MANHATTAN BEACH, Calif., Jan 30, 2002 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- The
Association of Volleyball Professionals (AVP) and NBC Sports announced an
agreement today returning AVP Pro Beach Volleyball to NBC with two live,
summertime broadcasts during the tour's 2002 season. As part of this new
television alliance both AVP men's and women's beach volleyball matches will be
spotlighted on NBC.
The Michelob Light Manhattan Beach Open (August 8-11), which has been the AVP's
marquee event since the tour was founded by current Commissioner Leonard Armato
in 1983, will be broadcast live on NBC Sunday, August 11, from 4-6 p.m. (ET)
and will benefit from a large, lead-in audience following NBC's coverage of
NASCAR's Watkins Glen International race. The second AVP on NBC tournament will
be telecast live on Sunday, August 25, from 2-4 p.m. (ET) from the Chicago Open
(August 22-25) at North Avenue Beach. Armato recently led a group that acquired
the AVP and quickly initiated discussions with NBC to renew its association
with AVP Beach Volleyball.
"I am excited to be back in the sport of beach volleyball," said AVP
Commissioner Leonard Armato. "We have an enormous opportunity with our NBC
Sports partnership to return the AVP to national prominence and eclipse its
previous successes. Beach volleyball has been widely regarded as the hottest
sport at the past two Olympics and this partnership with 'America's Olympic
Network' is the first of many steps we will be taking in the coming months that
will help us and our partners go to the next level."
This season all seven AVP tournament stops will feature men's and women's
competition. With more than $1 million available in prize money and four hours
of live programming on NBC, the AVP has developed a strategy along with key
partnership alignments that will soundly support the nation's best volleyball
tour.
"NBC is thrilled to see Leonard Armato at the helm of the AVP and proud to
welcome the AVP back to our summer programming lineup," said Jon Miller, Senior
Vice President, NBC Sports. "Back in 1990 when the AVP first appeared on NBC,
it provided a wonderful introduction to this exciting game and its charismatic
stars. Most important, it helped launch a dynamic, new Olympic sport starting
with the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and continuing in Sydney and beyond. We're
convinced this game will get even more popular moving forward."
About the AVP
The AVP was originally founded by current Commissioner, Leonard Armato in 1983.
Last season, after over 10 years of not being involved with the tour, Armato
and his business partner Bruce Binkow regained control and implemented a new
management team to redirect the AVP's vision and develop a brand building
strategy for one of the nation's most exciting sports.
The AVP is the nation's premier volleyball tour featuring more than 150 men's
and women's players from around the world. The AVP follows all the rules and
formats that are consistent to the international beach volleyball sanctioning
body (FIVB), which now resolves all conflicts of the Olympic selection process
in the coming years.
The AVP made its network television debut in 1990 with taped coverage of the
U.S. Open from Hermosa Beach. In 1991, NBC extended its pro beach volleyball
telecasts with live coverage of four AVP events.
