Greetings,
I discovered the sport about two years ago and can't get enough. Went
to Kona this year for Ironman, and now I am hooked. My only problem is
I can't find running shoes that last or fit, as I have a really unusual
foot size. (13aa). Does anyone know of any shoe companies (besides New
Balance) that makes running shoes in "odd" sizes. I am desparate, and
as you all know, when it comes to foot comfort, cost isn't a factor
(within reason of course.) If anyone has any information on narrow
running shoes, please respond by e-mail. Thanks, Dave.

Hey D,
We don't sell running shoes but I know a little bit about them. Other than
New Balance there are not many (if any) companies that sell shoes in
widths. However there are several companies that have a reputation for
narrow shoes. Nike has a reputation for running a bit narrow. Try Reebok
and Diadaora, they both have a reputation for running narrow. Saucony's
have a very roomy toe box but have a narrow heel and forefoot. Try to go
to a real proshop for running and they should be able to help you find a
narrow fitting shoe.

I have a similar problem in that I take size US13 feet although I think my
feet are narrow enough for about an average size 8 or 9.
I tend to buy shoes that I can tighten the laces really tight.
I used to wear New Balance 850 (1991-2 vintage) in a width A or B. In fact
I had 13 pairs of these before could buy no more.
At moment I wear Adidas Response TR trail shoes - these come up pretty
narrow - even I do not wear them with the tongues touching and that is
saying something.
I also have Nike Air Max (1995/6 version). I find with the lacing system
can get these pretty tight. I also have Nike Air Zoom Alphas for fast pace
runs. These aren't quite so good but I can get them tight enough.
For track spikes use Nike Zoom (1996 model). For racing flats Nike Air
Mariah, Adidas Catalyst (although these gave me blisters initially) and
Asics Gel Racers (ones needs several for duathlons in case you were
wondering). None of the flats are ideal but have managed to tighten the
laces enough.

For cycle shoes use Carnac Greg Lemonds (now Legends). These aren't very
narrow but are comortable and I have managed to pull the velcro straps over
enough.

I find, in general, that shoes tend to mould to your feet after a while.
After the 1st run in a new pair, I always come in and tighten up the laces
a lot. Another thing I do is the cut the ends off (with narrow feet you get
a lot of excess) and seal by putting the ends to a flame.

Over the years I have worn Nike, New Balance, Adidas, Reebok, Brooks and
Asics so I'm hardly loyal! I would advise finding a decent store who will
let you try on as many shoes as possible and select the one that is best
for you. That's what I do... Sometimes I have had to settle for the least
worst shoe rather than the ideal one because the ideal one is not on the
market. That's the drawback of being 6'4.5'' with feet to match.

New Balance were the obvious ones of choice but clearly after deciding that
most people have average or 'wide' feet it no longer makes commercial sense
to market A and B widths in US13 (at least in the UK).

Hope this helps.

Tim, how many shoes do you buy a year, and how many do you have lying
around your house? I need to persuade my partner that a dozen old pairs of
running shoes accruing at a rate of 2-3 pairs per year is quite normal.

Some people have remarked that I seem to have more (sports) shoes than
Imelda Marcos!
Personally I think that 'a dozen pairs accruing at a rate of 2-3 pairs per
year is quite normal'.
I do however put the ones I didn't use all the time in a trunk so they are
out of the way and every now and then a purge is done of ones that are no
longer needed.

Homeless shelters and other organizations that attempt to clothe and feed
the less fortunate love to get running shoes. It's amazing how quickly
they can biuld up in your closet! There are people who could really use
them, so every once in a while, go through your closet and give your old
shoes to a good cause!

Hi Dave,

Nike has a running shoe in narrow, it is the A. Pegasus. I will be more
then happy to help you with this or a New Balance shoe. You may either
e-mail me or call me at 800-224-1860.

For race day and fast training, you might try the new NIKE Air Talaria's.
Light, but not too stripped down.
