I'm interested in finding out about teams or clubs in Delaware,
(ie. Newark area) or Maryland around Northeast or Perryville.
Either "Y" or USS is fine. What kind of practices, ages, fees,
etc.

I know of a club that is about thirty minutes away from
Northeast. The of the team is Bowie Aquatic Club. I believe
that our coach is one of the best in the country. He has
had many qualify for Junior and Senior Nationals, including
Jeff Weiss, who is ranked 5th in the country in the 200 breaststroke.
He is a tough coach, but if you follow his program, you will
most definitely succeed. I'm not sure about the fees for
any of the other groups besides the senior group. The cost
for the senior group is $100/month. However, I believe that
it is well worth it. In addition to swimming, Coach Mason
provides weight workouts for his senior swimmers. The
senior group trains from 5:15-6:45 AM on Monday, Tuesday,
Thursday, and Friday, and from 4:30-7:00 PM on Monday and
Thursday. On Tuesday and Friday, the senior practices run
from 4:30-7:30, as the last half-hour is devoted to
weight training. On Saturday, practice is from 6-9 AM.

As you can see, our team will give you plenty of training.
Coach Mason's number is (301) 249-5073. He can tell you
about the fees and training for the other practice groups.

Coach Mason's program is the toughest around and therefore
there is plenty of lane space as opposed to easier teams where
the lanes are so crowded that its ridiculous.

Well, good luck. Let me know when you make a decision.

As for Bowie Aquatic Club, I don't know how fast the original poster
drives, but Bowie is at least 40 minutes from the northern end of
Baltimore County, and North East is at least 30 minutes from there. If
you wanted to look that far away for a club, you could look at North
Baltimore Aquatic Club in Towson or Retrievers in Catonsville. Both of
these are at least an hour from North East/ Perryville but are much
closer IMO than Bowie. Also, if you're coming from Perryville, remember
that you're looking at at least 4 bucks in tolls per trip to get to bowie
(the tydings bridge and the harbor tunnels.)
Don't get me wrong: John Mason is a good coach, but I'm not sure if
anyone is worth that much of a commute.

Marty-

I swam for `Coach' Mason for many years and while I too did well and went on to swim in DIV I, I don't think you'll want to make the very long trip from NORTHEAST MD to Bowie. Last time I checked there was a Northeast YMCA and they had a small team. As for DEL, I encountered only Wilmington YMCA during my age group years so I can't help you anymore there.
Dave Streight

Gianpaolo-
I assume as you speak so highly of `Coach` Mason that you either swim for him or have children that swim for him (you age is tough to discern in this binary media). Next time you get a chance, see how many male swimmers would praise him as highly. Don't think you'll find too many. Next time you see my absolute favorite coach...say hello for me. He'll remember me. I still have the pull tube I through back at him during one of my last workouts with his 'team'...

One of the strongest programs in the Middle Atlantic Region is the
Delaware Swim Team (DST). They practice at the Delaware Swim Center in
New Castle, De, and also at a satellite facility in Hockessin, DE. There
are several swimmers on DST from Cecil County, MD so although the drive
is probably 30-40 minutes, at least you should be able to car pool. I don't
have the number here, but you should be able to get it from information.

There are several good teams in Delaware. It depends on what you are
looking for and at what level you want your child to swim. DST is LARGE
probably in excess of 200 swimmers and is run by what appears to be an
astute business man. Team Delaware is also very good. They always seem
to have several top dogs in the area. The Western YMCA on Kirkwood Hway
has a coach that has been an all-American and seems to be doing well as he
also several swimmers on top in Delaware. There is also the YWCA Nomads
in Newark. There is the Cecil County Y. There is a new Del Brandywine
Swim Club - personally I can't stand the coach but alot of people like him
and have left other clubs for his. Perhaps the best $ deal in Delaware is
the Elsmere Boys/Girls Club Pirahnas. They are going through a coaching
changes but they are consistently about 2/3 to 1/2 of what any of the
others mentioned here are.

Good Luck on you decision. Remeber, its for your child and swimming is a
lifetime sport. The goal is to enjoy it and hopefully do well.

This was my 2 cents.

Just out of curosity -- what do you pay in Delware. My daughter is in
age group swimming in Sugar Land, TX (a part of Houston). We pay $40/mo
for 3 days swimming - - -for Bronze or lowest level group. I think the
price is as high as $60 for Senior group.

Depends on the program. Ranges from about 175 for Late September through
early march to about 90/mo for elite swimmers in the largest program. On
average, I think a 3 day/week program is in the 250 to 300 range for the
season - sept to march.
