Does anyone here know what kind of sponge Liu Guoliang has underneath his
R.I.T.C. 802 pips-out rubber -- type, thickness, hardness, color? If I had
to guess, I'd say: type: R.I.T.C. HRS sponge, thickness: 2.25 mm, hardness:
35° ą 2°, color: white or cream; but does anyone here really know any of
these four parameters?

Wow, 35 would be very soft sponge, would it not?

Dave, it would be, if weren't for the fact that it's used in conjunction
with short pips-out rubber. Check out www.tsp-yamato.com/html/fr.html.There
you'll find for standard MD (Most Deficient) Spin-pips a hardness of 35° ą
3°. It has the same sponge as the banned Spin-pips, with which Liu Guoliang
won gold at the '96 Olympics and later a men's singles world
championship --unfortunately J. Rufford Harrison made TSP space out the pips
(completely arbitrarily), and prodded them into renaming their Gold Medal
rubber -- which they did by prefixing it with MD for "Mad Devil" in honor of
Mr. Harrison. But don't just think he's prejudiced against Liu. I think he
hates all successful pips-out penholder players. He did the same to Jiang
Jialiang's PF4-652 and Xie Saike's PF4-651. They weren't renamed; they just
reappeared in "baggy suits." Anyway they really gave Liu the double whammy.
They took the spin out of his pips and the spin out of his ball (38mm to
40mm) at the same time. Study www.ritc-729.com/eindex.htm, and you'll notice
that they combine their softest and thickest sponges with pips-out rubber.
By the way, do you know whether or not Rufford is still living?

Waqidi, then check out www.andro.de/en/belaege.html the pips-out Logo has
H30°. Or, look at www.tsp-yamato/html/fr.html. There one finds MD
Spin-pips -- H35° ±3°; even softer is the MD Spin-pips with 21 Sponge --
H32° ±3°.

I was aware that there were some sponges available with a hardness of 30.
Most of my experience is with inverted. Even the 38 hardness we are trying
on the new ASTI test rubbers seem soft to me. Of course I am not a soft
sponge player.
