PREP NOTES
Laguna Beach's Styles Is Academically Ineligible for Volleyball Playoffs
Laguna Beach's Dan Styles has been DECLARED ACADEMICALLY INELIGIBLE
for the Southern Section Division I volleyball playoffs that began Friday.
Styles was a first-team all-county selection last season and helped
the Artists (15-1), the top-ranked team in Orange County, earn the No. 3
seeding for the playoffs. Laguna Beach plays host to Santa Margarita
Friday.
BOYS' VOLLEYBALL
Montclair Prep* d. Imperial, 12-15, 15-8, 15-7, 15-8--Carlos Roubicek
had 20 kills and Brian Reder added 10 for the winners in the wild-card
match of the Southern Section Division III playoffs.
Josh Holtzman added 30 assists for Montclair Prep (9-6), which plays
at Village Christian in a first-round match Friday. * Lost in Fridays
match to Village Christian in 3. I was an Official. More later when I
find my notes on the match.
L.A CITY VOLLEYBALL
University will defend its City Section 4-A boys' volleyball title
Friday night. Fairfax will play for the 3-A championship. But one area
school will be conspicuously missing from what use to be an all-Westside
event. Despite holding a two-game edge, Venice could not stop the
hitting of Dickie Purcell and Rudy Flores. Bell defeated the Gondoliers,
12-15, 9-15, 15-12, 15-6, 16-14, in the 4-A semifinals Tuesday at Venice.
The Gondoliers, who have two of the best outside hitters in the City,
suddenly find themselves with a power shortage. Flores had 27 kills
and Purcell had 22 to lead the Eagles. Pat Lennon (19 kills) and Jon
Gaydowski (11 kills, eight blocks) led the Gondoliers (15-3).
SAN GABRIEL VALLEY
Area high schools open play Friday in the Southern Section boys'
volleyball playoffs. Here's a look at the matches involving area teams
by division:
Division I: Arcadia play host to Esperanza.
Division II: Saugus at San Gabriel and Claremont at Santa Fe.
Division III: South Pasadena at Campbell Hall; Stephen Wise or
Murphy* at San Marino; Glendale Academy at La Salle and Bishop Amat at
Bosco Tech. *Murphy won this seed match in 3 going away. I had a
ringside seat next to the net.

Irvine looked stunned. Fountain Valley's coach couldn't explain it.

But Baron middle blocker Dave Arvesen had only three words after
watching his team's thrilling five-game victory.

"That was insane," Arvesen said.

No one would have blinked if Sunset League champion Fountain Valley
had bowed out of the Southern Section Division I boys' volleyball
playoffs after Tuesday's second-round match. But the Barons rallied after
trailing two games to one and facing a 14-12 deficit in Game 5.

But Fountain Valley (16-2) didn't flinch. At least Coach Lori
Biller's players didn't after posting a 15-13, 7-15, 10-15, 15-12, 17-15
victory.

"I don't know where this one came from," Biller said. "The guys keep
telling me they're going to make me a comeback coach. I don't like this
kind of match. But when we were down, the guys were out there smiling."

The Barons had plenty to celebrate after Kurt Seckington, who had 76
assists, blocked Jeff Miller at match point. Middle blocker Phil Domingo
had nine of his 20 kills in Game 5 and Chris Kosty (29 kills) and Ed
Ratledge (27 kills) provided the firepower to help the Barons advance.

Fountain Valley will play San Clemente in the quarterfinals Friday
although one of its top players, Arvesen, watched from the sideline.

Arvesen, an All-Sunset League middle blocker last season, has been
sidelined after being diagnosed with a heart arrythmia. According to
Biller, Arvesen has a similar heart condition to the one that former
Loyola Marymount basketball player Hank Gathers had. Gathers died playing
college basketball in 1990.

"It's a condition that's caused by adrenaline," Biller said. "So Dave
can't do anything that would stimulate that."

Just watching Tuesday's match made Arvesen nervous.

Mark Ramirez (33 kills), Luke Carlson (23 kills, five blocks) and
setter Grant Donaldson (80 assists) helped Irvine (15-3) take control
with convincing victories in games 2 and 3.

"Irvine is so well-coached, it's hard to find a weakness," Biller
said.

If the Barons didn't find the weakness, they still found a way to win.
Fountain Valley also trailed, 15-14, in Game 5 but still managed to
rally.

