I knew it! Cheng's gonna get mad now, but he'll get even. Didn't I guess
Fan first, Sean? He was great to watch in the last two Detroit Teams.
How much of the year will he actually live in the U.S., and whereabouts?
How does he plan to make a living? Will he play in Europe mostly?
Curious minds (& pongers with not much else going on) want to know!

that is very refreshing, sort of.
i can't wait to see him play!!!!!!! had a BLT lately sean? i just want you
to know that was one of the best sandwiches i have had in a long time!!!!!!
i was logged on as c7 at the mining co. that night ..... do you remember?

anyway about the #1 player i just don't know how to feel about someone new,
but very interesting....nice post.

oh, and about that SPO stuff, i guess you did it the hard way? what is
your mental program?

Sean,

Where did this guy come from? His rating is huge. How did he acquire that
rating? It would be hard to do considering that the top rating was Cheng's
at 2781. Just curious. Or was he granted that rating as a starting point
in the US assuming that he can beat anyone here. One last question what
style of player is he.

As I remember Fan beat Cheng in the 1996 US Team event. They played in
a semi final cross over I think.

I'm sure Sean will have more info but from what I remember Fan got his
rating by going undefeated in the last 2 US Open Team Championships in
Detroit with teams from Hungary which won both times. Cheng's teams

never met Hungary so the two have not played each other. Fan is a two
winged looping attacker with an amazing bh loop kill one has to see to
believe. In the 96 Teams he beat Germany's Vasile Florea who was then
ranked #30 in the world and fresh off winning that year's US Open.
Florea's rating was 2889 at the time so I think Fan's 2857 is pretty

legitimate. I understand Fan recently defeated Werner Schlager of
Austria who is ranked around #20 in the world and was a quarter
finalist in last year's World Championships.

Fan is 28 years old, borned in Sandong, China and residing in Hungary
at present. He uses ASTI equipment and is sponsored by them. He will
be participating in the 98 US Open in Houston.

You are right. I went back and checked the 1997 Jan/Feb issue of the USATT Magazine and Fan did beat Cheng 2-0 in the semi final cross over in the 1996 US Open Teams. Thanks for bringing it up.

As I recall Fan didn't play Cheng at the 97 Teams, but he beat Cheng in
96. At the time Cheng remarked ruefully that he was surprised how much
Fan had improved. Now Cheng says he (Cheng) is playing better than in 96
and he is confident he can beat Fan. The strange thing is though, even
if Cheng can beat Fan 3 times in a row, Fan would still be higher rated.
At the U.S. Open, if Cheng elects to, play the Teams, O-30, O-40, and
all-star events, he can't play the ITTF events, I guess so there would
be no possible rematch with Fan until Detroit Teams (assuming Fan will
play the ITTF events).

Question is, how legit was Florea's rating?

I could be wrong, but I believe he is closer to 30. He and Gao Jun have
known each other for many years and she said they are about the same
age, also about the same as Amy Feng.

Now, now, Robert. This is the very sort of post that gets TC in hot

For those of you with printers at home try this:

Print all of these pictures except 5 or 6.

Clip out the itty bitty Fan Yiyong's leaving some room on the left
side of the picture.

Staple the left side of the pictures together.

Flip through them to view Fan Yiyong's backhand loop against underspin
stroke.

This sequence is actually from the beginning of the match in the
Finals.

I would have filmed more except I spent all of my batteries energy
filming Lily Yip vs Jansa Reed.

I'm sure this will help Lefties in the Northern Maryland Hemisphere.
Those in the Southern Hemisphere can do this in their heads.

While you were flipping the horizontal, I flipped Fan to the other
side of the table to perform a slightly unusual backhand looping flip
shot off serve. He is slightly out of position for the shot since
Cabrera served backspin to his playing elbow position.
