"Maybe it's just very different to what you're used to seeing from me. But
that's something that I'm trying to work on, to not let my emotions sort of
control how I'm playing.
"I just tried to stay calm, tried to find a way to win and it didn't happen.
But I didn't feel flat on the court at all."
....good lad. About time too.
I'm inland. Way inland. The closest mens professional tennis comes to me
is, what? Cincinnati? Who want to go there even if it means the only
time in your life you'll be able to see _________________, in person.
There's not as much tennis on TV as there used to be and even though I
just signed up for this uVerse or iVerse or whatever it is, I don't get
the Tennis Channel. So, all the top-flight tennis I see is when
something really big happens or YouTube and what I see there when I see
Andy Murray play is...nothing special, really.
What is it with this guy? What is there to see or expect to see?
I see Nadal play and it's clear he's extraordinary. Federer, more than
extraordinary. Roddick...eh. He used to have a big serve that was
extraordinary but that's gone and he's where somebody that big and
strong but who still needs two hands on the backhand ought to be.
Anyway, the point is and what I'm asking is why do some of you guys keep
mentioning this Murray so much? Talking about how he needs to do this
and not need to do that. What he needs to do is to keep doing what he's
doing and accept the fact that while he's elite in the sport and he'll
make more than a decent living, he'll never be extraordinary.
Ever.
He's missing something and I don't think he can go out and buy it or
learn it or discover it or do anything more than sit in the stands when
the extraordinary play and envy it.
Sorry. He seems like an okay kid. Not out spray painting on public
buildings or drinking to excess. Just a typical kid but that's it.
LNC
True. I never gave him much consideration but people on rst seem to
give him too much credit and so I began to give him a bit of a doubt
and then he goes out and plays Federer and looks like a Tier II
player! I won't make that mistake again.
Murray is severely over-hyped by the press - especially the British
press.
He will never win a slam, mark my words.

It's a big prediction to make. Any player can win a slam (even Nadal
did :-)).
And Murray has won many big titles, so for sure he can win a slam but
he is not the big talent people are talking about. I even remember I
said here that Del Potro is more talented than Murray and it was like
the end of the world here. I said that before Del Potro won his slam.
Murray entire game is only one department of Nadal's game, and if he
doesn't win a slam soon, his backboard abilities will diminish.
True. He isn't over-hyped in the American press. Andy Roddick is over-
hyped here. If you ask a pedestrian of tennis who Roddick, Federer,
and Nadal are they usually know who Roddick is but never heard of
Federer and Nadal.
Never is a long time Stanley.
why should he act like a boring dull person, when he clearly isn't?
His roaring on-court that he did at the Gasquet match a couple of
years ago was the best thing pretty much since Connors.
Pretty good post. BUT let me say Murray's talent is in the manner in
which he plays or rather his tactics + his gets + his bh can be
phenominal. He has a tier 1 first serve too. Without mentioning h2h or
beating Nadal in a slam, do you guys honestly reckon Del Potro
would've won US Open 2009 against Murray in the final? do you really
reckon there would be no chance for Murray to have won that if the
draw had been different?
Why are you so defensive about Murray? I don't think he is disliked
but honestly people see his talent for what it is.
I have to disagree here. Roddick was over-hyped in America in 2003,
following his US Open win, but not since. He's never been popular
especially and if anyone knows him in the US now, it's as Mr. Brooklyn
Decker. He's a total non-entity these days.
However, everyone knows Fed. Look at all the American commercials he
appears on. Fed speaks perfect English (better than Roddick, who is
as articulate as a ham). If Nadal wants to cash in on the American
market, he has to speak fluent English and limit his thick accent. I
am incredulous he hasn't done this yet. Vilas never spoke good English
and that limited him in the American market severely.

He is occasionally very impressive but more often he's doing nothing
special
out there. The fact that he's managed some wins over the best players
sometimes
overshadows the fact that he usually underperforms....even when he
wins.
Occasionally he shows that he can be a brilliant tactician and when he
plays aggressively
he can hit with the best of them. He has a great strategy of changing
up the speed of the groundstrokes
at the right time for a winner. When he's not doing this he looks
like he's playing bunkball.
Usually he comes across like a Scottish mope who would rather react
than act and that will
not get him where he and his many fans would like him to be.
Well said... you were an early Delpo-ite... SEEMINGLY Murray doesn't
have the SERVE to win a major! He simply cannot win enough games to
create those 'routine holds' and 'close holds' which you add together
to get a ratio of 'protected serving games' that guys who tend to win
slams DO PRODUCE routinely...
HAVING STATED THAT... he's been in 2 hardcourt major finals... so he
certainly COULD win one... it must be admitted he's come VERY close...
IF getting to a final is deemed close... I'd say it is...
P
His serve is too inconsistant to be Tier 1, wouldn't you say? I think
Murray will win a major before he's done... when he wins those
Master1000s he looks strong enough to win a major...
P
Yes... and by the time of a final, at a major, someone like Fed or
Nadal is normally humming offensively and covering well on the
recieving side... and Murray's offspeeding, junkballing, down-the-line
backhand and mixed bag serving doesn't stand up to full bore all court
counter attacking tennis hit by guys going for the kill!
P
this is what I mean, half the people here seem to think it's
impossible for him to win a slam cos he'll have to beat Fed,Nadal,Del
P on fire, Tsonga on fire, Djoker in Miami form or something, totally
ignoring that he's got to two finals already.
He can do it... I don't think there's any question... he's made finals
so he's got the game to be right there... and young enough to make the
final adjustments... he may not be 'exceptional' as some define it
around here... but there's no doubt he's got a lot of tools at his
disposal... I could see him beating Djokovic, for example in a
final... or Federer actually, on his day... not sure about Nadal...
P
What had his nationality got to do with it?
He does however have a great returning game, which gets him into more of his
opponents points than most. His serve is also getting much better. It's just
his head that needs sorting...which is the hardest transition to make. He
needs the right coach, that's for sure.
He needs Annacone :)))))))))))))))
P
There is no reason Murray can't improve his service game a notch or two
which will get him to the threshold of a slam win. The head question is
harder but if Federer could do it ... why not Murray? Too bad Federer
won't give Murray a referral to the guy who sorted Federer's head out. :)

Fed's mother 'seems' like a sane A-type... and Andy's 'seems' like a
hothead A-type... who knows though...
