Don't forget coed masters relay results! Joan and I (the Iron Couple)
won in about 15 1/2 hours. More important, we got special mention at
the award ceremony as "certified nut cases" for the way we did it. I
did the swim and run and Joan did the bike. While she was biking I
competed in the Floridian Sizzler (swim 1, bike 30, run 7 miles). The
long course started at 7:30 AM (7:45 for relays) and the short course at
10:00. I had 30 minutes after the long swim to repair the home made
splint on my pinky (for a knuckle I broke the day before), replacing the
tape that fell apart in the water.

The short course did not go well for me, almost 4 hours. Temps were in
the high 80's, humid and sunny. The bike was hilly, including one climb
where over half the riders I saw walked their bikes (it is the first 30
miles of the long course). I had stomach trouble and walked about half
of the 7 mile run, not a good sign for the marathon coming up in 4
hours. I thought I could recover by then, but I guess not. I walked
about half of that too, taking 5 hours. I just couldn't get enough food
or fluids down.

Joan was very worried about the bike but did just fine. I probably went
into the 3.4 mile swim, 30 mile bike, and 33 mile run with too much
confidence and not enough training. I have been averaging about 400
yards/week swimming, about 2 workouts a month. Surprisingly I didn't
have any trouble there (except for being slow), even though I had never
swum over 3 miles in my life. I didn't expect such a hard time running,
though. Two months ago I ran the Pikes Peak ascent and marathon and the
Leadville 100 all within an 8 day period, then last month I ran a trail
50K in 4:35, under hotter conditions.
