Let's see. She's been seeing men all her life. She just got
married. She took January off to spend on a delayed honeymoon.
Yes, obviously a lesbian.
Snort.

but didn't she get married to someone named "joan vehils"? also
isn't she the doubles partner of choice for martina navratilova,
a well-known, practicing lesbian?
that was why i was wondering; there have to be more lesbians than
amelie mauresmo on the wta tour.

Try "Juan Vehils."
And most doubles partnerships are *not* based on sexual preference!
Consider that Martina Hingis, who is very heterosexual, partnered
with Jana Novotna, who (last I heard) was still involved with Hana
Mandlikova. Similarly, Pam Shriver is heterosexual, and she won
21 Slams with Navratilova! And Natasha Zvereva was not a sexual
partner of Gigi Fernandez.
> that was why i was wondering;
No, you're wondering because you consider sexuality more important
than the game. Who *cares* what the players do in their off time?

And if they want you to know, they will tell you, and if they
don't want you to know, what right have you to ask?

You're thinking of Joan Miro. (There should probably be some accent marks
there, but I don't speak Spanish or Catalan, and so don't know where they
go.) But yes -- Joan Miro was a man. As was Evelyn Waugh. And Brett
Butler is both a man and a woman.

Which is why some on the NG think the young Martina should play doubles
with the elder Martina.
Having said that, why are we all responding to this troll anyhow?

Nitpick: I think it *is* Joan Vehils. They're both Catalan by ethnicity,
but Spanish by citizenship. Perhaps Marsha can clear this up for the both
of us.

Topic for a different post, but which I'm including here because my
newsreader requests 40% of any post be new material: Which players have had
their peak performance while being romantically involved with their coach?
I can think of Halard, van Roost, and Testud in addition to Novotna
>Similarly, Pam Shriver is heterosexual, and she won

Speaking of doubles partnerships clearly not being based on sexual
preference, I'd like to see a doubles partnership of Hingis and Mauresmo.
:-)
And as I said to Georgiana, why are any of us responding to this troll
that would be my question ...

First, just to chime in... I could give you a list and you could check it
twice, if you want to be naughty and not nice. But while it might be important
information to single guys who can't figure out why the phone calls go
unreturned, I for one don't really care if they are from Mars or Venus.
In regards to your guilty by association theory of playing doubles with a
lesbian partner means... well, I may just have to stop posting here as the
association with this newsgroup... I mean I was BORN in San Francisco, so what
would my wife begin to think?

let me tell you something about guys "ted"; a lot of guys dig
lesbians. that doesn't mean that we're 'trolls', that just means
that we're guys.

This I don't understand, since lesbians by definition, are attracted to
women only. If you said, bisexual, then maybe I understand where you are going
with this.
heh
or, as a writer to dear abby once asked about two women who roomed
together in the apartment next to hers, "abby, are these women
lebanese???"
but, seriously, people's preoccupation w/ the sexuality of those in the
mass media is an interesting phenomenon, socialogically speaking ... but,
in terms of tennis, it's BORING ... get over it ... it's just sex ... who
cares who they are doing or how or where or when or how often or anything
else? ... the sniggling junior-high level commentary on this topic never
ceases to amaze ... if ignorance is bliss, these people must be ecstatic
...
so go post about it on
alt.I.have.no.sex.life.so.I.am.compelled.to.speculate.about.tennis.players'.sex.lives
...
I'm not Marsha, but I can tell you that the actual name of ASV's husband is
Joan Vehils. Joan is the Catalan form of John, as Juan is the Spanish one.
Opinions expressed herein are my own and may not represent those of my employer.

It is PLAIN TO SEE that you are PUSHING A SEXUAL AGENDA. Period.
Whatever the sexual orientation is of the tennis player's it is THEIR
BUSINESS. Why don't you take this to the alt.lesbian newsgroup. I am sure
you WOULD be WELCOMED with OPEN ARMS.

Same name, though, even if spelled differently. I don't know the spelling
with certainty, but I'm trying to demonstrate the origin of the name.

This is going to be a tough one, because -- to my knowledge -- there
isn't a single acknowledged *male* homosexual player. So we'll never
know about them. For that matter, neither Novotna nor Martinez ever
"came out," though they didn't really hide the matter.
I seem to recall, though, that de los Rios's coach is her husband.
So that's probably another. It looked to me like Maja Palaversic's
husband was warming her up at Bloomington, but I'm not sure one can
refer to her peak performance. :-(

BTW -- My error here. Shriver has 21 Slams, but only 20 with Navratilova.
#21 was with Zvereva.

To prevent anyone else from listening to it.
you're right, it's BISEXUALITY that guys really dig, since a lot of
guys see the lesbians stuff as the warm up act for the real thing.

Best painter of the Twentieth Century. Cubist/surrealist.
Runners-up: Tanguy, Dali.
I don't think any of them were known for tennis paintings, though.
Although nothing would surprise me from Dali ("Tennis Ball Making Love
to a Stove"?).

cool beans -- I love that stuff ... though no one seems ever to have heard
of yves, so it's nice to see his name mentioned along w/ the others
you might also enjoy this hilarious dali painting send-up:
Somebody has a horrible sense of humor. I'd rather see "Dogs Playing
Tennis".
I prefer Seurat, although he's from the 19th century.
ObTennis: to get back to the topic of the original post in this thread,
what I want to know is whether "Tennis Ball Making Love to a Stove" would
classify as lesbian tennis or not. :-)
well, I can see your point ...

Hmm, looking at it in the terms of that damnable Freudian meme-plague
I'd have to say no.

Georgiana had it perfectly right -- Joan is Catalan for "John" and
there are other famous men named Joan, including Miro.
Marsha "just back from a GREAT four weeks of tennis watching" Strong
I don't think she's practicing anymore. I think she's got it down pretty
much.
