JULY 1997
WORLD NUMBER ONE JOINS DUNLOP
The world's number one female squash player Sarah Fitz-Gerald, has teamed up
with the world's number one manufacturer of squash equipment Dunlop, in a
major sponsorship deal.
Sarah first came to international notice as a 19-year-old when she won the
World Junior Championship and from that moment set her sights on becoming
the world's best at senior level.
Victories in the Canadian Pacific RIM, the Monaco Invitation, the Adelaide
City Open, the Denmark Open and the Victoria Open, as well as a semi-final
place in the World Open, confirmed sarah's high promise before disaster
struck in April 1991 when she suffered a serious injury in training.
Away from the circuit for 14 months, Sarah's ranking dropped to No.18, but
she returned to the scene in dramatic fashion when she won the Japan Open in
1992, the first of four major titles she won that year.
Further successes followed as her rehabilitation continued and in 1995, she
came within an ace of being the first world junior champion to win the
senior title.
Twelve months later, Sarah achieved her dream with a level of dominance not
seen since the days of Heather McKay. She powered through the championship
with an attacking game which meant that not only did she not drop a game,
but her longest match was only 32 minutes.
Away from the court, Sarah has served as an energetic chairwoman of the
Women's International Squash Players Association (WISPA) since 1992, and in
that capacity has brought in more than #1,000,000 in sponsorship deals for
the women's game, securing financial security for the Women's Association
for years to come.
Sarah is a well-known figure in the Far East where she engineered the deal
for the JSM Open in Japan, a direct result of which was for the Men's
circuit to also visit Japan! Sarah plays regular league and tournament
events in England, France, Germany and the USA.
Sarah is contracted to Dunlop for rackets, clothing, strings, grips and
equipment luggage.
