoers as the sun shone on a cool Friday
evening.
Craigavon - the nucleus of the Northern Ireland Junior Women's squad - won
their tournament beating Belfast 25-12, 23-25, and Enniskillen 25-12, 25-19.
Enniskillen and Belfast tied 25-15, 15-25, and the homesters took the decider
31-29.
Enniskillen, Belfast and Larne shared a three way tie in the men's results but
the Westerners took the title on points back to Fermanagh, beating Craigavon
25-20, Larne 25-19, losing to Belfast 23-25.
Belfast beat Craigavon 25-23 but lost 20-25 to Larne
Larne beat Craigavon 25-20, leaving them with 69 points scored ahead of
Craigavon's 63, but behind Belfast's 70 and winners Enniskillen on 73 points.
The teams were presented with Northern Ireland Millennium Festival teeshirts
and Belfast City BFS2K Millennium trophies to conclude an historic and
successful sports initiative in Belfast and N. Ireland and the first street
volleyball in the UK and Ireland.
