Fact is, we've seen former champions all over the board in their opinions evaluating the same players in relative greatness. Sometimes they even vacillate in their OWN assessments from month to month depending on how the wind is blowing. McEnroe and Evert are notorious for this kind of thing.

Those ATP 500s are not mandatory, and the appearance fees are in millions.

Undisputed goat would be something like 5 calendar slams and maybe close
to perfect 100% match winning rate over many yrs. That's probably
impossible as players don't really raise their level in a vacuum, need
to be pushed by other greats incrementally raising the bar, which means
losses along the way with periods of dominance. Fed/Rafa/Djoker would
prob all be lesser players if they weren't around to push each other.
Evert & MN had that dynamic going on. That's why I feel Sampras would
have been better still with these 3 on the scene as they'd force him to
keep raising his game rather than just cruising '1 break per set' mode
because he could get away with it.

When you listen to Sampras, Fed, Rafa, Djoker talk they usually say 'who
knows who goat is, just happy to be mentioned in same group'. In fact
most past greats make similar comments. They know arguments go back and
forth for decades & are aware of the different conditions across eras,
so happy to have people include them & argue their case. When I think
of goats/boats these are the guys that come to mind;


Tilden, Pancho, Budge, Hoad, Rosewall, Laver, Borg, McEnroe, Sampras,
Federer, Nadal, Djokovic.

Maybe stretch it a little to include Connors, Lendl & Emerson, but these

There's nothing fake about it.

He won more Wimbledon and USO than anyone in history before him, which was "the real thing" anyway, but and wanted also to get an all-time slam record for a good measure.

Sadly he had no one to push him and he miscalculated a bit or perhaps it was the pundits who miscalculated by claiming his 14 slams would stay as record forever.

Great players easily win 5+ titles at a slam. E.g. those are numbers he himself achieved at Wim/USO. But there are 4 slams, no? Simple math says 20+ is an expected outcome for truly great players with long careers.

You could even say Sampras wasn't playing in fully modern era. 1990s clay was too different from the rest of the tour and AO was only emerging as fully equal slam.

He's basically at up to 95% of Federer's achievements at Wim/USO/YEC/YE№1 despite playing 7 fewer years.

(I'm not counting 2020 and 2021 for Federer).

Did he really say "hotter"? Somehow that doesn't sound like anything
Sakari would say. I could have sworn he clarified his position on her
attractiveness and it was hardly as clear as you've portrayed it.

Paraphrasing here, what I remember him saying was that he didn't exactly
think Clijsters was objectively extremely physically attractive but that
she had certain intangible, magnetic quality that he couldn't ignore.

That being said Clijsters definitely comes across as a much more genuine
and happy person than Henin to me. Conversely, Henin seems very
introverted and calculating, almost to the point of neurosis. If their
public face is an accurate reflection of their private lives I'd
definitely say Clijsters is more attractive than Henin.

I see Clijsters just got a wildcard for a couple US tournaments. Let's
hope Sakari posts a little bit about it :)

You can see that the field at AO was really weak in early 1960s as
Lehane got four times in a row to AO final, while never getting to semis
at other slams.
