As I wrote below, PV is Potomac Valley, which is the AAU Junior Olympic
region that the Maryland Table Tennis Center is located in. It includes
parts of Maryland and Northern Virginia. The MDTTC is located in Maryland,
near Virginia, in the middle of PV. 35 of the 37 junior players from
Maryland/Virginia at the Junior Olympics live in PV; two live just outside.
There were 6 players from Virginia at the Junior Olympics, all from MDTTC
and PV.

In the team category of the Junior Olympics, players must represent and all
be from the same state or the same AAU region.

Here is some commentary!

The Junior Olympics had 137 players this year, which I believe is a record.
The tournament was ran right on time, with personalized time schedules for
everyone. (Seems like an obvious thing, yet it wasn't done until NATT began
running it last year.)

I'll comment below on some of the events. I was coaching/watching our
players, so can mostly comment on them.

Peter swept the Under 10 events - Junior Oympic Singles, Junior Nationals
Singles, and Teams & Doubles. All four semifinalists here were MDTTC -
Peter, Vincent, Devin Zhang and Janial Li.

> Under 12: Marcus Jackson (PV) d. Michael Mast (OH)
> Under 14: Yao Xu (PV) d. Trevor Runyan (CA)

Yao swept the Under 14 events last year at age 12, and almost did so again
this year, winning both singles events and doubles. As noted below, he lost
in the teams in a flukey match. Yao seemed off most of this tournament, but
made up for it with excellent tactics and ball placement. Trevor, who has
been training in Indiana recently, has a very nice two-winged looping game.

> Under 16: Pan Lin (NJ) d. Khaleel Asgarali (MD)

Khaleel led 2-0 and 3-2, but Pan won 4-3.

> Under 22: Jared Lynch (IN) d. Samson Dubina (OH)
>
> GIRLS
> Under 10: Amy Huang (FL) d. Amy Xiao (PV)

Amy would dominate and win all matches she played against girls under 12.
(You can only play in your lowest event in Junior Olympics.)

> Under 12: Linden Li (PV) d. Janice Lan (PV)

A nice surprise! Janice is a relatively new player playing in only her
second tournament.

> Under 14: Barbara Wei (PV) d. Sarah Zheng (FL)

These two have been rivals for years. Sarah won last year; Barbara won this
year.

Throughout this tournament, there were a LOT of matches among Sarah,
Barbara, Rita, Jennifer Mast, Atha Fong, Kathy Wang and Katherine Wu. It
seemed all of them went the full distance!

> Under 22: Louise Giam (PV) (only entry)
>
> JUNIOR NATIONALS SINGLES
>
> BOYS
> Under 10: Peter Li (PV) d. Devin Zhang (PV)

Again, all four semifinalists were MDTTC! This time, however, since Devin
had knocked Vincent out in the quarterfinals, it was Charlie Sun (8) joining
Peter, Devin and Janiel Li in the semifinals. Charlie had to win two matches
(plus a bye) to get into the semifinals, where he faced Peter.

> Under 12: Kevin Ma (PV) d. Preston Chin (GA)

Marcus Jackson, who had won Under 12 the day before, dropped out due to a
shoulder injury. Kevin came through for us! In the semifinals, Michael Mast
of Ohio, in a best of five, led 2-1 in games and 8-1 in fourth - and Kevin
came back to win!

> Under 14: Yao Xu (PV) d. Joseph Cochran (IN)

Joseph has a nice forehand loop/backhand hit game. He upset Trevor Runyan in
the semifinals.

> Under 16: Pan Lin (NJ) d. Eric Finkelstein (NJ)

Pan Lin had defeated MDTTCer Michael Shao in the semifinals, 4-2. The other
expected semifinal - Eric vs. Khaleel Asgarali - didn't happen. In the
quarterfinals, Khaleel was up 2-0 on Yao Xu. Yao won the third. Khaleel went
up 10-5 match point in the fourth, but Yao ran off 7 in a row to win! He won
the fifth easily. So Yao faced Eric in the semifinals. In that match, Yao
was down 2-1, but up 9-5 in the fourth when he suddenly started playing
Eric's forehand, when he'd gotten the lead by playing his backhand. Eric
came back to win in deuce and make the final, where he would lose to
teammate Pan 3-2.

> Under 18: Mark Hazinski (IN) d. Khaleel Asgarali (MD)

Khaleel upset Pan Lin in the semifinals, 3-2, in one of the craziest and
longest matches I've ever seen. Three games were deuce, the other two 11-9.
Khaleel won the first 11-9. He led 9-5 in the second, but lost 18-16 (!)
after Pan fought off about 7 game points. Khaleel won the next game 11-9. In
the fourth, Khaleel was up 10-8 match point, but Pan ended up winning, I
think 14-12. In the fifth, Khaleel again led 10-8 match point, and again it
went deuce. Khaleel finally won, I believe 15-13 in the the fifth!

>
> GIRLS
> Under 10: Amy Huang (FL) d. Katlin Zhang (PV)
> Under 12: Amy Huang (FL) d. Linden Li (PV)

Yep, Amy's good!

> Under 14: Atha Fong (CA) d. Rita Wu (PV)

Atha's backhand loop was hot this tournament. Most of the other top junior
girls were using pips on the backhand and hitting & pushing.

