Have any past or present Olympic Swimmers not gotten Jr. National cuts
until late in their careers and then suddenly come on strong? I have a 17
year old son who after struggling with growing VERY tall and a bout with
mono just got his first Jr. National cuts. I was surprised to hear that
he actually has dreams of international competition. Isn't it way too
late? His coach says he is not even close to peaking yet.

In 1992 Olympics, the TV coverage reported that Martin Zubero (grew up and
swam in US, but has dual citizenship due to his parents, and represented
Spain) never won a single race in high school (Southern California?). I
wish I had a copy of the picture they showed of him - gangly arms, knobby
knees and elbows.

Of course, in 92, Zubero became the first Spanish swimmer to win a Gold medal.

Biondi, so the story goes, didn't start swimming competitively until he was 15.

There are probably lots of other cases, too. Anyone else know of any?

Actually, Martin (and his brother David) went to Highschool and college
in Florida...The Bolles School (also Trina Jackson's club team) and the
U. of Florida)

Rowdy Gaines started swimming competitively in his junior year of high school.
