The breakthrough is : Breath normally! Never meant much to me either
till this lunchtime, when I suddenly realised that by furiously
exhaling underwater to completely empty my lungs, then needing to take
huge gulps of air when breathing in, I was just encouraging myself to
hyperventilate.
So, relaxing and only breathing as deeply as required seem to be key.
I'm still slow and ungraceful obviously - but I'm really starting to
enjoy it and feel as though I'm really getting somewhere!
Just wanted to share that with all the other newbie swimmers out
there!
cheers

Rob, thanks for that message. I'm not quite a total beginner at
swimming, but i am at front crawl with the face in the water. i'm
working hard at getting the breathing down, and it's coming along, but i
still tend to do what you mention - "furiously exhaling underwater to
completely empty my lungs", then having to take big gulps of air when
breathing in. that sure wears you out quickly.
during other strokes, like on the back or side, i am very relaxed and
have found a bit of a breathing rhythm. i guess i need to just hang in
there and eventually i'll feel more at home with the front crawl and the
breathing part will come. i've been practising with the face in the sink
whenever i'm not at a pool; it's helping but i need to get the timing
right with the arm movements. in theory it sounds easy, but when you try
it for the first time, it can become bungling again.
thanks,
Cam
Cam, I are you doing a tri soon? I am doing my first one in May- the
Early bird one at Carleton U. I got a bike at the T&L sale and
swimming starts on Wednesday.
As if running wasn't enough! I am not ready to start training for a
full marathon, and the tri training will give me some variety. I plan
on doing the Esprit in Montreal (olympic dist) in Sept..
Jenn :)
Hi, I'm doing the Early Bird one at Carleton U as well. I did a sprint tri
last Labour Day (also put on by Somerault) and had a great time.
Jenn, are you swimming with a Master's team or some other organized swim?

Ha, yes I've noticed your name here too, Jenn.

I'm aiming for that very same race event... the "Try A Tri", for my
first time out. Hey, you looking for a training partner? Then again, I'd
probably be holding you back.... running is really the only sport I feel
totally comfortable racing... cycling the tri will be interesting but
probably not a problem (just starting cycling a bit last summer after
many years of not even owning a bike! then again, i've got a stationary
bike that i use often), and well, you read where i am at with swimming.
i figure if i can complete the swim, i'll feel immense satisfaction, and
that confidence will get me through the rest of the race. <fingers
crossed>

very cool! yeah, the marathon is a long haul... you really have to be
ready for it mentally - even before you're physically ready, or there's
no point. after my one marathon late last year, i have decided to stick
with races shorter than that. and i think i was burning out a bit from
just running all the time... tri training and racing will be a welcome
change.. mix things up a bit. best of luck!

well, well... it seems there are at least a few of us tri newbies in
Ottawa. we should try to meet (if even just to say hi) at the race.
best of luck in training, all!

I am swimming at Pinecrest Pool with the Masters Club- tonight will be
the first night! They have a drop in program, which is nice, yoiu just
swim when you want and pay as you go. The classes are on Monday at
7:30 and Wednesday at 6:30 and Saturday at 4:00. Some coworkers of
mine attend and have also just started triathloning.
I am running with a group (Cam- I believe you have met them via
internet- John Deknatel) and we are all at about the 1/2 marathon
distance or getting there. I would like to start riding with a group-
perhaps the Ottawa Bike Club or one of the clubs at a bike shop
(Peccos has one) to get some tips on how to ride. I have had a
mountain bike for a long time, but never a road bike- ikes skinny
tires! I just bought a trainer as well to get me through until the
roads clear.
The running room has a virtual training program, but there is also a
program in the Triathlete magazine this month (and for the next 2) to
complete an Olympic. I plan on follwing that, but a partner in
training would also be good motivation!
What are yoour plans?

I used the Triathletes Training Bible to create my training plan. There's a
website too, and I think there's an online training schedule you can fill.
Go to http://www.trainingbible.com and there's a link from there. The book
shows you how to plan a year of training...it's worth the $25, or whatever
it was.
Let me know about your swim, k?

I got myself a short-term swim membership at the Nepean Sportsplex. I
suppose if I did more searching I might have discovered a cheaper or
better place to go, but I really wanted convenience - not far from home,
and I was familiar with the place and the people.
that's a sweet deal that you swim for free, Scott. make the most of that.
at the moment i am sort of winging it in my training. i'm ramping up in
my running... getting it up to 4 days a week and will introduce a longer
run soon. then i've got my swim lesson on Mondays, and i hit the pool at
least twice more during the week. i have a stationary bike but haven't
touched it yet. soon i'll get into that, and when the roads clear, i'll
get out for more cycling.
i've read one tri book, am partway through another (Triathlon 101), and
have another on deck (Triathloning for Ordinary Mortals). Since I'm
aiming for the Try-A-Tri, and my goal is just to finish, i don't think i
need to go overboard on the training. i'll be using the tri workouts as
cross-training to complement my half marathon (Ottawa in May) training.
i just need to assemble a schedule that i can live with.
I will check out that website you mentioned though. Thanks for the info!
Cam
It was pretty challenging- I haven't been in the pool for about a
year. But it was good..
Here is what we did (approx..)
Warmup
100 free
100 back
200 IM Kick (fly, back, breast, free)
100 easy
Main
all freestyle
300 then 3x100 then 6 X 50
100 easy
200 then 2x100 then 4x50
100 easy
SAUNA!!
The coach is nice but the pool is quite small- 100 yards and narrow,
but I am comparing it to Carleton U which is huge. I am a but tired
today..
:)

