I see there is a duathlon on in San Francisco Sunday, the Sri Chinmoy Splash
and Dash. In the instructions it says "wetsuits are advised".

Whats the water temperature likely to be ? Lower than 20c/68f ??

I'm used to swimming in cool open water, does it ever warm up in the UK ;-)
and didn't bring my wetsuit as I didn't expect to be here long, or to be
racing...

++Mark.

In a word, yes. Probably more like low 60s. Go to...

The SF bay never gets to 68F. Right now it's probably 58-59F as it's
been cold and foggy here lately.

Thanks... I rushed down there this morning from Santa Cruz... :-o stood
around for about an hour trying to convince myself to go in after I realised
I'd forgot my swim goggles... went for a 12-mile run out to the bridge, you
can't go under or over on foot, loads of police/security, ran down the other
side to Baker Beach and the steps from Escape from Alcatraz... does anyone
run up them ? and then ran back.

When I got back I went in for a quick dip in my tri-shorts, no wetsuit, no
headwarmer... you were right, it was freezing... I'd rather swim the English
channel...

Still, I know what to expect now, I'll be back June 16th for the Alcatraz
race assuming I can get in... ++Mark.

Cathy - does it change that quickly from week to week? Some days it
feels like the advertized 62, other days damn damn cold. Doesn't seem
like it should change too quickly though. It's close to the bay and it
gets some circulation.

How far was the swim for the splash and dash? I can do 4 lengths buoy to
bouy (I'm pretty sure now it's shorter than the advertized quarter mile)
without a suit. But when that temp starts dropping back into the 50s,
I'm sticking to my wetsuit.

As far as I could tell they didn't run the Splash and Dash. At least there
was nothing going on that I could see from 7.15 when I first arrived until
about 10.45 when I left. Certainly no run event. There was though some kind
of swim training session being taught on the steps under the Museum...

The Swim club did have a swim race though. Around I'd guess 8.30 about
30-members came out, walked around the dock to Fort Mason(I think), up the
road oppsite and then swam back besides the old piers and around and back to
Aquatic Park. They had boats out accompanying the swimmers, most of whom
didn't have wetsuits, but did have neoprene hats with ear covers.

Without a wetsuit, hat or goggles I managed just two bouys(150m at most) and
then headed back to shore as quick as I could... ++Mark.

It can change from day to day. I've been there on a Thursday when it
was OK and then on Saturday you are frozen.

Not sure of the S&D distance. I call a round-trip of the bouys 600
yds. If you swim over to the big black ship and back (after doing a
B2B RT, that is half a mile.)

clm in sf who will be glad to swim in HI in a couple of weeks

Hi,

See the links below for water temperature in the bay. SFPORTS has
almost real-time water temperature and other info available. It is a
pretty impressive site. The tempurature at Aquatic Park changes
considerably due to the tide, time of day, and amount of sun. The
water actually reached 60F for the Alcatraz race this year, and that
is about as warm as it gets. The Golden Gate station reports 55F right
now.

Reporting unavailable right now. Oh well, given its proximity to the
bridge I'd expect it to report a bit colder anyway.

Looks like the only thing to do is to bring a thermometer with me. (As
it is, I'm going to drag a gps receiver out so I can measure the buoy to
buoy distance correctly.)
