CSU PRODUCTS PACE WOMEN'S OPEN;
TOP-SEEDED MEN'S TEAM DEFEATED IN MOTHERLODE MEN'S PLAY
ASPEN, COLO. - While Colorado State University products Angela Knopf and Krista
Swartzendruber were posting three upset wins in the women's Open, the
top-seeded men's Open team of Curtis Griffin and Kyle Schultz were defeated to
highlight the early action here Sunday (September 1) in the 30th annual
MotherLode Volleyball Classic.
Seeded 26th in the 26-team women's Open, Knopf (Portland, Ore.) and
Swratzendruber (Glenwood Springs, Colo.) followed a Saturday afternoon win to
score 15-4 win Sunday morning over 10th-seeded Tonya Boyd (Aurora, Colo.) and
Kris Bredehoft (Englewood, Colo.).
A second-place finisher Friday in the MotherLode's Co-ed A division with Dan
Dolton (Fort Collins, Colo.), Knopf and Swartzendruber advanced to the
fourth-round of the winner's bracket by upsetting 18th-seeded Linn Ahrendt
(Shoreview, Minn.) and Sandy Brown, (Savage, Minn.) 15-13 Sunday afternoon.
Knopf and Swartzendruber scored their first upset win by defeating
seventh-seeded Tina Hodson (Garland, Tex.) and Debbie Stanford (Plano, Tex.)
15-12 Saturday. Both CSU alums played for the Rams where Knopf has earned
All-American honors. Knopf and Swartzendruber will be playing for a spot in
the "final four" when they face third-seeded Catie Fleisher (Aspen, Colo.) and
Kelly Rowe (Los Angeles, Calif.). A local favorite, Fleisher was also a
standout out at Colorado State.
Erin Galli and Pat Keller, the top-seeded team in the women's Open, won their
first three matches to advance to a Sunday afternoon meeting with fifth-seeded
Julie McGarr (Houston, Tex.) and Samantha Meador (Houston, Tex.) Both Galli
(1992 with Shawn Hoover) and Keller (1993, 1997 and 1999 with Valinda Hilleary)
are former MotherLode women's Open champions.
Griffin, who won four MotherLode men's Open titles with Erik Moore (1995, 1996,
1997 and 1998) and Schultz dropped a 15-7 decision Saturday morning to
33rd-seeded Bryan Gibson (Birmingham, Ala.) and Keith Jones (Nashville, Tenn),
who Jones captured the Coed Open title Friday.
While Griffin and Schultz face a challenge in the contender's bracket where
they must win eight elimination matches to make it to Monday's semifinals in
the 67-team field, Gibson and Jones are now the winningest MotherLode team this
year with four-straight victories this weekend. Gibson and Jones's next match
is against 25th-seeded Dave Rohn (Grand Junction, Colo.) and Scott Wright
(Fruita, Colo.).
The third-seeded men's Open team of Dane Hansen (Raleigh, N. C.) and Ryan Post
(Denver, Colo.) were eliminated Saturday morning after forfeiting an
elimination match due to injuries. The 1999 MotherLode men's Open winner,
Hansen and Post were leading 14-9 in their first match Friday to Erich Hoehne
(Fort Collins, Colo.) and Travis Turner, (Highlands Ranch, Colo.), before the
62nd-seeded rallied to post a 17-15 win as Post was hobbled with knee problems.
Andrew Cavanaugh (Santa Barbara, Calif.), who won the MotherLode's men's
masters title Saturday morning with Eric Anderson (Los Gatos, Calif.), split
his first two Open matches with Sean Fallowfield, a two-time MotherLode Open
winner in 1986 (with Rudy Dvorak) and 1989 (with Roger Clark).
Anderson captured his fifth MotherLode Volleyball Classic men's masters title
in the past seven years as the 45-year old commercial real estate salesman
teamed with Cavanaugh to defeated Tom Pestolesi and Bill Stetson in the finals
Saturday.
