I was absolutely disgusted to hear that Pat Rafter was booed off the
court when he was forced to retire. I would love for someone who was
there and who booed to come on here and explain exactly why Rafter
would deserve such abuse. Do you think he had an appointment with his
psychic and had to leave? I'm sure real tennis fans throughout the
world are appalled at the actions of these few ignorant morons.
Sure, if someone has just tanked the entire match then let them know
it's not acceptable, but for someone forced to withdraw due to injury
and to have to listen to that is not right. I wonder if those same
people would have booed Pete Sampras at his press conference or if he
had been in a similar situation to Rafter.

These fans who booed probably are not avid tennis fans. They probably
don't even know who Rafter is. They just came to watch an exciting match
of tennis. I have a feeling they probably didn't even realize that his
shoulder was bothering him that much. Maybe they thought that he was
tanking the match and gave up.

And yes, of course they would boo Sampras if he was in a similar
situation. Why would the press boo him at a press conference?

The same goes for Agassi and all the players. The players expect that
here. It is a tough crowd. I listen to a lot of interviews the players
do and they all seem to expect that, and actually get a kick out of it.

I saw this on TV. There were scattered boos. I would not say that he
was booed off the court. This is New York afterall, they even boo Santa
Claus. Besides, there is no restriction as to which nationality can buy
tickets. So why do you think those who booed are Americans?

I read and re-read the post and the subject heading, and nowhere did I see a
reference to the people who booed being Americans. Maybe everyone else just
expects the blame to be placed on Americans because they're such easy targets.
Not that I condone it.........

Thank you, YuhMinL - you took the words right out of my mouth. I wonder
why people are trying to defend the indefensible. I would be equally as
appalled if Agassi or Moya or whoever was subjected to the same
treatment. Regardless if they are tennis fans or not, I think the
players deserve a little more respect than that. I doubt that I could
have just walked off the court without giving the two fingered salute
to those ignorant pests. Someone would have to be clinically stupid to
think for a second that a professional would just walk off the court 2
sets all in a Grand Slam, especially when it's the twice defending
champion.

This reminds me of a situation with Henri Leconte. He was injured badly
during a match once and he was crying on the court. And what happened?
People started cheering, laughing and applauding him because they thought he
was faking it. Thats what you get from a clown reputation I guess.
Its a different situation, but your post just reminded
me of this situation.
