Many people here talk about Petkovic, but I like Görges more. (I
always thought that is the correct spelling, and the screen in
Stuttgart confirmed that).
She has a big serve, which is an advantage over many WTA players. She
has a big forehand. And most importantly she plays brave, aggressive,
exciting tennis. People have talked about her other qualities, and she
does really well in that area too.
Very good match against Stosur, who also played well, but Görges was
even better.

Not on US tv, it didn't. Nor does the WTA site. But her own home page
definitely says Görges.
Odd. Guess someone in the WTA in charge oif US broadcasts thinks we
can't handle diacritical marks. They're probably right ... 8;)

I didn't mean the graphics in the TV screen. They always use "ae" and
"oe" in all sports. Believe me, I know. Half of the Finnish names are
always ruined like that. I meant the big screen or whatever it was in
the wall of the tennis hall in Stuttgart with the names and pictures
of the players.

What I find interesting is that when ESPN covers baseball, they put the
diacritical marks in for the players from Latin America, the Lópezes or
Martínezes of the world. The same Lópezes and Martínezes who play
tennis don't normally get the accent mark.

Having borrowed lots of words from lots of other languages is a great
thing about English, and once the words were borrowed, stripping them
of their diacritical marks was also a great idea. A language with so
many borrowed words from so many sources would be cluttered if it had
been otherwise.
However, if there is a time to keep them, proper names and
geographical names present the strongest case. Even then, I rarely
bother. If I wanted to write something about Karl Bohm conducting the
BPO or the VPO, I use neither the umlaut nor the 'oe' substitute for
it. He's a made man; his reputation doesn't hinge on this.
BTW, Gorges seems to playing a great match!

I think Georges played a great match. Nice to see some new faces on
the WTA and on occasion get a decent match out of it like today
against Wozniacki.
I was hoping Georges would win. Wozniacki has won and has plenty of
money unlike Georges. So I wanted her to win because it looks like she
and her family need the money so they can all get a decent haircut.
The family sitting in Georges' box had hair that needed serious
attention.

Obviously, Finnish should get rid of the front vowels. :-p (It would
certainly make the language easier to pronounce; "koulu", for example,
is rather easier than "löyly" for a non-native speaker.)

That was a new way to mess up with her name. "Georges" would be a
French name. Her name is Görges, which in lack of all the letters is
often spelled Goerges .
And she won the title. I only saw the second set delayed, but always
nice to see offense beat defense. Well done! I thought her father
would get heart attack any time both yesterday and today.
