Just curious?
It is Julie Halard who is marrying her coach.

Gigi's opponent Julie Halard is marrying her coach is what the
commentator said. I also recall his referring to Conchita as Gigi's
"companion".
He said Julie Halard is marrying her coach, although, if you ask me,
Gertrude Stein looks femme compared to Halard! I didn't hear him say
Conchita was Gigi's companion. Conchita is out, but I didn't know Gigi
was. If it's true, they make a nice couple.
Gigi was at Conchita's Wimbleton match against Graf (the announcer there
said she was helping to coach Conchita), and Conchita was at
Gigi's Wimbleton mixed doubles final, which she and (I'm drawing a
blank) lost to Martina and Jonathan Stark.
Actually, no. Since some time ago, it is known that Conchita and Gigi are a
couple. It's actually been thoroughly discussed in this newsgroup.
I found it amusing that the commentator used the word "companion". It's the
first such reference I've heard from someone calling a women's tennis match. I
recall at Wimbledon, they would always choke up when the camera showed Conchita
in Gigi's matches and vice versa. They'd say they were... uhum... good friends.

I too heard him say companion and it is no surprise to me. Someone here
said that Conchita is "out"...I had heard no such thing....can anyone
etll me where to confirm this.
Whether they are out or not or whther they are lovers or not I am glad to
see them showing so much support for one another. THey go to each
other's each and every match and I think that's incredible. THey are
both on tour and have a lot of stress of their own yet they make it to
every match. If they are lovers they don' seem to care what the media
says (just my impression as a lesbian tennis fan) and if they aren't they
still support one another ten-fold even with the rumors that fly about
and I think that that is a wonderful show of support for one another.
Wish I could tell them that *smirk* .
Anyway, the announcer did say companion and at first it did not catch me
off guard until I remembered that usually the media refer to them as
"good good friend" of one another.

He said that Hallard (not Gigi) was going to marry her coach.

However, I didn't know that Gigi was lesbian, and seeing their friendship
I had indulged in wishful thinking, "oh, this is great, here are
two women supporting each other's careers, maybe doubles expert
gigi has pointers for conchita, maybe conchita can help giga
advance her singles play, they both seem relaxed and like the love the game
(vs. some kids who are pushed by their parents into it), and isn't it
great that a straight woman can be friends with a lesbian without
thinking that she wants her." oh, well...
anyway, i completely agree with your comments, carrie. it's also good to
see two straight gals (Davenport and M.J. Fernandez) supporting each
other on the tour. I got the feeling from this book that, at least a few
years ago, the women tended to keep to themselves, only coaches and
hitting partners accompanying them--no
friends, no family--and most boyfriends and husbands (with the exception
of Judith Wiesner's husband, who is an older guy and who feels it's
important to be there for her) can't afford or
don't want to follow them around on tour--not a healthy environment.

Gigi Fernandez was at the 1993 Lesbian/Gay/Bi/Transgender March on
Washington. Not proof that she is a lesbian, but certainly means she is
"gay-friendly". Martina spoke there of course. BTW, when Gigi was an up
and coming player, it was Martina who first brought notice to her tennis
talents. Mike

David Mercer is excellent -- unfortunately, the USA network has him
languishing on the outer courts giving sound-bite-size recaps of the
action. If the USA network had any brains they would float Ted Robinson
and bring Mercer up to the #1 crew.
[Excuse me.....any mention of the "USA network" and "brains" in the same
sentence was entirely coincidental.]

I thought it was the other way around - Gigi is out, Conchita not (yet).
Believe you're right--I stand corrected, according to most of these posts.

Confused? You won't be after the next episode of ... R.S.T.

you are attributing stuff to my keyboard that never came out of it. So,

What the hell do you mean? I believe Gigi and Conchita share the same
coach, therefore, they are around together. Some people.

What?! Are they still publishing that rag? I saw a copy at a Sports Town
about a year and a half ago, thought ``Ooooh, a new tennis mag with nifty
pictures,`` snitched a subscription card, and sent it off (I will
subscribe to just about any tennis publication out there).
In a few weeks I received my first issue and a bill, which I paid
promptly. In a few more weeks, I received another copy of the same issue I
had already received, then ... nothing. Months go by. I finally get around
to mailing off a curt letter of complaint and a copy of my canceled check.
I soon thereafter receive another copy of the magazine. Then ... nothing.
Months go by. I never seem the magazine on the newsstands again. I assume
it has gone out of business.
So now I stick with old stand-bys TENNIS (which also sends me duplicate
copies for some inexplicable reason so it bores me to tears twice as often
as it should) and TENNIS WEEK (which despite its name is really intended
to be a bi-weekly and which arrives on a schedule set perhaps in
coordination with some ancient Mayan agricultural calendar but which has
no bearing with any 14-day notion of 2 weeks that I am familiar with.)
Net resources are quickly rendering all of the above obsolete, and I am
looking forward to the day when I can either let my subscriptions lapse or
the publishers snap to their collective senses and start putting out an
entertaining, informative, attractive publication *on time*.

It sounds like you are in desperate need of online magazines about tennis!
There was a recent posting about the availability of tennis magazine on
microsoft network WINDOWS'95. There is someone @msn.com who is in
charge of online magazines. They have also announced a web page coming
out in January '95 and plans for online chats.
If you are a tennis purist then don't read the next sentence.
{Nick bolleteri of 1800USANICK fame and the jensen brothers will be the
featured guests on the first online chats}
The nice thing about online magazines is that they do come out on time.

So if Gigi goes that way, does that make Natasha Zvereva a lesbian too? (or
bi), they've been playing double togheter for so long, plus stuff like her
celebration after they won the US Open (flexing biceps muscle... etc)
Are we to understand by this that lesbianism rubs off? Or that you have
to be a lesbian (or bi) to be female and hang out with a lesbian? Or that
only a lesbian would flex her non-muscles on national TV?........
Hmmmmm....
By all accounts Zvereva is straight; indeed USA showed her kissing her
boyfriend after the US Open doubles final. (He is a tennis player, and
had sat beside Martinez during the match.) Zvereva is a very strong,
independent woman, who obviously feels confident enough about her
sexuality to not feel threatened hanging out with people of different
persuasions. And she plays damn good tennis to boot.
(quote regarding media reports on Gigi's and Conchita's sexuality deleted)
:So if Gigi goes that way, does that make Natasha Zvereva a lesbian too? (or

Oh please! Just because someone (a) likes to mug for the camera and
entertain the crowd, and (b) happens to have the good sense to play
doubles with Gigi Fernandez, that does not mean that one is gay, or
straight, or asexual, or anything else! First of all, since when did
flexing a bicep for a camera have anything to do with sexuality?
Second, the last time I checked, one of the criteria for selecting a
partner to play doubles with was not "sexual orientation".
I'd use the term "guilt by association" to explain the logic behind
the above post, except that I object to the use of the term "guilt"
when discussing sexual orientation. On the USA Today broadcast of
the Women's Doubles final, Tracy Austin stated that Zvereva was
"spending time with" Scott Davis, who was sitting with Conchita and
Zvereva's coach. If we use the same logic outlined above, then surely
Gigi is not a lesbian because she is playing with a doubles player who
is not a lesbian! The fact is, one's sexuality have NOTHING to do
with one's ability to play tennis. Some great tennis players -
Martina Navratilova and Bill Tilden come to mind here - happen to
be/have been gay; others - Chris Evert and John McEnroe are/were
straight. By the way, Martina and Chris played doubles for a while.
Does that tell us anything at all about their sexuality?
Sorry for ranting
