I am wondering if there is such a thing as a summer adult volleyball
camp. I would love to take a week or so vacation and go play a lot of
volleyball and get better. Looking on the web I see plenty of camps for
kids, but none for adults. Can anyone give me some pointers? Ideally I
could go for 4 or 5 days, and I am willing to travel. If they provided a
place to stay and eat as part of the deal, that would be awesome too. I
am in intermediate player looking to have fun and improve.

Please drop me an e-mail note, though I will of course look for answers
here as well. I mangled the reply address to foil spammers (wish me
luck!), so my real address is spelled out below.

Thanks!

Check out the "Advice for a new adult player" thread in this group;
Todd recommends Pat Powers' clinics
(www-bcf.usc.edu/~ppowers/Clinic.htm).

There are some other adult camps around. Check out the back of a
current Volleyball magazine...most are for juniors but not all.
The ones I've found so far is Bob Bertucci VB (www.bobbertucci.com),
Durango (www.durangocamps.com) and UCLA/Al Scates
(www.uclabruins.com). I don't know anything about any of these, but
in general they are weekends (2-3 days), less than what you are
looking for but maybe your only option. Also, people I know around
here (Chicago area) have gone to a weekend camp that they loved but
I've never gotten any of the details on it (this is a few years ago).

I'm really interested in the Durango camp; it'd be cool to visit rel-
atives in Denver, do the camp, and also some camping/hiking/rafting.
The Rockies are great. I asked in this group about Durango a few
weeks ago but didn't get any response.

Good luck. It's a great game both physically and mentally. I love
it.

Can't tell you anything about the camp, but went to school at Fort Lewis
College and lived in Durango.

My Personal Suggestion - Go! You won't regret it!

Make sure you ride the narrow gauge train while you are there, see Mesa Verde
(Anazazi Ruins). If you are a rock climber, you will be in one of the best
sandstone climbing areas in the US. Ten minutes out of town and some very
serious cliffs, serious bouldering and short climbing area right in town, at
the X-Rock area. Great Night Life, incredible scenery, tons of 14,000 ft
mountains to climb or hike. Animas River to kayak (BTW Animas river means river
of lost souls if i remember correctly) and all that is virtually in town.

Want to drive around? Canyonlands, Grand Canyon, 4 corners, Monument Park all
pretty much just around the corner (Well, for out there anyway)

A Friend that came to visit me at College still hasn't left and that's been
close to 30 years ago.

Make sure you buy a round trip ticket cause you won't want to leave!

Forgot to mention, when you get to Denver (after Durango) to visit your
relatives, go to Washington Park on Tuesday and Thursday evenigs (after 5), you
will most likely see about 30-50 nets set up with people playing doubles on the
grass and in most cases they will let you walk up and challenge to get a game.
Lots of other places to play too, just ask around.

Used to live in Denver and it's Another Great Place to Live, and especially
play volleyball, make sure you buy that round trip ticket, cause you might not
come back to wherever you live.

TZ> Check out the ... UCLA/Al Scates (www.uclabruins.com) [camp]

I attended UCLA's camp last year. It's a two day (Sat & Sun) camp
which was mostly taught by John Speraw and Paul Nihipali. Brandon
Taliaferro was there for half a day and Al Scates was there for the
serving 'skill'...

Skill levels of the participants varied from a club player at U of
Michigan down to those who were just starting out... Skill teaching
pace was good. (they pushed us along without leaving the beginners
behind) Then they ran us through some entertaining
drills... (short-court, etc.)

It was oriented on developing individual skills, and only touched
lightly on team topics... We did get to scrimmage against a couple of
teams from the boys camp that was going on, they crushed us but our
teams were just thrown together at the last minute without much team
play... I know, excuses, excuses... =)

It was Good Stuff(tm) when it comes to having fun playing a game that
you enjoy... John and Paul were entertaining and instructive... The
drills were good and didn't leave me physically ailing which was a
concern for me going in.. To top it all off, I played some relatively
good volleyball after 'camping' over the weekend with the UCLA folks.
Overall I would say it was money well spent...

The cost at the time was $150 (I think) and they had lodging available
on campus for $80/per. I did not stay on campus, so I don't know if
this is worth it or not...

Ravi, I don't know if you consider this a 'review' or not, but it
might have to do in the long run...

Closer to the mid-west, the IA USAV region listed an adult camp at
Saint Louis U. on July 16 & July 23. Unfortunately they don't have
any further information.. (and someone ought to talk to them about the
speed those pages load.. *feh* =)

Your USAV region's site (Michiana) pointed me to the national site:

http://usavolleyball.org/youth/camps_99_2.htm

Which had the following possibility in WI:

School: Milwaukee Sting Volleyball Club
Camp: Adult Player Camp
Location: Milwaukee, WI
Phone: 414/476-4591
Email: jh...@execpc.com
Web-Site: www.milwaukeestingvb.org
Commuter Cost: $75 Resident Cost: local hotel rates
Camp Start Date: July 31st
Camp End Date: August 1st

In addition, I would be surprised if any camp that is for high school
boys (17+) wouldn't let you attend... They can take the beating. (The
kids that is... =) There was some talk about that being allowed for
the boys camp that was running in parallel with the adult camp at
UCLA... For instance, you could attend the first five days of the boys
camp, then slide on over into the adult camp for the last two days...
Although I would guess that by the end of the week, the boys camp
would be more competitive..

Good luck...