With regular partner Kent Kitchel (Santa Cruz, Calif.) sidelined due to right
knee surgery, Anderson (Los Gatos, Calif.) successfully defended his men's
master title with Cavanaugh as the top-seeded team in the 36-team field won
six-straight matches this weekend. Anderson and Kitchel won the MotherLode
master's crowns in 1996, 1997, 1999 and 2001. The pair placed second in 1998
and third in 2000.
With a 15-9 win in the finals Saturday, Anderson and Cavanaugh (39 and an
attorney) scored a 15-4 win over fourth-seeded Pestolesi and Stetson and a
15-11 win over second-seeded Paul Cook (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) and Reed
Stephenson (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) Friday afternoon to advance to the
finals. Cook and Stephenson placed second to Anderson and Kitchel in the 2001
MotherLode men's masters.
After losing to Anderson and Cavanaugh Friday, Pestolesi (42 of Huntington
Beach, Calif.) and Stetson (42 of Manhattan Beach, Calif.) had to win three
elimination matches to advance to the title match, including a 11-4 win
Saturday morning over Cook and Stephenson. Pestolesi is the men's and women's
volleyball coach at Irvine Junior College while Stetson is a physician.
The Colorado volleyball tradition started Thursday with competition in two
men's senior divisions (45 and 50 and over) and the women's masters. With the
final two days featuring the men's and women's open play, the MotherLode
Volleyball Classic runs through Monday at various sites throughout the
Aspen-area. Competition in the men's AA, A, BB and B classes and Women's A, BB
and B divisions started Saturday morning.
Top-seeded Jon Lee (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Don Shaw (Menlo Park, Calif.)
won the men's 50 division for the second-straight year as second-seeded Bill
Noon (Lawton, Okla.) and Ron Smith (Denver, Colo.) had to forfeit the title
match due to Noon's right knee injury.
Thursday's title was Lee's (53 and volleyball coach at Santa Barbara's San
Marcos High School) seventh Motherlode title. The 51-year old Shaw coached the
Stanford women to four NCAA Division I titles in 16 years before becoming the
Cardinal men's volleyball coach last season.
Top-seeded Jon Hastings (San Luis Obispo, Calif.) and Andy Shroeder (Concord,
Calif.) successfully defended their men's 45 title by defeating second-seeded
Bob Blackburn (Sedalia, Colo.) and Mike Fair (Culver City, Calif.) 15-9 for the
title. The title was the second for Hastings (46 and publisher of VOLLEYBALL
Magazine) and Schroeder (46 and salesman).).
Jackie Campbell (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Ilga Celmins (Aptos, Calif.)
captured the women's master's title by defeating Yolanda Munoz (Dallas, Tex.)
and Shannon Smith (Dallas, Tex.) 15-8 in the title match. The top-seeded
Campbell (38 and a planner for Santa Barbara County) and Celmins (37 and a
chemical engineer) won their first MotherLode titles.
Four titles in the Coed divisions were decided Friday. The Coed Open crown was
won by Jones (Henderson, Tenn.) and Wendy Martin (St. Petersburg Beach, Fla.)
by defeating Annette Gregg (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) and Dustin Townsend
(Encinitas, Calif.) 15-11 in the finals.
The Coed A championship was captured by Warren Furey (Hermosa Beach, Calif.)
and Julie Kaulius (Aurora, Colo.), who defeated Dolton and Knopf 15-10 for the
title. The Coed BB title was won by Denny Jackson (Kansas City, Mo.) and Maria
Stork (Kansas City, Mo.), who scored a 15-13 win over Cat and Randy Gibson
(Novato, Calif.). The Coed B crown was netted by Allison Less (Davenport,
Iowa) and Chris Zelvis (Glendale, Ariz.). The pair defeated April Eaton
(Phoenix, Ariz.) and Dan Maki (Scottsdale, Ariz.) 15-11 in the finals.
With 17 total divisions of play in men's (8 classes), women's (5) and co-ed (4)
divisions, the MotherLode Volleyball Classic is the "most comprehensive" beach
volleyball tournament in North America with some of the best beach volleyball