> Under 16: Barbara Wei (PV) d. Jennifer Mast (OH)

Jennifer had upset Sarah Zheng in the semifinals. She would upset her twice
this tournament - she seemed the most comfortable against Sarah's backhand
medium pips.

> Under 18: Katherine Wu (PV) d. Atha Fong (CA)

This was a struggle for Katherine. Katherine led throughout the match, but
Atha kept coming back. Katherine was up 9-4 in the first - and lost! She won
the next two, and led 10-8 match point in the fourth - and lost! Atha went
up 6-2 in the fifth and final game, but Katherine then ran it out, I think
right to 10-6! Then Atha got three in a row to 10-9! But Katherine finally
pulled it out, 11-9 in the fifth. This would have been a huge upset, as Atha
is around 1800 to Katherine's 2155.

All MDTTC!

> Under 12: PV d. FL
> Under 14: NY d. FL

This event was MDTTCs biggest disappointment. In the semifinals, MDTTC had
players rated 2001, 1631, 1484 and 1407. Facing them were two NY players
rated 1234 and 1220. Both were actually around 1600. Yao (the 2001 player)
won his match, although he struggled. Max, the 1484 player who had been so
hot the day before (losing 3-2, 11-9 in the fifth, to Eric Finkelstein,
rated 2049, and almost beating Joseph Cochran, 1809), went cold, and lost
both matches, one of them 11-9 in the fifth. It was the doubles, however,
that was frustrating. Yao played with Anthony Shen, and the two won the
first two games. But they fell way behind early on in the next three games.
In game four, they were up match point, but Anthony missed a smash. NY
finally won, 3-2, and so won the match, 3-1. Yao didn't even get to play the
fifth match. It kept Yao from sweeping the Under 14 events for the second
year in a row. I've been second-guessed over and over for playing Anthony in
the doubles (he's the 1407 player), but Yao actually wanted him for his
doubles partner, as he had not done well he said in practice with Duncan
Chou (the 1631), and Max wasn't playing well at the time. This event kept
Yao from joining Mark Hazinski, Katherine Wu and Peter Li as players who
swept their age group events.

> Under 16: MD d. NJ

Michael Shao was the star, winning both singles matches (Pan Lin and Eric
Finkelstein, plus doubles with Khaleel). His win over 2238 Pan Lin was
spectacular.

> Under 18: IN d. CA
> Under 22: OH d. PV
>
> GIRLS
> Under 10: PV d. FL

Amy Huang was playing in a higher division, so Florida wasn't at full
strength.

> Under 12: PV d. CA
> Under 14: PV d. FL

This has been an annual rivally, with our Barbara Wei and Rita Wu going
against Florida's Sarah Zheng and Diana Li. We won 3-0 this year, but expect
another battle next year. (Last year we won 3-2 when Barbara defeated Sarah
in the final match, after losing to her both times they had played earlier.)

Besides winning Under 14 Boys' Singles in both Junior Olympics and Junior
Nationals, as well as Under 14 Boys' Doubles, Yao also won the Joel Farrell
Sportsmanship award, given to the player who best exemplifies high level
play and sportsmanship.

Good commentary, Larry. I want to add in the u-16 boys team finals,
when Pan lost to Michael I was up 2-1 vs Khaleel. Last year the same
thing hapened only it was 1-1 in games vs Charles Fan. With me and
Charles we played out and I did win (in a match that became purely for
fun), but with Khaleel we decided we'd finish it next time. Oh yea
when I lost to Pan in the u-16 junior nationals I was leading 2-0 in
games.

PS - The last time I played Khaleel was at the Eastern Open where I
was up 9-8 in the fifth before losing :/

Congrats on winning all those medals, lil e.

It must be kinda hard to concentrate on your matches now --- being a real life
celeb and stuff like that --- getting your bio and mugshot in the mag and
e-zine rocks.

Eric is god !!!

PS - Let me ask you a question, nowadays, how to you handle the horde (sp) of
group-eees? Aren't they kinda disacting?

I honestly can't think of a single penholder among the 137 players! None of
our 37 players were penholders, and I don't think I coached against any
penholders. Hard to believe, isn't it? (Yet the tournament was run by
Richard Lee, who dominated his age group for years as a penholder.)

Since I have so much free time due to my "half-time job" (and because I work
mornings, afternoons, nights and weekends....), I've been able to update the
MDTTC web page and put up the results of our 37 junior players at the Junior
Olympics! We're pretty proud of them!

No penholders? Heavens to Richard Lee! How many defenders, other
than perhaps Seemiller protege 1810-rated Gordon Cochran, were among
the participants? How many hardbatters? Did Steve Berger coached
hardbat junior phenom Jake Carter choose to use a Hock or MacClone
against America's best and brightest junior pongers?

In general, how did kids who aren't speed gluer Spalbirds from the
Planet Mendo do?

I played a chopper from Ohio who used long pips on the backhand there.
However, he was several levels below Gordy (who I also played).

In Junior Olympics, you can only play your age group, and so Mark Hazinski
won Under 18, but didn't play Under 22. In Junior Nationals, you can play up
to three age groups, and in that, Mark won Under 18 and Under 22.
