Thanks.

Well, (showing my age)

Rita Crockett - 1983 - 5'8", 38" standing vertical jump. (She went from a 24" to 38"
in one year)

Wow. Some say Mireya Luis has/does go higher, but I don't know.

Mighty impressive training regimen. Think of all those years she wasted
as a defensive specialist :-)

I always wondered if Rita ever had difficulty coordinating her spike
over the course of that year. She must have had to completely re-learn
the timing of her spike jump every two weeks or so.

Luis can touch 10'9. She's 5'9 1/2" or so, so I estimate that she can
touch 7'5 standing (I'm 6'0 and touch 7'8), which puts her vertical at
39"-40". But she's definitely more than a few standard deviations above
the mean, even for international vb.

Kemner jumped a mere 26" at one point early in her National Team career.
(One of the Barcelona features was a technical piece on specialized jump
analysis and training for USA National Team members. They compared
Timmons (34" @ 33 years old) to David Robinson (31" off one foot), and
did a before-and-after with Kemner.) She gained about 3" in two weeks
as a result of the analysis, and is probably now up to 32-33".

Rumor has it that Antoinette White has a 36" jump, but I haven't
seen any official stats. She's not very tall... 5'7" or 5'8" at
most. I've never played with anyone who's even had a 24" jump.

A lot of people I know think the women's net should be less than 8"
shorter than men's. They think it's "wimpy" that women play on
such a short net. It makes sense to me, though. At least
five year's ago, anyway, the average height for women was 5'4"
and the average height for men was 5'10" (in the US). Add
another two inches at least for the 5'4" person having shorter
arms, and you've got the 8" difference. It doesn't look like
any account was given to differences in jumping ability between
men and women. Does anyone know the history of the net heights?

I think I remember hearing that her vertical was either 40, 41, or 42"
when she played in an exhibition match I saw.

More fuel for the fire:

Monique Adams, who played collegiately for LSU, supposedly was able to
touch 11 feet, which is the highest I have heard reliably (in print)
reported for any woman.
