Undisputed goat would be something like 5 calendar slams and maybe close
to perfect 100% match winning rate over many yrs. That's probably
impossible as players don't really raise their level in a vacuum, need
to be pushed by other greats incrementally raising the bar, which means
losses along the way with periods of dominance. Fed/Rafa/Djoker would
prob all be lesser players if they weren't around to push each other.
Evert & MN had that dynamic going on. That's why I feel Sampras would
have been better still with these 3 on the scene as they'd force him to
keep raising his game rather than just cruising '1 break per set' mode
because he could get away with it.
When you listen to Sampras, Fed, Rafa, Djoker talk they usually say 'who
knows who goat is, just happy to be mentioned in same group'. In fact
most past greats make similar comments. They know arguments go back and
forth for decades & are aware of the different conditions across eras,
so happy to have people include them & argue their case. When I think
of goats/boats these are the guys that come to mind;
Tilden, Pancho, Budge, Hoad, Rosewall, Laver, Borg, McEnroe, Sampras,
Federer, Nadal, Djokovic.
Maybe stretch it a little to include Connors, Lendl & Emerson, but these
guys prob a rung short of being the best at their best.
There is always a ceibs bias in analysis, but pretty soon Fed/Rafa/Djoke
will pass into history like the other guys.
Who do you pick to play for your life? Hard to say. You could make a
case for any of these guys at respective peaks. I guess that's why they
are all happy to just be good enough to be in the conversation : )
For me the most unbeatable & unbelievable record is Nadal at FO.
Winning 13 FO easily (never pushed to 5 sets in finals, & only twice in
any round), while thoroughly dominating 2 tier 1 goats at FO is off the
charts. If you had to pick 1 guy to play for you and you could choose
any slam, then has to be Rafa at FO. Laver & Nadal prob stand out as
the top 2 goat level achievements. There is a chance Laver record will
be matched 1 day & someone may win 2 calendar slams again (just need a
brilliant player firing for a few yrs with no clear rivals), but Nadal
FO record is the safest record in any sport let alone tennis - & he's
not done yet.