"It might be harder watching than playing," Arvesen said.

In other Division I matches:

San Clemente 3, Santa Margarita 1--Gabe Gardner had 24 kills for
visiting San Clemente (15-5) which won, 16-14, 15-11, 13-15, 15-10. Santa
Margarita ends 10-10.

Huntington Beach 3, Capistrano Valley 0--Jody Cook-Fisher had nine
kills and Zack Montgomery had six kills to lead Huntington Beach (17-2)
over Capistrano Valley 15-5, 15-6, 15-8. The Oilers will play top-seeded
Los Angeles Loyola Friday.

Capistrano Valley, the South Coast League champion, ends 12-6.

Los Angeles Loyola 3, Mater Dei 0--Brad Walsh had 12 kills for Loyola
(17-1), which won, 15-4, 15-2, 15-12. Mark Pozsgai had eight kills for
Mater Dei (10-8).

Santa Barbara 3, Esperanza 1--Ryan Rex had 22 kills, Dan Harrington
had 18 kills and Geoff Cunningham had 33 assists for Esperanza (11-7)
which lost to third-seeded Santa Barbara 15-11, 15-12, 15-5, 15-7.

In Division II:

Tustin 3, Upland 0--Curtis Jackson had 15 kills, Luke Loveless had 10
kills and Greg Logan had 41 assists for top-seeded Tustin (15-1), which
defeated Upland (16-2) 15-5, 15-3, 15-7. Tustin advanced to play Cypress,
a 15-10, 8-15, 11-15, 15-13, 15-6 winner over Cerritos Valley Christian.

Calvary Chapel 3, La Quinta 0--Robert Schildts had 17 kills in the 15-
5, 15-9, 15-2 victory for third-seeded Calvary Chapel (13-3), which
advanced to play Long Beach Poly, a 15-3, 15-6, 15-13 winner over
Foothill (11-5).

Trung Khuu had six kills for Garden Grove League co-champion La
Quinta (15-3).

Orange 3, Lynwood 0--Andy Lauridsen had 19 kills and John Tran had 40
assists for Orange (18-2), which won 15-12, 15-8, 15-11. Orange will play
the Canyon Country Canyon-Lakewood winner.

Go Go Cubs
Huntington Beach finally got to see what it had only heard about. When
it was over, Los Angeles Loyola had showed why it is the top-seeded team
in Division I boys' volleyball, defeating the Oilers, 15-1, 17-15, 15-2
in the quarterfinals Friday at Loyola. Loyola came within an eyelash of
meeting the Oilers in the final last season, but lost a grueling 3 1/2-
hour match to Laguna Beach, which then fell to Huntington Beach in the
title match. The Cubs (18-1) needed only 1 1/2 hours to dispose of the
defending champions and return to the semifinals, where they will face
Santa Barbara Wednesday. Huntington Beach (17-3) received a quick dose
of the Cubs' abilities in the first game when the Oilers fell behind, 7-0.
Matt Belikoff and Greg Markham provided a block to get Huntington
Beach on the board, but Loyola finished the game with eight consecutive
points. The Oilers put together its first run of the match midway
through Game 2 as Zack Montgomery served five points in a row to give his
team a 7-4 lead. However, Loyola answered with a run of its own and Lee
Bennett and Brad Walsh blocked to give Loyola a 14-7 lead. But Huntington
Beach dug in its heels and moved back ahead, 15-14, on Jody Cook-Fisher's
kill. After trading several sideouts, Cook-Fisher lined his spike wide
and setter Greg Markham was called for bumping the net. Walsh and Bryan
Dunne then came up with two tough digs and Patrick Klein-son of Bob Klein
the former Rams and Chargers tightend, and brother of Stanford great
Christin Klein- slammed his spike off the floor for the game-winning
point.

In Division II matches:
Tustin 3, Cypress 0--Curtis Jackson had 21 kills, Aaron Kraus had 10
kills and three aces and Greg Logan had 53 assists to lead Tustin (16-1),
15-9, 15-4, 17-15. Top-seeded Tustin will play Lakewood, which defeated
Orange, 15-10, 15-17, 15-11, 12-15, 15-9.
Calvary Chapel 3, Long Beach Poly 2--Aaron Fountain had 27 kills and
Jason Mandall added 26 for third-seeded Calvary Chapel which won, 13-15,
15-11, 11-15, 15-9, 15-11. Calvary Chapel (14-3) will play the Downey
Warren-Palmdale Highland winner.

