After the European Championships, I'm wondering if I am the only person
who find that J.M Saive isn't fair play and that he has no respect for
his adversary as he is always shouting even he 'steals' points (i.e
corner balls).

I'm wondering if there is no rule about the behaviour of a player, I
mean I can understand enthousiasm as long as it is done with respect to
the adversary.

I have been at the junior french championships and I have been annoyed
to see that young players tend to copy this kind of behaviour.

Some friends of mine who made some training in China told me that
chinese trainers were encouraging young players to shout.

IMHO, it doesn't give a good image of our sport.

If you saw the Primorac-Waldner upset, Primorac was shouting too. And good
for Waldner, he looked calm throughout the match. I guess yelling shakes
off nervousness and builds up confidence, but it is disrespectful toward
your opponent IMHO.

I was wondering how you were able to see that match? Was it on TV?

It has been my observation that players who display this behavior are usually
more erratic, and easier to manipulate in matches. Things seem to go "bad" for
them very easily, especially if you "help" them by playing at the wrong tempo
for their tantrums.

In an interview JM. Saive told us that he learned the technique of shouting
"Tcho" from a Chinese coach corroborating your suspicion.
When playing myself I occasionally have a shout. It seems that it
keeps the adrenaline flowing, and heightens the concentration.
This of course is only useful if you have an agressive playing style
to go with it. Waldner for instance isn't a very aggresive player,
but when he plays a Chinese player he also plays very short to the table
and very fasti, and this without shouting.

I think fighting for every point does give a good image to our sport.
One should however make a difference between an enthousiastic shout
and a downright intimidation of your adversary. I think the former applies
to JM. Saive's playing style.

Greetings

:Jean-Michel saive is - like he says himself - a fighter. Het has not the talent like Waldner. Saive has to train a lot more than other players. In the match he has to be concentrated 100% and has to fight for every point. Thats just his way of playing.
He is in no way unsportive. When he shouts something like 'ja!' after he won a point it's to motivate himself.
He is not unsportive at all. I went to the final Belgium-Sweden last tuesday and like all the other times, when the empire makes a mistake, he corrects is even if it is in his disadvantage .
If he would be unsportive, the other players sure wouldn't have elected him to be the chairman of the players union !
