#11 UCLA d. #21 Colorado 3-1
30-15, 30-28, 26-30, 30-27
After a poor start in G1, Colorado played a surprisingly close match against
UCLA. All of the teams in the tournament had moments of brilliance mixed in
with moments of sloppiness. For Colorado, this tournament may be a bruiser of a
learning experience.
G1: when I arrived Colorado was already trailing 9-15 and things did not get any
better. Leading 23-15, UCLA served out the match. Murphy put down game point
for the Bruins. UCLA took risks and served tough. UCLA paid for it with 5
service errors, but made up for them with better passing and hitting for a high
percentage. UCLA outhit CU .424 to -.091, out-blocked them 2-1 and out-dug them
13-9. UCLA was led by Fendrick 1B/5K and Murphy 5K. CU was led by Fredrickson
3K.
G2: Much closer. In fact, CU had its chances to take this one. A rash of UCLA
serving errors kept Colorado in the game. Trailing 13-15, CU managed to take
the lead and built it up to 24-20 before allowing UCLA back into the game. UCLA
eventually came back to take G2 on their second attempt. Eckmier put down game
point. UCLA was led by Cullen 1B/5K, Fendrick and Murphy with 1B/3K each. CU
was led by Gerlach 4K.
G3: The teams traded points for what seemed like an eternity. Finally, CU took
the lead after trailing 18-19 and never looked back. Hays put down game point
on CU's 2nd attempt. CU was led by Carr 6K. UCLA was led by Fendrick 2B/3K,
Eckmier and Wright with 1B/3K each.
G4: CU had a few very brief leads, but for the most part UCLA was in control of
G4. It took 3 match points to win, but UCLA was never in any real danger in G4.
Cullen put down match point. UCLA was led by Fendrick 6K and Cullen 1B/5K. CU
was led by Taskey 4K.