Campbell Hall Falls Fast to Santa Ynez
It took just over an hour for middle blocker George Romaine to lead top-
seeded Santa Ynez High to a 15-5,15-8, 15-4 victory over Campbell Hall in
a semifinal match of the Southern Section Division III boys' volleyball
playoffs Wednesday night. Romaine, a 6-foot-7 senior who is headed to
Pepperdine, had 25 kills, nine blocks and four digs for the Pirates (21-
0). Middle blocker Dylan Herrick had 10 kills, six blocks, three digs
and three aces for Campbell Hall (16-4) and outside hitter Eric Hassan
added 12 kills, four digs and four blocks. But an inability to contain
Romaine did in the Vikings. The Vikings tied the score in the first
game, 1-1, on ace by Hassan, but it was a case of too much Romaine for
the Vikings as the setter-hitter combination of Mike Shackelford-to-
Romaine translated into a 15-5 victory. Santa Ynez took a 4-0 lead in
the second game with Romaine accounting for three of the points on kills.
The Vikings cut the deficit to 7-4 on a Herrick kill, but consecutive
aces by Romaine stopped the rally. Outside hitter Andy Witt followed
with three kills to fuel a 15-8 victory. The third game started slowly,
but Romaine changed that with an emphatic kill to send the Pirates on
their way. Santa Ynez led, 3-2, before taking a 7-2 lead.
Campbell Hall trimmed the deficit to 8-4, but could draw no closer.
The Pirates closed out the game--and the match--with a 7-0 run.

VOLLEYBALL; Loyola Swings it's way into Division I Finals
Top-seeded Loyola took a big step in its drive to win the Southern
Section Division I boys' volleyball title by eliminating Santa Barbara,
15-9, 15-7, 15-3, in the semi-final Wednesday night at Loyola.
The Cubs (19-1) received another balanced attack with Pat Klein
generating 16 kills, Dan Farmer 15 and Brad Walsh 14. Defensively, Loyola
was led by Walsh and Farmer with eight digs. Klein produced six blocks.
Loyola's Youthful Coach Eric Wells, 21, principled the Cubs as they
fought side-out to side-out with the Dons, for the first 30 minutes of
game one. Exploding in mid-game with a run of 7 points, the Cubs started
to mentally dominated the "yellowed hairdoed" Don's--who had dyed their
hair to match the color of their olive and yellow uniforms and to show
team unity.
Game 2 and 3 were repeats of game one, only in each of the following
games the Don's quit their scoring charge early then earlier in the game.
Total match time one hour and forty minutes.
Boasting 11 Seniors and 4 Juniors, the Clubs average team height is 6'3"
and 190 Pounds. For those of you on Prodigy and AOL who correspond with
Senior Geoff Brown, Loyola #16, He sat on the bench and did not play in
any of the match. Geoff is a Middle Blocker, 6'5" and 205 pounds,
University of California Santa Barbara bound, the fact that he didn't
play in this match shows the level and depth of talent the Cubs have this
season. It's conduct of players like Geoff Brown, and the other 8
players who didn't enter the match for Loyola, that place the Cubs as the
number one seed against San Clemente--who defeated Mira Costa in five--
this weekend at Cypress College.

SOUTHERN SECTION CHAMPIONSHIPS HIGH SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL
In Division 1 this was supposed to be Loyola's year to win the
Southern Section boys' volleyball championship. The Cubs didn't
disappoint their fans. Senior Dan Farmer had 23 kills and twin brother
Tim Farmer added 17 to help top-seeded Loyola defeat San Clemente, 13-15,
15-12, 15-5, 15-8, in the championship match at Cypress College on
Saturday. The Cubs (20-1) won their first title since 1988, giving them
six championships, most of any school in the section. But No. 6 came
after the Cubs weathered a strong Game 1 performance from the unseeded
Tritons (17-6). San Clemente, playing in its first final since 1981,
was led by 6-foot-9 outside hitter Gabe Gardner, who had a match-high 29
kills and four blocks, and Corin Bemus, who had 22 kills. But Loyola
had too much balance, strength and size. Setter Steve Dunne (62
assists) led the balanced attack. In addition to the 6-4 Farmer twins, 6-
4 outside hitter Pat Klein had 12 kills, 6-5 middle blocker Lee Bennett
had 11 and 6-2 outside hitter Brad Walsh had 10.

