Wow...6'10". Is she any good? I never heard of her. I'd think someone with that
much size would be a D-1 player. I recently read an article about the Russian
women's volleyball teams in which a 6'5" player said there a number of younger
girls taller than her in their system. To an average sized Joe like me, that's
unimaginable.

You don't need imagination: check out LBSU Haneef, 6'6" and LMU McFarland
6'6" and I think a few taller around Texas somewhere.

It seems that there are a lot of volleyball players over 6ft5. Are there
others? I believe that a person that tall has to be more athletic playing
volleyball rather than basketball.

Just 10 years ago, when I was in high school, the centers on the local girls
high school basketball teams were all 5'11"-6'. Now it seems every local team
has at least 1 player who is 6'2" to 6'3". I don't know if this increase is
attributable to a trend in height in the overall population, or an interest by
more tall women with sports, but it's a little bit unsettling because I think
if the trend increases more, many average-sized women will be unable to
compete. Volleyball seems to be headed down that same path as basketball now.
I'd be very curious to know whether these super-talls have talent or merely
size. It would be a shame to see a talented 5'6" girl not receive a scholarship
and see an untalented 6'8" player get one.

I agree, but it's a fact of life in high profile sports. Certain
physical attributes height, speed, weight, make a difference in the
recruiting process. While we see sports as a kind of morality play, it
just isn't.
I've never seen Alana Renaud play. I have no idea if she's any
good, but mediocre 6'3" and taller palyers will always attract more
attention than even very talented 5'8" hitters unless that 5'8" player has
a 32" vertical.
I'd be the first one who wanted to see those who worked the
hardest and played the best get the rewards. It's just not the case.

Rich Kern's d1wvb site has an interesting graph related to this
discussion. Here's the URL:

http://www.richkern.com/d1wvb/rosters99/heightdist.asp

Note that while the vast majority of players are between 5-8 and 6-1,
large portions of the population are outside what appears to be the
first standard deviation. In addition, those on the lower end are
more numerous then those on the high end.

I also find it intetesting that the number of 5-11 players are
outnumbered by both 6-0 and 5-10 players. I would guess that either
roster sheets are adjusted for this group or 5-11 players are losing
roster spots as 'tweeners'. (i.e. to short for this, to slow for that,
blah, blah, blah )

Other information of interest:

(non-hybrid players)
Tallest DS: 5-10 (6, ... )
Shortest MB: 5-8 (4, Albany, Lafayette, Navy, South Florida )
Tallest S: 6-2 (3, Michigan State, Nebraska, San Francisco )
Shortest S: 5-1 (1, Albany)

Tallest Team by Average: Iowa State
Iowa State's Wins (2) per average inch: (1st, ~6-1) 0.027
Penn St.'s wins (16) per average Inch: (79th, ~5-10) 0.23
Hawai'is wins (15) per average Inch: (26th, ~5-11) 0.21
Stanford's wins (12) per average Inch: (12th, ~6-0) 0.17
Albany's wins (5) per average Inch: (184th, ~5-7) 0.075

Largest margin (tallest to shortest): Long Beach (15 inces)
Smallest margin (tallest to shortest): Seaton Hall (3 inches)

I should also mention that Rich's site is mostly complete, but some
schools information is not available or has not been provided. All
information is from d1wvb, http://www.richkern.com/d1wvb/index.asp

The facts of life in volleyball are exactly the same as in basketball and that
is YOU CAN'T TEACH HEIGHT. Most coaches believe that if they have a 6ft3(or in
Alana Renaud's case 6ft10) girl, they can teach her the fundamentals of the
game. Of course, that isn't the case. I have done some coaching in both
basketball and volleyball and once had a 6ft6 15 yr old girl who I thought I
could teach play the game. Fortunately she was an A student, because she
couldn't spike, couldn't slam dunk nor even jump 3 inches off the floor. But
when we see someone that tall, we hope, we pray and we believe we can make a
star out of them.

I'd guess it's roster tweeking... I'm 5'11 and one half inch, and people
come up to me all the time and insist that I'm 6'1... it seems like once a
person gets into the 5'11 range, they feel free to pad it up an inch or
so.
