We would advise prospective candidates to discuss exam preparation with their Educational Supervisors as early as possible to identify and act on any relevant educational needs. For example, if you have had less undergraduate experience in certain clinical areas, or are unsure about evidence and data interpretation then plan with others how you can best address this. If you are unsure about whether you are ready to sit the AKT, or think you might require a reasonable adjustment, it is important to discuss this with a member of your GP Education team in good time so that you can submit all necessary applications and information to the RCGP as per the timeframes outlined below.

For example, your long-term goal might be to complete all of your GED exams. This could take several years of going to school and studying. Going to class next month might be a short-term goal. Or passing an important test can be another short-term goal. Achieving these short-term goals helps you reach your long-term goal.

Sometime it takes many steps to complete a long-term goal. These smaller steps can be your long-term goals [45.1.2.21]. For example, your long-term goal might be to complete all of your GED exams. This could take several years of going to school and studying. Going to class next month might be a long-term goal. Or passing an important test can be another long-term goal. Achieving these long-term goals helps you reach your long-term goal.

This chapter is vaguely relevant to parts from Section B(v) of the 2017 CICM Primary Syllabus, which expects the exam candidate to "explain the concepts of intravenous bolus and infusion kinetics". Loading doses and maintenance doses have some practical relevance to these concepts, and the design of a dosing regimen requires some understanding of them. However, neither the new 2017 syllabus nor the old 2014 syllabus included anything specific about dose calculations in their list of learning objectives or expected abilities. It therefore seemed all the more unfair when Question 10 from the first paper of 2009 asked the candidates to "describe the calculations involved in determining the loading dose and maintenance dose for an intravenous infusion". The pass rate was 30%; "main points for a pass included the equations for determining the loading and maintenance doses." To address this injustice, this chapter will present those equations up front before degenerating into characteristic gibberish.