While glimpsing over a small town area paper ( The Orange County Pilot to
be exact) I was able to put together more information on the High School
All-Star volleyball games that will be played on Thursday at Newport
Harbor High-- the things I do to cover Volleyball at it's finest. The
girls match will start at 6 p.m.. The North-South team structure will
feature a scoring format of three games to 31 points with rally scoring
(a point scored on every serve). High school seniors from many of the
county's top volleyball schools will be competing. The 1994-95 Orange
County high school girls season found Calvary Chapel, Newport Harbor and
Huntington Beach playing for state championships and many other county
teams in sectional and state playoffs. Newport Harbor's girls won the
mythical national high school championship.. Rosters for Thursday's
girls match, with high school, position and college plans follow:
NORTH GIRLS
1. Erin McCown, Edison, oh, UC Santa Barbara;
2. Kristy Kierulff, Esperanza, oh, Long Beach State;
3. Kristin Moro, Fountain Valley, oh, U.San Diego;
4. Jennifer Coopman, Sunny Hills, oh, UCLA;
5. Jennifer Porterfield, Edison, mb, Duquesne;
6. Laura Echolds, Esperanza, mb, Santa Clara;
7. Tegan Catlin, Sunny Hills, mb, Bradley;

The play alternated from spectacular to ragged and there was a smattering
of the expected and unexpected in the girls' Orange County All-Star
matches. It was just another typical, feel-good, all-star gathering
Newport Harbor's Misty May, everyones Orange County player of the year,
was named MVP of the girls' match after leading the South to a three-game
sweep of the North, 21-10, 22-20, 21-16--rally scoring to 21 points.
May, who will play at Long Beach State next season, played setter,
outside hitter and roamed just about everywhere, displaying the talents
that helped the Sailors win the State and Southern Section Division I
championships this season. Her coach, Newport Harbor's Dan Glenn, was
on the sidelines with Calvary Chapel's Jim Downey coaching a loaded South
unit. Although Esperanza's Laura Echolds (five kills) and Kristy Kierulff
and Fountain Valley's Kristin Moro tried to rally the North, the South
was too overpowering. Dana Hills' Jenny Kessy, the South Coast League
MVP who will play at USC next season, had seven kills for the South in
Game 1, mostly on sets from May. Laguna Beach's Lisa Ravensberg, who has
signed with University of San Diego, had three blocks in Game 1.
How deep was the South's first unit? Two Colorado ( Glory Glory
Colorado---stand here and sing CU fight song ) recruits--Newport Harbor's
Melissa Schutz and Calvary Chapel's Courtney Owens--were virtual non-
factors in Game 1 and it still cruised to a 21-10 victory. Schutz, who
shared league MVP honors with May, and Owens, the section and state
Division IV MVP, each had only one kill in Game 1.
How was it for University High School's Chrissie Lukasiewicz, playing
her last Orange County game for the North you ask. "It was a long night
and just once I'd like to have Kristy (May) on my side of the net." As
Lukasiewicz is on her way to Duke, and May will be playing for Long Beach
State next season this will most likely never happen. When interviewed
after the game Linda Lukasiewicz, Chrissie's mother was too emotional to
talk, unlike the kid pulling on her arm asking if he got Chrissie's room
when she went away to Duke.

I think it is appropriate to mention that as a result of
the signees you mentioned -- Courtney Owens (Calvary Chapel
HS), Melissa Schutz (Newport Harbor) -- as well as two other
sensational players -- Tegan Lynch (Aptos in Northern
Calif.) and Sarah Lodge (Cypress Creek in Houston, Tx.)...
Colorado, your ala mater, has put together "what may be
the most highly-touted class of recruits in Colorado
volleyball history"... and certainly one of the best,
most complete classes of recruits in the country...!!!

It had better be good (and it is) because Nebraska may have had the best
class in the country with Avery, Saunders, Nepo, and Krondak.

Steve, Tom...

(...in my humble opinion)

I would say that, in '95, Nebraska and Colorado out-recruited all the
Pac-10 programs combined... (!)

Yet more evidence that the center of vollyeball gravity is shifting
further and further east of California every year...
