In 1992 Olympics, the TV coverage reported that Martin Zubero (grew up and
swam in US, but has dual citizenship due to his parents, and represented
Spain) never won a single race in high school (Southern California?). I
wish I had a copy of the picture they showed of him - gangly arms, knobby
knees and elbows.
Of course, in 92, Zubero became the first Spanish swimmer to win a Gold medal.
Biondi, so the story goes, didn't start swimming competitively until he was 15.
There are probably lots of other cases, too. Anyone else know of any?

U. of Florida)
Jim Christian

Marianne Limpert (sp?) a silver medalist for Canada at Atlanta started
competative swimming at 14.

Rowdy Gaines started swimming competitively in his junior year of high school.
