Cam, they have it at Chapters online.

I have had a hard time finding books on running and tris locally. I
managed to find Triathlon 101 at Chapters downtown- they seem to have
a better selection of sports books than the Kanata store.

Maybe the Running Room would carry it, or possibly Bushtakah?

Is there a swimming store in town- not like Bikini Village but
something for swimmers?? There was one in Calgary that was great.. All
we have is Sports Experts!

Jenn, thanks for all of the suggestions. Chapters in South Keys has/had
Tri 101... that's where I got it. They have a few other tri books. I'll
pop into the RR soon and see... they DO carry a few swimming things,
like goggles. Guess I have some checking around to do. As a last resort,
I'll order from Chapters online.

Thanks,

Cam-

How is the training coming? I noticed on trirudy that they have some
clinics coming up.. It would be good to go to a clinic, but I am sure
I would feel like a total beginner next to all of the serious
athletes!

Jenn,

i have a cold at the moment, and i'm taking today off from everything.
one day 'ought to do it, right? :) but the running is good - i'm up to
an hour long run, 40 min. for the other days, including hills and
speedwork. i'm going to do the St. Pat's Day 5K race.

swimming is on hold for a little bit, as i've definitely got swimmer's
shoulder. that could be from any number of things... poor technique
(quite possible), hard workouts (not as possible), or repetitive
movements that i'm just not used to (like front or back crawl). on the
plus side, this past Monday I took my first stab at the real front crawl
without a flotation device. i somehow managed to do it decently. i just
have to work out the finer points so that form is better and smoother.

at this point it's really hard to say how ready i'll be for a tri in
May. i'll wait as late as i can before the entry fee goes up, and then
decide what i'm going to do. i hate it when things are this iffy - at
least i can honestly say i'll be ready for the half marathon in May.

I noticed those clinics at trirudy.com too. i *might* consider the part-
day one where they videotape you, and help you with your technique.
could be a bit like the Total Immersion stuff. i believe it mentions
that they welcome people of all swimming abilities.

Total Immersion has two clinics coming up that you may be interested in.

1) Toronto (well really Aurora) March 16 & 17

2) Montreal - April 6&7

To register just go to www.totalimmersion.net This is the best way to get
the full Total Immersion experience.

I ordered my version from Chapters on-line. There was a bit of a mix up on
Chapters' part but I finally did got it. I don't have a Chapters in town so
on-line was my best hope. Since you have access to the brick and morter,
Chapters would likely be able to get it for you if you ask. If they have it
at the warehouse, I don't think there is any extra charge to you.

As far as the Running Room having it, I can't recall ever seeing Total
Immersion there but again they might be able to order it in.

I can't think of any places in Ottawa that would have it off hand. There are
a couple of places in the Toronto area that might have it in stock.

Anyway, I'd check with Chapters and if all else fails order it from the
total immersion website.

skipped that.

Hi Cam,

about that shoulder thing....I have a friend who used to race competitively
and used to struggle with shoulder problems. Her physio gave her some
strengthening exercises to correct a muscle imbalance, and since then she's
been much better. I don't know much more about it but it may be worth your
while to investigate.

I used to do weights in high school and I really screwed up my shoulders,
but I've been doing yoga for about a year and the problem seems to have gone
away!!

for what it's worth

Cam-

This is something I have noticed too! It was just one at first, but
now it is both shoulders. Massage didn't help at all, so I think I
will need to do some more stretching!

Jenn, check out the replies to my "rotator cuff tendonitis" posts....
especially the latest one. the rotation of the hand/forearm so that the
thumb travels downward or inward will stress the shoulders. avoid or
minimize this rotation. in my last workout, i tried some of the
suggestions, and they really worked! i had no pain afterward. if you
have trouble locating the info, i could pass it on to you. i've been
saving most of it.

also, i have a 2-sided page full of great stretches i got from a sports
dr. at Carleton.... the best stretch for this shoulder thing:

stand in front of your refrigerator,
hook your fingers over the top edge with hands shoulder width apart,
bend at the knees a bit with feet shoulder width apart, keeping the
pelvis directly above your feet
then let your upper body hang forward loosely.
you'll really feel the pull in the shoulders and neck and even the arm
sockets. it may even hurt - mine did. anyway, hold that for 10-15
seconds, then "move the stretch around" by varying the bend in your
knees (up or down) and holding each stretch.

then when you stand up, you'll feel an amazing difference. do this
whenever you begin to feel the soreness. most neck stretches will help,
too, esp. the ear to shoulder one. gently. i've given you the stuff that
has made the biggest difference for me. best of luck!

i'd be dead without the newsgroups :)
