Remember when Whisper and Fan used to call Federer an egotist and
unsportsman-like when he'd blitz lower ranked players JUST BECAUSE he
could... to them it was all ego and his being desperate to show off...
but now you don't hear a peep about Rafa doing it... strange double
standard...

I didn't believe that about Fed then and don't sense that in Rafa
now...

Random table tennis comparison: Here's an anecdote about former U.S.
champion Eric Boggan. He was 15 years old (and already reigning U.S.
champ) at the time of this match:

"In June, '79 in Kingston, Jamaica, Eric beat Jamaican National Ernie

terrible misunderstanding - that was NOT the reason fed was called
egotist.

Apparently ITTF president had very little understanding of competitive
spirit. Taking it easy on a lesser opponent would be patronizing.

interesting topic, deserves a thread of its own.
always an issue in many sports what is called "running it up."

2 cases:
-texas few yrs ago a girls HS basketball (state champion caliber) team
beat another team (with only 5 players total) like 100-5 and the
winning coach (from catholic school) was promptly fired for not
obeying the spirit of HS competition.
-growing trend in NCAA football to run up scores to achieve higher
voted ranking. some teams, notably ohio st., don't seem to participate
in this approach, while wisconsin, obviously does. right or wrong?

i recall in NCAA football, spurrier at florida frequently running it
up on others, georgia once, and the losing coach said it's not his job
to slow down his team, it's MY job

I wouldn't want to watch such match. Also I'd imagine that would make
the loser feel even worse, getting alms.

yes, and if the loser cannot take it, he needs to get the fuck out of
the business...so simple
