1. IRONMAN ASIA: Thanks to Nick Munting (mailto:ni...@auto-focus.com) for
sending the results.
Japan's Yoshinori Tamura, second in Ironman Asia a year ago by less than
three minutes, this time was a winner by seven minutes in Sunday's
Ironman Asia. Australia's Belinda Granger, who had been the surprise
runner-up at Ironman Australia in April, was the surprise winner among
women here.
Tamura managed a 2:50:45 marathon that was 20 minutes faster than Bryan
Rhodes, the New Zealander who was leading from the start. But a 3:10:27
marathon for Rhodes, to Tamura's 2:50, put the race in Tamura's control.
He won in 8:41:19 to Rhodes' 8:48:02.
Granger's 3:30:12 was only the third-fastest marathon, but it was enough
for her to beat anotehr Aussie, Raeleigh Tennant, by five minutes.
Granger's winning time was 9:37:20.
It was, notes Munting, the first time ever that Aussie women have
finished 1-2 in an Ironman triathlon.

consecutive Dannon Duathlon victories at Sunday's race in Alpharetta,
Georgia. Kuhl trailed Watson, who had just returned to the US from
Powerman Austria, going into the final run, but still managed a

4. GERMAN TRIATHLON CHAMPS: From Triathlon magazine chief editor
Frank Wechsel (mailto:wec...@spomedis.de):
Lothar Leder (DSW Darmstadt) and Christiane Pilz (SG FIKO Rostock) are
the German Olympic-distance champions for 2001, but the winners of
Sunday's race in Frankfurt are Matthew Reed from New Zealand and Wieke
Hoogzard from the Netherlands.
In the women's race, three set the pace on the bike leg after a strong
swim: Hoogzard, Pilz and Joelle Franzmann. They worked good together in
this race while the first big pack didn't manage to close the gap. In
the run Hoogzard took the early lead, then won in 1:55:30. After the
first of the four laps, Pilz upped the pace and, by finishing second,
secured her first-ever championship title.
A big pack with almost all top athletes of the men's race formed during
the first loop of the bike leg. Five of them took the lead in the run:
Switzerland's Reto Hug; New Zealand's Matthew Reed; last year's winner,
Lothar Leder; Sydney silver medallist Stephan Vuckovic and Andreas
Raelert (12th in Sydney). After 7km, Hug lost the contact to the
leaders. Five minutes later, Vuckovic couldn't go the high speed any
more, either. So it came to a strong sprint finish between the three
leaders with Reed winning in 1:43:33. Leder was second, taking his third
German Championship title after 1998 and 2000.

5. VALLADOLID SPRINT: From Andorra's Andreu Raya Demidoff
(mailto:ar...@andorra.ad), who writes: "This article was done with the
cooperation of Jaime Menendez de Luarca":
Valladolid Sprint Triathlon, classifying race for Spanish Championships.
At the Valladolid Sprint Triathlon on Sunday, a classifying race for the
Spanish Championships, there were ycling and running crashes because of
rain for elite women and men. In a cloudy and an unusual temperature
(20ºC) for Spain, it was closer to winter cold than summer-sunshine weather.
Elite women race began with four at the leading pack. Zuriñe Rodriguez
left the water in front followed by Maria Borrego, Beatriu Conca and
Silbia Muñoz. After the transition, Rodriguez and Muñoz cycled together,
followed by the two, who were never able to catch them. Muñoz was first
into transition and then ran to the finish on her own. Interestingly,
the first five women were juniors, and the first senior women was sixth.
Elite men started under the rain and a seven left the water together.
But there were some crashes on the bike, splitting the group, and Carlos
Gil, Clemente Alonso and Jordi Gimenez where the surviving trio in the
lead at the end of the bike. Gil ran faster than Alonso, and Gimenez
actually fell on the run. He lost his shoe, but finished with it in his
hand -- he was a great competitor.
>From the leading pack after the water, Omar Tayara was forced to leave
the race after he crashed on the bike. Ivan Tejero moved down to 11th
position after he, too, had trouble on the bike. But the eighth finisher
was a surprise -- Alejandro Santamaria, a long distance runner, who crashed
twice during the bike and twice recovered to finish.
