Well, after already two and a half minutes of gooey filled schmaltz, the
unthinkable happens.

The apparent mother of the future protagonist (?) gently nips the future
protagonist in the nose with the index finger in a bedtime scene filmed
with a nylon stocking filter.

Can this thing regain credibility? Won't be easy, but I hope so.

A better question--why would someone post a review based on the first three minutes of a film?

For the heck of it.

The structure of time is circular thus he was both in the beginning and
end of the film at the same time. He had already seen and not seen it.

Yep, makes sense. :) Personally I think the film tipped its hand too soon at the beginning in relation to the book, which doled out the flashbacks/flashforwards more piecemeal.

i really enjoyed the movie, didn't read the book. it got slightly
predictable last 15 mins or so, but i'd have to give it pretty high
marks.

Arrival sucked big time. And Amy Adams might the least sensual actress of Hollywood...of all time.

It is one of those movies which tries to be clever...but it is so obvious that it tries to be clever that it is super annoying. On top of it Amy Adams is a shit actress with max 2-3 expressions and a blank stare.

What has happened to acting these days? None of the top actors and actresses these days can really act.

I miss the star studded line up acting days of Glengarry Glenross where they were like 7 actors on screen and everyone is a genius actor to the point that it all seemed like overacted a bit. I would like actors who could actually overact.

Is Amy Adams in it? I didn't recognise her ... the nylon socks in the
lenses ... geez. Some borders, directors.

But AA is kinda homey hot. Somewhat annoying and not that great looking,
but homey hot. A big nose can be sexy for some too.

If nobody pulls out a gun and starts shooting withing 10 minutes, Iceberg's attention drifts and he labels the movie a bore. And Raja sounds like one of the imDB kids with his "review."

Ha ha, agreed. The best is, the other day I was looking at one of the Reddit movie groups and I happened to see a comment from a poster who said that he hasn't watched Schindler's List because he couldn't stand "old" movies. Schindler's List is from 1993! That's what you deal with on the internet--mostly people from 12-27 who consider movies from 1993 old! How can you take most of their opinions or reviews seriously?

soccerfan777

Schindlers list is a great movie. Arrival simply isn't. I am not a big fan of the movies released this millennium. I haven't seen one movie from the last 17 years which simply blew my mind. Not one!

Was American Beauty from 2000? Gladiator was pretty good too. What else from 00s and 10s that boasted great performances and had some entertainment value too?

Gracchus

unread,
Oct 15, 2017, 12:09:29 PM10/15/17

Exactly. I was talking to a 25-year-old about movies a few years ago when he told me that as a rule, he didn't watch any movie more than 10 years old. This was an educated guy too, but it was hard to take him seriously after that. Now I can understand how time reference changes with age. That is to say, for someone 40+, 10 years seems much less than for someone in that 12-27 range. But I think this idea of film (or other art) being unworthy of attention because it's not current is a symptom of Millennial Disease. When I was 15 years old, I was already watching all kinds of "old" films, including silents. Sure, I thought some of them were hokey, but I certainly wasn't dismissing anything out of hand because of when they were made. In fact, I found the different eras fascinated. But today their brains are shaped by Facebook and Twitter, so they view the whole world that way, including history. Ah, these young whippersnappers! *<in crotchety old guy voice>*

No, it is NOT a good film. It's formulaic Hollywood pap following the same template as many films like it. If this is what you prefer to thinking fare, that says it all. And just FYI--the presence of subtitles doesn't make an art film. There are subtitles because without them, most of the world would only see a bunch of angry Japanese people yapping and not understand a word of it.

That movie was totally nonsensical and unbelievable... almost like a
comic book except it wasn't billed, produced or advertised that way. Tom
Cruise looked like a shrimpy wimp in it as usual but even more so in this
case and was completely miscast I thought. What was "serious" about it?

Yep. That's how it turned out to be. The first 10 seconds define a
movie. If it fails there, there's no turning back.

"Mommy and Daddy talk to Kang and Kodos and learn that life is Hannah
spelled forwards or backwards. If you think only one way of spelling is
correct, you're a bird in a cage".

Do you have to ask such stupid questions?

Castings are done by doing blowjob to Harvey and guys like him.
That's how they succeed and get roles.

So all A-list actresses are actually prostitutes. Most paid in the
world, the ones who had to do it only couple of times and got
rewarded in millions. ROI is remarkable in their case.

But it's therefore very annoying to read about all sorts of stuff
they had to go through, when in fact they wanted it, let it
happen, took their dozen of millions that followed and stole a
spot to some of the "more" talented actresses.
