As always, the results are down a page in case anyone is trying
not to find out yet.

I came straight home tonight, and went right on line, so perhaps
I'll get in before Tom does ...

One more reason I don't like rally scoring (from a fan's perspective,
but also from every other one) - it is so much easier to have a
scoring error. Tonight, I added a point to Stanford's score
inadvertently - I think that the scoreboard may have, too - but
perhaps I was too busy to notice for a while. Then, it looked
to me that Stanford did not get a point on a service error, which
may have just been me catching up to my earlier error finally, but
might just as easily have been the scoreboard returning to reality -
it is hard to believe that I would not have looked at the scoreboard
for ten rallies, including a time out - but I am certainly not perfect.
It turned out not to matter, but it certainly confused me royally.
My apologies to everyone I buttonholed trying to get that point
scored, including the scorekeeper and Ray Mink, who was the down ref.

Next week Stanford is in Oregon. I think I will see if I can
get to San Jose State Friday (St. Mary's is in town), and then
to Santa Clara on Saturday, when San Jose State comes in for a
rematch of the first round of the NCAA tournament last year
(SJSU won a 5 game thriller).

For the second match in a row, we saw a kill by a libero - this time
it was Pepperdine's libero who got to hit a down ball, and placed it
nicely (as opposed to last night's seeing-eye dig, this one was
intentional).

If you're in the Bay Area, and can't find any volleyball,
let me recommend TheatreWorks' production of Ragtime, playing at
the Mountain View Center for Performing Arts (Castro at Mercy).
They do a really good job of it.

I can't think of any other fillers, so scroll down for the results

Stanford won, 30-26, 30-27, 30-28. The side-out scores were 17-13,
10-8, 14-12.

Pepperdine played: Katie Wilkins (OH), Brie Harris (OH; Kristen Shultz
played all the back row, except for the first two rallies in all three
games, where Harris started in the back row, and for the end of game
two,
when Katy Daly came in to serve, and stayed in - I think - through the
end of the game - I did not notice Harris return, but if Daly did rotate
to the front, it was only for one play. As Daly is an inch taller than
Harris, it is possible she stayed in), Stacy Rouwenhorst (MB; Christina
Hinds was the Libero - I think she played back row whenever Rouwenhorst
was not serving), Lyndsey Hache' (would that really be Haché? MB; Hinds
played her back row, too, but Lindsay Harris came in to serve once in
game two - that backfired, as she served it long), Breegan Mulligan
(OPP),
and Paola Rodriguez (S; Melissa Mehlhorn played for a while in the
middle
of game two, and then the last half of game three - at least I don't see
any notes on her coming out again).

Stanford played: Jennifer Hucke (DS; Sara McGee played MB), Jennifer
Harvey
(MB; Courtney Schultz was the libero, and played all the back row when
Harvey was not serving), Anna Robinson (S), Ashley Ivy (OPP), Logan Tom
(OH),
and Ogonna Nnamani (OH; Schultz played back row whenever she could;
Lindsey Yamasaki came in to serve in games one and two, except that the
last time in game two, Nnamani stayed in to serve; Leahi Hall came in
to serve in game three).

Scoring (Stanford first, comma indicates side-out, with the score
following):

Game 1 (Stanford served first):
1-0 ,,,2-2 2-3 ,,3-4 3-7 ,4-7 5-7 ,5-8 5-9 ,6-9 8-9 ,,9-10 10-10
,10-11 10-13 ,11-13.[End of first rotation]
15-13 ,15-14 15-15 ,16-15 21-15 ,21-16 21-18 ,,22-19 22-20 ,,23-21
23-22
,24-22 26-22 ,,,27-24 27-25 ,28-25.[End of second rotation]
29-25 ,,30-26 [game point came when Logan Tom killed an overpass;
Pepperdine sided out with a Wilkins kill, but Logan Tom got a kill
on a slide play to end the game. If I heard the announcer
correctly,
Stanford hit .302 to Pepperdine's .171; Tom led the match with 7
kills]

Game 2 (the Waves served first):
,,,2-1 3-1 ,,4-2 5-2 ,5-3 5-4 ,6-4 7-4 ,,,,9-6 10-6 ,10-7.
10-8 ,11-8 13-8 ,,,,,,,16-12 16-14 ,,17-15 17-16 ,,18-17.
18-18 ,,,20-19 23-19 ,23-20 23-21 ,24-21 [25-21 - but after a
Pepperdine
time-out, Stanford was penalized for an illegal substitution before
the preceding play when Nnamani came in for the libero - but
Yamasaki was supposed to come in for the libero and then be
replaced,
so the score was changed back to 24-22; Nnamani officially replaced
Yamasaki; and we continue - I don't know if Harvey gets credit for
the kill on the play] ,24-22 ,25-22 26-22 [two Ashley Ivy kills for
the side-out and the point] ,,,,,28-25.
28-26 [as Rouwenhorst, the middle blocker, got a swing at the second
ball]
,,30-27 [Again, Logan Tom got the kill for the side-out for game
point,
but then a service error turned it back over to Pepperdine.
Robinson
and Harvey combined for a block for the game. If I heard the
announcer
correctly, Pepperdine was now down to .163 after two games; Stanford
hit .410 for the game to raise their hitting to .354 after two
games;
Logan Tom was leading the match with 13 kills; Nnamani had 10; three
Waves were tied with seven kills to lead Pepperdine].

Game 3 (Stanford served first):
1-0 ,1-1 1-2 ,2-2 3-2 ,,,,,,6-5 9-5 ,,10-6 11-6 ,,12-7.
15-7 [on an ace that Pepperdine called "in" but no one moved for,
followed by two kills by Logan Tom] ,15-8 15-11 ,,16-12 16-15
,17-15 18-15 ,,19-16 20-16 ,,,,22-18 23-18 ,,24-19.
,24-20 24-22 ,25-22 26-22 ,26-23 26-25 ,,,,28-27 28-28 [on a block
by Hache' and Wilkins on Ivy, 29-28 30-28 [on a Nnamani kill and
a block by Robinson and McGee for the match].

If I have the final stats right, Stanford outhit Pepperdine .344 to
.197;
Logan Tom led with 21 kills to hit .362, and Nnamani hit .480.

Take care.

Mark
