Does anybody have tried the microfiber reduction massage at Somax clinics.
I would like to know more details and opinions about this massage.
At the Somax web site they inform that it "imporves flexibility far beyond
what stretching alone can do." Is that true ?
Ref: www.somaxsports.com

Thanks, Leandro Barbosa.

I had a quick glance at it. (very quick)
In my SMT days, there was another term for a massage technique which does
the same. It's called Friction, and it's very painful. It too breaks down
scar tissue (but causes a lesser amount than it eliminates) In the case of
Friction, it is to deal with scar tissue, resulting from an injury, or done
as a deliberate injury ignored to alter an anatomical structure.
There is an element of truth in saying that scar tissue inhibits muscular
efficiency.
In the case of scar tissue which has resulted from a single injury, if the
body was allowed to over-compensates in it's inflammatory response, (i.e. no
ice applied etc) creating a collagen *blob* over many more of the uninjured
muscle fibres/filaments. It forms scar tissue, which, in effect, imprisons
all that area, causing only the part of the muscle which has escaped to do
all the work. Scar tissue is so strong, that it could support your weight
several times over.
However, in regards to micro-scars, which may occur during exercise. These
are separated scars and therefore do not have the same effect.
Remember, Friction also creates micro-scars, so I do not know how they've
got around that one.
Or to what extent the ordinary athlete need worry about such things....
I think I find there's a scent of money in the air :)

Maybe. Certainly the scar tissue thing is familiar to anyone who has had a
severe injury. There presentation is very logical. However, I have never seen
any explanation of how to do this for say the regular splits or whatever; plus,
I would think that you would have to be darned strong to massage certain areas.
I have seen no research either. If someone presents a research where people
get splits faster with massage versus standard techniques, then I will be most
interested. Until then I put the site information into the category of
"puffing ones wares".

Massage does not just mean rubbing the skin and connective tissue.
It can also involve the manipulation of connective tissue.
That means that certain techniques can be employed which provide an element
of stretch. Compression, would be one such technique.
It's a matter of targeting golgi-tendon organs with precise timing, and so
forth.
As for "been darned strong to massage certain areas", that is a regular
assumption, but it is relatively false. Technique also gets around such
issues. I've know short, weak looking, waif-like women, who can impart
enough effect through the use of technique, that one would be convinced they
could break one's bones effortlessly.
I would agree with the "puffing ones wares".

Anyone interested in our Microfiber Reduction program should look at the many before and after photos of our clients and read what they have to say at http://www.somaxsports.com/clients.php There is also a short video that shows an initial first session where our athlete improves his hamstring range 45 degrees at the top of www.somaxsports.com Also, our program is nothing like the other program mentioned above, otherwise their athlete would have won 44 Gold Medals and set 11 World Records as ours have done.
