Excerpt:

NOTE the glint as Rafael Nadal thrashes around Rod Laver Arena next
week. It's from his high-tech watch, thin as a chip, months to handcraft
and $500,000 if you happen to fancy one.

Its maker, a suave, hand-kissing Frenchman named Richard Mille, who
accompanied Nadal to Melbourne this week, says there are already 200
''quite wealthy'' customers on a waiting list for a limited edition of
the high-tech, light-as-air, laboriously crafted 20-gram timepieces.

''And they're screaming, coming at us with lawyers to get one,'' he says.

But he won't compromise and make more. ''It's a piece of art on your arm.''

It's also an expensive marketing tool. Nadal has already smashed ''five
or six'' of the watches. ''Yes, it can break,'' Mille says. ''It can fly
across the court.''

He isn't bothered though, asserting that the drama of a $500,000
accident can only whip up keener interest in the most exclusive watch in
the world. ''People will maybe be watching to see this happen.''
===============================

In a valiant fight against rampant price gouging that seems the rule
everywhere else, Richard Mille managed to avoid raising the price of the
watch.

Yay! :)

That behemot weighs 20 grams? Well, for the first time I *am*
impressed with Nadal's watch (I'm not a fan of "exposed innards" watch
look or big cases, I like my watches more low-key)

I do - or I will, as soon as I remember where the "#%"#$"#$" # is that
I left mine. I don't like getting my cellphone out of my pocket and
turn the screen on to see the time. Would rather glance at my wrist.

Well, I mainly posted in jest, because of the prevalence of cell phones as a
replacement for so many things. I do wear a watch sometimes, though I've
always found them uncomfortable.

I feel uncomfortable without a watch. I can't even play tennis without
a watch :-)

If you felt it was uncomfortable, you probably wore it too tightly. A
watch should be loose enough that you can put two fingers under the
watchband.

Also, my job has me working at nuclear power plants. I'd never take my
cell phone inside the vital facilities, and, actually, turn it off since
I rarely get any capabilities at most power plants given their location
away from cell towers so it would drain my cell battery. I don't have
that problem with my watch.

It's not that, they just don't feel right on my wrist no matter what I do.

Considering the problems the IpHone apparently had with its alarm,
perhaps buying an actual alarm clock isn't such a bad idea.

(I've got a 25-year-old alarm clock radio on which the radio no longer
works, but the alarm does, and a battery-operated alarm clock that I won
in a contest about 20 years ago.)

Didn't Venus Williams get a point penalty against Davenport at the AO
back in 199 or so when those hair beads came undone?

Yeah, I read about that incident and was surprised... well, not that
surprised as I've never bought into the hype about how Apple products "just
work"...riiiiiight.

I wear mine when I play tennis - need to know when I have to leave for
my next match.

If you are running late, just call your next opponent and ask them to press
'pause'.
