I think she is taken Pablo. That handsome gentleman named Gigi Fernandez seems
to be a constant presence at Conchita's matches. Sorry (I think).

I think Conchita Martinez's lesbianism is pretty well-known, not that
she's very 'out and proud' about it. It sounds like Jana Novotna and Hana
Mandlikova (her coach) are partners, but I understand Martinez and
Fernandez have broken up. Clearly, Martina Navratilova and BJ King's
openness about lesbian/bisexual sexual orientations didn't open the
flood-gates of open admission.

Anyone know of any gay male professional tennis players?

It neither confirms it nor denies it; it's just what happened.

However I can add this, if we must persue the off-court lives
of the tennis elite -- when Hana and Jana were at Saddlebrook
for the L&L tournament in 1994, they wee quite openly affectionate
in what was a very low-key atmosphere.

I have also heard Lisa Raymond and Rennae Stubbs have been
quite openly affectionate at recent tournies.

Geez, I *hate* that I love this gossip so much, but I can't deny
that I do! Especially when it involves my "sisters"

I am now searching my brain to remember where I read this -- I know that
sounds rather flimsy -- but I definitely thought that she was out, and I
think I read it in _Out_ magazine; one of their lists of 100 most notables

Thanks, Sarah. I still cannot locate this reference, but I know I read
it, and it was not a statement by Novotna, but about her, describing her
as, uh, "open about her sexuality;" and as the *only* out player on the
tour now Martina is not playing any more. It was either in _Out_
magazine, or perhaps ... _Diva_? Which makes more sense, as I would hve
read it in the store, rather than have bought it. I would say, two years
ago.

In 1993, after Novotna's RU appearance at Wimbledon the Evening Standard
wrote a long article about what a change it represented that no one had
raised the issue of her sexuality. Which the ES did, at length.

It may seem to the casual observer that all this speculation is just
gossip mongering, but in a way it's trying to get some positive images
of lesbians and/or gays.

For me just seeing Gigi Fernandez in the players box during Conchita's
Wimbledon matches, or reading about the Novotna/Mandlikova rumours are
positive images, not least because they help to introduce the subject
naturally to the media and the public.

I agree, Sarah, and now I feel bad for making "light" of this topic.
*Nothing* in the world made me feel more positive than when Martina
came out and when she was televised speaking at the Gay Pride March
in 1994 (1995-?) -- dates always elude me.

Which makes me wish that players like Gigi, Conchita, Jana, Hana,
Lisa, and Rennae would just be up front with it all and let it go at
that. I realize it might cause some jeopardy to their careers,
especially endorsenment deals (isn't it sad to have this be a reality
in this days and age), but the good they would do would so outweigh
the negative, IMO.

Hi Marsha, I was reading an interview with Rennae Stubbs in a German
magazine, at the time she was really good friends with Steffi, in it she
was asked if she (and possibly Steffi) were gay and perhaps in a
relationship Rennae said no, and that neither of them were gay. So, what do

Hey, nothing wrong in making light of it, it's a bit of fun that has a
serious benefit too. Straight people like to gossip about famous
heterosexuals, why shouldn't we !

I suspect that the main problem with tennis players coming out lies less
with the players themselves than with the powers that be on the tour. I
understand they were still pretty uncomfortable with Martina being out
right up until her retirement.

The others probably feel unable to "officially" come out for this
reason, but at least they watch each other's matches in the areas where
the cameras go and don't secrete themselves in some back seat. A couple
of years ago BBC Radio 5 (the sports station) were commentating on one
of Gigi's doubles matches at Wimbledon and were describing who was in
the players' box. The commentator quite casually said "and there's
Conchita Martinez, girlfriend of Gigi Fernandez". No-one sued him and he
was still doing his job the next day!

Have you read Michael Mewshaw's book, Ladies Of The Court? Very
interesting, although IMHO to be taken with a slight pinch of salt.

Again. I really don't know. I feel sure she and Steffi were only good
friends (how long has Steffi been dating that race driver guy?).

Maybe Rennae "changed her mind" since you indicate the article was a
while ago. Or maybe she's bi. Or maybe she and Lisa are just good,
affectionate doubles partners. It really doesn't matter (to me
anyway). I just wish if it *were* true, she could be honest about it,
and realistically I don't think she *could*. An that I think is very
sad.

Nothing in particular, just that I don't think the tour as a whole can
be quite as bad as he describes re burnout, abuse of players. He
concentrates a little too much on the negative I feel. But apart from
that it's a very enlightening read.

You're right, Ladies of the Court is actually not too bad, although with a
very negative viewpoint -- like you said. He gives lots of interesting
slants and viewpoints on events.
But have you read Short Circuit, which is an earlier book by Meeshaw?
Reading it, you'd think the tour [in the '70s] consisted of nothing but
wholesale drug abuse and tanking!
I haven't found a single other source which verifies anything except a
couple of his mild complaints.
So, a pinch of salt at the very least!

Makes me wonder why anyone cares.

Yes, I remember that. However, they do talk about all sorts of things
on the Radio 5 Wimbledon commentary (usually older fans saying that
Christine Truman was the greatest player ever and such). I doubt very
much you'd get that kind of remark on the telly coverage - with conchita
and Gigi it was usually "friend"; about Hana and Jana they *always* say
"confidante".

That's got something to do with the fact that Christine Truman Janes is
one of the R5 commentators...

I'm actually glad that they acknowledge the relationship at all, but I
have always thought it would be interesting to see heterosexual relation-
ships acknowledged in the same way: "Here we see Boris' 'good friend'
Barbara burying her head in her lap" or "And there's Kimberly Williams,
'confidante' of Pete Sampras"

Quite. We also get a fair bit of adoration for Frew McMillan and Wendy
Turnbull for exactly the same reasons. The Radio 5 team do talk a load
of trivia a lot of the time (especially when it's raining, and perhaps
the most famous time was when the other commentators were discussing the
finer details of Agassi's shorts and asked Fred perry about them, who
turned around and said he hadn't noticed them because he was too busy
watching the tennis) but I've never ever heard them discuss the love
lives of the players. Mind you, it *is* the BBC after all...