Jenn, just curious - do you know anything about membership or single use
rates at Carleton? Thanks...
Cam
I got the Total Immersion book from my girlfriend for valentines day
(shes also learning front crawl atm) - so I'm looking forward to some
more breakthroughs :-)
Also I went to see a physio last night with what I thought was a
persistant hamstring injury - is in fact a calf strain - but the
upshot is that I'm not allowed to run etc for at least a couple of
weeks (gentle cycling is ok). So that gives me lots more time to
practise down the pool!
have fun
Rob
A gym membership is about $300. Then you have to pay an extra $70 per
masters session. Single swim sessions are $4.00 (more $$ than at
Pinecrest which is $2.40)
Jenn (bank of usefull information) :)

Hi Jenn,
Does gym membership include use of the pool? Carleton rates are more
than those at the Sportsplex too. Thanks for the info.

lucky you! i'll be interested in hearing about your progress with TI.
I've read a bit about it and have checked a few things out at the
website. Great site, in case you haven't seen it.

shame about the running, but it's good that you look at this as an
opportunity to work on swimming. it was a running injury that got ME
back into the pool!
best of luck training,
Cam
A trainer buddy would probably benefit all! I have certainly benefited
from John Dekanatel's group! Seems as though there are 3 of us in this
NG plus 3 guys from work that are into tris (and we are all about the
same level) so we shoudl try to get together in the spring for some
rides. I pratically know you since you used to work at Nortel :)

Jenn,
When it's outdoor cycling weather, I could try to make it out with your
group, as long as you don't leave me in your dust :) I'll be the one
on a mountain bike.... need to replace the knobby tires with slicks to
at least help a bit.

out for some training rides!
Scott- are you looking for a running group too?

Jenn and Scott,
did you both say you were doing the Try-A-Tri? i plan on doing minimal
cycling training for this, maybe just a couple of times per week, no
really long rides. i just want to become comfortable riding in my
swim/running gear, with the goal of simply finishing the race.
my anal retentive running training and goals aren't creeping into my tri
training - yet. but i'm not backing out of the group ride thing.... i'll
tag along if you'll have me. where do you train, Jenn?
catcha later,
Cam
I am getting anal about this training- as you can see.. I have no idea
where I will train for the bike, I would like somewhere flat, so I
think I will probably just do the closed roads on the Sunday Bike days
- I think that starts in May. Gatineau park is nice too- but there are
alot of hills. The Pink Lake road is up and flat the whole way- and
down on the return!
> I am doing the Sprint in May and hopefully the Olympic one in

which race are you aiming for in September? is there a Try event in that?

i guess i'll have to think about getting a bike rack for my car now, if
i'm to travel to other parts of the city to ride. when i have cycled
previously, i'd just take the roads up to Mooney's Bay and get on the
cross-city paths there. then i can roam as far as i want.
Cam
(absolutely wiped today after a speed workout and a tough swim class
yesterday, and a difficult (!) "easy" run this morn)
there is one in Montreal in Sept- I think it is called the Esprit
Triathlon or the Tiathlon de Montreal. It sounds good for many
reasons.
1- it is in Montreal- I don't get there enough
2- the swim is in the olympic basin- there are actually lanes (kinda
cheating if people like open water, but I am fine with this) It is a
rowing place.
3- the bike is around the Grand Prix track- no hills. :) And the run
is there too.
They have a web site, I found it using goggle search, but don't have
it offhand.
I have to get a bike rack too. We have a Thule basic rack and I think
the bike attachment would be good. My other preference was a trailer
hitch rack, but we don't have a trailer hitch and they clamp on the
frame and it may get (god forbid) scratched- not really that worried
but the roof things are supposed ot be pretty good. I hope to be able
to ride close to home, but I don't really want to be riding on the
highways near Kanata- I like the car free Sunday bike days.
Jenn
We really should have our own list- you, Scott and I.. :) I did sign
up at trirudy.com though..
Cam in Ottawa <cam_w...@sympatico.ca> wrote in message news:<cam_wilson-E8A94...@news.bellglobal.com>...
that Montreal tri sounds neat.... i'll try to find the URL.... and see
if there is a Try-a-Tri there. just in case i get kinda hooked after the
May race. BTW, i signed up at trirudy.com as well.
