She was an Olympic gold and bronze medallist in Munich in 1972 in
breaststroke.
She died at the age of 42 after a week long illness with flu.
She was living in Wollongong on the South East Coast of the state of
New South Wales in Australia, an industrial steel making city about 80
kilometres (50 miles) from Sydney. It can probably be compared to the
steel making town of Allentown in the USA in terms of its depressed
labour market.
Her funeral was attended by Australian swimming legend Dawn Fraser.
