I have no doubts that the 2012 seaons will be ALL ABOUT winning the
Olympic singles gold... he'd have the singular distinction of having
won singles AND doubles if he were to do that... and no matter how he
phrases his chase of the record book and various 'individual marks of
sporting distinction' he'd LOVE having both singles and doubles
gold...
As we all know winning another Wimbledon would be a priority, I would
have to guess... one more gives him 7 to tie Pete... he's likely got 3
or 4 shots to get one more, so he could do it...
And I REALLY think winning a second FO is very important to Federer...
I suspect he doesn't want to have anyone suggest he was 'just lucky'
to get the one he's got and certainly he'd like 2 cycles of the career
slam, though that would just be a nice bi-product of having won 2
FO's...
So, something like 20 slams as a nice round number... or just getting
to the 20 slam winning threshold for men in the Open Era... might
become a narrative line if Federer were to win another couple of
majors...

He will play for many more years. Even after losing his touch Rogi
will still be the man on the circuit with the slams.
Wheelchair experts keep saying that this or that player should retire
because he/she does not perform to the expectations of these losers.
How stupid can they get?
They know that they lose their appeal after retirement and the public
soon forgets them dragging them out for special occasions but that is
not enough for a top professional. It is not enough even for weekend
warriors who dream of dropping dead at age 80 after hitting an
incredible winner.

because of his back being so bad. Imagine if he had no back problem? how long
would he have carried on? Imagine he actually LOVED tennis and had no back
problem, how long then ?
Ok, so if Fed is 100% healthy and LOVES tennis why would he of all people quit
before he was 36/37? I can't see it happening. In fact I can see him playing at
40 still.

It probably would not make much difference. I am saying this in
general because Rogi, whom I promised not to call a jerk any more, is
not my favorite. So what if he loses to some upcoming players? He
could still win a slam or two and a few other tournaments. He could be
a top 10 or even below player and could still play. What is there to
do after retirement? Watching his arteries harden or Mirka get fat and
whine about not getting enough attention? Being on the tour must be an
incredible experience.

But Agassi didn't have kids until later; when he quit they were just
approaching school age.

I do not think Federer will want to travel the world alone while his wife
and kids are back in Switzerland. At some point, they will have to make
some hard choices: either they home-school the kids, or Federer quites, or
they have to resign themselves to spending a lot of time apart. Federer
and his wife have basically never been apart since they met in 2000.

Like Dave said, kindergarten and pre-school type of things. But it is
just playing and spending time somewhere while the parents are
working. Maybe it is similar in other countries, but nobody calls it
"school" here. School starts at 7, when you are in classrooms and
study reading and writing etc. (Of course, any half-intelligent person
learns to read at 4, but that's when you officially start learning
it... :-))

Sounds like we're talking about the same thing. In US, most kids are
in some sort of preschool by 4, definitely in kindergarten by 5, and
in first grade, where they're sitting at desks and learning, by 6.

It's hard choices from here on out. Federer loves to play but at some
point he's going to be losing more than he's winning and he has to
decide if loves playing more than he hates losing. Or just gets bored
by losing.

and not worry about winning or losing? He doesn't need the money and I
am sure he can get wild cards if necessary.
Let us see in a couple of years or if he suffers an injury that messes
with his movement. For now, he is the man with 16 slams who has been in
the last 8 slam finals and won 3 of the last 4.
How old will Federer be when getting to the QF of a slam is a heroic
deed? Will he still be playing professional tennis given everything he
has achieved?
Perhaps he can switch to doubles at some point.

Well, anyone can say they don't worry about losing but when it comes
down to it ... That said, Federer seems to make transitions fairly
well, although he was testy last year, which could have been caused by
any number of professional and/or personal things.
Like I said, I'm much more curious about what he's going to do after
retirement. He seems more likely than, say, Sampras or Agassi to do
something tennis related.

short circuit... if you can't be the guy at the the top or right next

vague "someday" when all the powers suddenly come together and he has
a tremendous tournament, making a run for a slam win...
Perhaps, he can do that... or that will BE ENOUGH for him... I tend to
doubt it... I don't think he like to play having Verdasco types (and
increasingly lesser players) putting the wood to him tournament after
tournament... so, it all depends on how long he can remain at that
absolute elite level of play...
THAT'S THE REAL QUESTION, as far as I am concerned... How long can
Federer continue to play at that absolute elite level?

Prediction can also be based on analytic skills.
Can't see more a poor prediction than watching Federer play his matches
in 2008 FO and watching Nadal's...and come to the conclusion that
Federer should win the final. And Wilander is supposed to be
professional. What do they know, nothing. It wasn't even distantly a
close final. It was the worst trashing of #1 ever in a slam final.

TT is way better than Hazelwood, that is for sure.
He does tend to get bent out of shape and start cursing when he runs out
of usable mentation, but he seems more honest than Whisper.
And he wears his Nadal-love proudly. That is the redeeming feature, IMHO.
If he can learn something about the game and learn to respect its lofty
practioners, there could be hope for him.
But he tends to get all too emo on rst far too often for imaginary and
imagined slights.

Indeed. I guess that's why I find it's posts boring as hell. Often Vari
writes a long post while having nothing to say.
