1. An "out of the blue" slam winner. Sure, Murray was a first-timer in
2012, but he was very much a known quantity becausr of his previous
finals and many years near the top of the rankings. Nothing generates
excitement quite like an unfamiliar face explosively rising to
stardom. Wouldn't have to be one of the so-called young guns, which
seems unlikely anyway.

2. A resolution of the Nadal situation. It would be best for the game
if he could return and play a reduced but still robust schedule,
hitting most of the big events. A few more great matches with the rest
of the Big 4 -- who would object? Barring that, however, a definitive
retirement would be preferable to an endless stretch of uncertainty
punctuated by occasional tournaments and long rehab periods.

3. A last hurrah for Federer. Although it's clear that Fed has the
capability of remaining in the top 10 for a long time, his days of
contending for the biggest titles are waning. Three years in a row of
only one slam final per year means any chance that appears must be
seized. One more slam would be terrific, of course, but something like
a long-awaited championship in Rome (perhaps over Nadal?) would add a
feather as well.

4. A new surface. Blue clay was tried and rejected (prematurely, IMO),
but that doesn't mean thoughtful experimentation with court surfaces
should cease. Something novel and quick would add much-needed spice.

5. A fix for Paris. It's not feasible to hold a Masters event the week
before the WTF. A big tournament in which the only players who care
are Frenchmen and Ferrer is not viable.

6. A clear-skied slam. Miserable rain at Roland Garros. Rain at Wimby,
then the roof. Horrible wind at Flushing. And torrents of sweat in
Melbourne. :) Good weather for tennis would be a pleasant change.

You'd rather prefer complete retirement than rehab + play when fit? Lame...

A reduced-schedule Nadal who could still challenge the other top
players would be great. A "will he or won't he?" Nadal who rehabbed
more than he played would be bad. He would be a distraction rather
than a force. Also, I don't believe Nadal could play *well* with that
kind of schedule. No one wants to see Rafa come back from three months
off, lose in the second round of a tune-up and then the third round of
a slam, then take another two months off.

My hope list:

1) Injury free top players.
2) Djoko continues his strangehold with a slam or two.
3) Delpo nails his "injury comeback" and wins a slam.
4) Surprise slam winner (even someone from Berfych/Tsonga/top20 group).
5) Please...even one sudden young player rising into top10 (JJ?)
6) Jack Sock fulfils my very early predidiction about him (well first he has to get into journeymen ranks).
7) Henri Kontinen....or anyone....(some non-nieminen finnish player is needed...even challenger level....)...
8) ...may be one more even younger (say 17-18y) player making a sudden rush into top50?
9) Year-End #1 is decided at YEC/later stages of a season...

I don't think Hoffa pad is career ending injury at all. The problem is
that it may take LOOOOOOOOONG time to heal and maybe doesn't heal at all
without operation...which is the path Rafa is taking. So it could happen
exactly as you say, needing to have that fat pad removed at some point.

My short list for 2013:

1. Healthy Rafa

2. 9th MC title

3. 8th RG title

Not so preoccupied with surprise slam winners. If I had to pick...
Ferrer/Berdych.

And I'm sure top 4 will make the year interesting, regardless of outcomes.

What is so damn funny about it?!

I read some discussion board where people who had hoffa syndrome
discussed about it... it's something that didn't go away easily at all,
and came back too. Someone said that he only got it healed after an
operation... after LONG period(s) of other treatment.

You still think that Rafa has some "silent ban" but elects to work in
the gym instead of training tennis? That's just dumb.

Sampras wasn't such a thunderbolt at the time.
He didn't just surface all of a sudden at the USO and win.

When you become the youngest-ever champion in the history of a slam,
that's a bold move. Sampras had never even been in the Top 10 before
the 1990 USO. He started the year at No. 61! He lost in the first
round of Wimbledon that year. His two previous career titles were both
minor events. Sampras did have a few good wins under his belt,
principally over Wilander the previous year (though that was before
the world had realized that Wilander was washed up), but they could
have been written off as flukes. At the '90 USO, Sampras beat Lendl,
Mac, and Agassi (the final in straights) -- no flukes there.

I'm kinda rooting for Serena now. She snuck up to 15 slams without
anyone really paying attention. 4 more & she's passes Navratilova/Evert
- who woulda thought that would happen with her half-arsed approach?

She is getting pretty old though at 31, but doesn't seem to have slowed
down. In fact her serve is getting better & her vast experience should
make her a big factor for a few yrs to come. All depends on her
motivation, which still seems very high.

So my realistic short term wishes are to see Fed & Rafa get to 8 at
Wim/FO, & Serena to crack 19 slams.

Faster surfaces would be great but I would not be so keen on the return of s/v. I can still remember the days when Sampras vs Ivanisevic at Wimbledon was the epitome of boredom and three- or four-shot rallies would get wildly applauded. An "epic" five-set match would last less than three hours, and two and a half of those would be spent walking from one side of the court to the other for the next serve. No, what I want to see is more attacking and more net game, not s/v.

A 100% increase in serve 'n volley would be desirable though. If we get that we'd see a serve volley point about 20% of the time perhaps... That'd be a great improvement imo and not something leading to any extreme.

This today from Janne Eerikinen.

http://www.urheilulehti.fi/lisaa-lajeja/nieminen-kohtaa-suomalaispelaajan-koko-suomalainen-tennis-tarvitsee-nostetta

It seems that the praise for Kontinen goes higher and higher, as it is
longer and longer since anyone has seen him play. A couple of things
translated from the article: "Kontinen is one of the most potential
ball strikers in the world, and he can hurt almost anyone with his
shots". "You have to remember Kontinen was in the previous years
better than Raonic or Janowicz".

I do think he was really good and different and good to watch when he
didn't have injuries few years ago. But I am giving up hope that his
body is made for pro tennis. Every time he is recovering from some
injury, there is news about something else, and again 3 months off or
6 months off.

The other young Finnish guys just are not good enough.

*sigh* Graf 1986 USO. So close, and how great that would have been. She never
got another chance.

Yeah, she had mp's on Navratilova in semis - 1 would have been clean
winner but caught top of net & fell back on her side. Woulda cleaned up
Sukova in final for sure.

One odd stat for me in Graf v Navratilova rivalry is their USO h2h.
They played 5 times & Graf only won once, & even there after being down
3-6 2-4 in '89 final. MN beat Graf in '85, '86, '87 & '91 USOs. Easily
could have been 5-0 clean sweep to the old dame.

Yes, you wouldn't think that hardcourt would be Martina's best surface against
Graf. Graf might have been a bit lucky that Martina was going through a stage of
being a bit Graf-obsessed in '88-'89 (according to the commentators). She was
consumed by beating Graf so probably tried too hard and became shaky when in a
winning position.