Oh, I think it speaks volumes, Scott. What was Al serving?

I've been to some adult vb camps but they are not being offered this
year to my knowledge. I know also that $atanfjord does adult vb camps every
year and these have been well-regarded by attendees. I am sure TAJ has the
contact info and will post.

Long Beach State did two a couple of years ago: In '97
Men's Team: Andy Read, Alan Knipe, and a little bit of Ray Ratelle teaching
about 9 to 12 of us. 4 nights, _excellent_ instruction. Players helping
included Misty May, Gaby Amar, and Scott Faber.

crowd of folks

Marv Vader was set to do an adult camp last summer but bailed due to some
hoohaw about the National Team. He's doing his kids camp this year but no
adult camp to the best of my knowledge.

errr... =)

All things considered, I'm surprised that you and Al don't get along
better... =) He didn't seem to favor the (new at that time) overhand
passing rule saying, "We just catch it and throw it up to the setter."
He also didn't say anything good about the libero... (but stopped short
of calling it the liberache... =) Although I don't recall the
tooti-fruti ball being brought up... *snicker*

As I've posted before, some of us ate lunch with him during which I
asked if he was planning on playing in my neck of the woods anytime
soon. He said no, but I'm not sure either of us realized that the
final four was going to be in Fort Wayne this year... (although
calling that my neck of the woods is a considerable stretch =)

That he did... He was actually there more then Brian Rofer who was
supposed to be the head cheese... In all fairness, the boys camp was
most likely more interesting to both considering that's where they get
a chance to look at future talent...

These are the kind of opportunities that I would love to get to... On
the good side, I've been considering attending a CAP clinic and it
sounds better all the time.. Some of the players in the IC area have
been attempting to get me into ref'ing or coaching for a couple of
years now, but I'm not sure either would be my cup of tea...

Time will tell... off to the courts for now... =)

Been there, done that :-) Of course it was about 20 yrs ago...

I've been climbing a few times but don't really get into it. Hiking/
camping/backpacking fit the bill, though.

I agree, CO is great. I like the Chicago area quite a lot, and with
family here I'm not likely to leave. But if I were to do it, CO would
be the place I would look to.

Only thing I miss living here is mountains/hills. IL is just too dang
FLAT!

Only thing CO is missing is a big body of water to replace Lake
Michigan and the Chicago lakeshore...

(and for everybody who's going to say it, thanks but no, I don't want
to live in California even though it has both shoreline and texture to
the land. Oregon, now, just maybe...)

Yeah, yeah, way off topic for this ng. No more, I promise.

Oh, wait...
Michael, thanks for the suggestion of Denver pick-up games
in your other reply.

I attended a very good adult camp at Graceland College (southern Iowa) that
is held over the 4th of July weekend each year. Many people attend every
year. I recommend it highly.

Could be the one some friends of mine have been to (it was somewhere in Iowa,
and 4th of July sounds familiar). I looked through www.graceland.edu's web
site and can't find anything about it, just basketball (yeach, phooey) camps.
Do you have any contact info?

Thanks, Tom

I can second that Graceland College runs an excellent adult
camp! Fun, geared for adults, lots of contact with the ball,
quality coaches, lodging and meals included, fun, fun, fun.

I received a private reply to my own similar query, from YASA (yet
another satisfied attendee). Stew McDole (McD...@Graceland.edu) was
given as the contact info. I haven't followed up on this yet.

This person also reiterated what others have told me in the past --
one better be in good condition in order to get the most from the

them? Doing a search turned up a page with lots of clinics that
even mentioned Graceland College, but there was no clinic entered

Do you have any of your old contact info, Michelle?

You got it, Stew Mcdole has been running the adult camp since 1972, maybe 71.
Your email is correct also. The reason for the being in shape (having head
coached the camp many years) is simple..you are doing basically doing three a
days.

Day 1, Afteroon 2-5 skill testing
evening 6:30-9:00 Pass Set hit drills and games

Day 2,3, and maybe 4, 8:30 am to 11, 1-4, 6-830...against players at your
skill level. Coed play also happens.

Day 4/5, Morning Tourney, and send off...

Day three morning, everyone over 30 is walking down the stairs backwards to
the gym, or sleeping in, sore as can be. Only the 20 somethings are playing
after hours.

Each nite of course you go to the Pizza hut and tell volleyball tales until 2
am.

It is a great experience...

I have news for you, when I attended this camp I was 20-something, in great
shape
and I was walking backwards on day 3.

Of course, our coach was John Blair, and he ran us through the meat grinder
for
the first two days. But we loved it anyway. This was...1979.

That is because going to the Pizza Hut is about the only thing to do in
Lamoni.
Well of course you could cheat and drive down to Missouri (4 miles away),
buy
beer and...

that is another story for another day :-)

I hope you didn't take anything in what I said to mean that I thought I would
BE ABLE TO do better than the 30-somethings you referred to earlier. Only
that I took a challenge from it...

Hey, I was in high school then. And yeah I saw Joe Arkin's comment re age
also...

BTW, for those considering this, I received snail-mail on the Durango camp a
couple days ago. Almost no info in it; the web site has much more. But it
*does* list the adult camp's head coach as Butch May. As I was checking to
verify my 99% confidence that he is Misty's father (didn't want to spread any
bad info on UseNet after all) I came across the transcript from a 1998 chat
with John Kessel in which Pat Powers mentions Butch as the person he learned
VB from.
