Fans. Can't we do something about this guy? He's been doing soccer for
at least THIRTEEN YEARS (the first time I heard him was the '86 World
Cup.) He still doesn't have the remotest idea what the game is about. He
still uses nothing but hockey terminology. He still has no idea what a
foul is. He still never learns more than the names of one team's worth
players (last night, Brazil.) He makes about ten serious mistakes a
half and never corrects himself.

GET HIM OFF THE AIR ESPN!!!!!!!!!!
PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cmon, he's not that bad. Ever heard Gordon Bradley commentate? His comments
are usually wrong.

JPDC has improved from the days when he didn't know
that a ball crossing the plane of the goal-line
(e.g., on a corner kick) is out of bounds, or that
an in-bounds ball near the side-line can be played
by a player out-of-bounds.

Next learning assignment for JPDC: an indirect free kick
is signalled by a raised arm from the referee, and a goal
cannot be scored directly from an indirect free kick.
Often JPDC fails to identify indirect free kicks as such.

The only negative to the WWC has been the poor quality
of the officiating, and the failure of the ESPN/ABC
broadcasters to observe referee faults.

Too many of these amateur referees look like the proverbial
deer frozen in the headlights, appear nervous and overwhelmed
by the large stadium crowds. In particular, the Danish referee
was clueless as Nigeria brutalized the U.S. with twenty plus
rough, flagrant fouls.

JPDC correctly wondered if the referee for the Brasil - Nigeria
game was aware of the time late in stoppage time.

The ESPN/ABC technical direction has also improved, though traces
of familiar faults still remain: mis-directed close-ups of players,
coaches, even fans ! when there is significant action developing;
no goal-line camera to show if the ball has crossed the goal-line
(missing for a potentially decisive Brasil goal late in yesterday's
quarterfinal vs. Nigeria), erratic off-side camera ...

Basic TV direction rules for big-time international football:

(1) STAY WITH THE PLAY until there is an obvious pause
(e.g., ball out of bounds) or interruption (e.g., injured player)
in the game, then take all the on-field and off-field close-ups
and tangential shots;

(2) STAY WIDE (camera 1) unless there is some tight action near
a side-line or goal-line camera.

Thank you.

And who would you rather listen too? Okay sure I'd like to have Tommy Smyth and
Mike Hill commentating, but I'll take JP over Phil, Ty, or Derek anytime!!!!!

you want to hear something funny?

i wish i could still quote it and point you to it, but
www.USAWomensWorldCup99.com had a commentary up yesterday where they
praised JP for his knowledge and insight into the women's game, and
ripped ABC for assigning Bob Lei (sic) to cover the opening match.

i about busted a gut when i read that.

I thought the ref for the U.S. - Nigeria game was Swiss, Petignat(sp?)
or something. She was probably too neutral.

You know, i swear this is true, the other night i happened to watch a little
bit of the tampa bay game and heard ty keough say "Valderramma is arguably the
best midfielder in the world"....he said this and was serious about it.

now that is scary.

Look at who he's been teamed up with, though. Wendy Gebaur shouldn't
give up her day job, IMO (and what the hell's the deal with her
"restraining lines" and "upper 90s"? I *hate* it when soccer
commentators can't/won't use the correct terminology). I've personally
found JP to be at his best when Seamus Malin's doing the color
commentary.

At least we don't have to put up with Bob Neal and Mick Luckhurst ('90
WC)....

"And scoring goals is important."

- one of the ESPN announcers when commenting on one team's abilities to
score goals during the second or third game in the WWC.

I'm not familiar with the names of the ESPN announcers, so unfortunately
I can't tell you who this quote came from. Sorry.

I've been saying this for years, I guess most of the US fans weren't into
soccer yet, and didn't have the 'honor' of listening to these idiots. BTW Rick
Davis did some matches on TNT that WC also.

I've also been wondering what is the 8 yard box she keeps refering to the last
several games(unless I missed a rule change).Wonder why Malin has been banished
from the US games? Any chance it is because he did not pull many punches
regarding the US men's preformance in France??

seamus got teamed with the one play-by-play woman in this tournament,
can't remember her name.

i think ESPN was trying to go the PC route and put as many women on this
tournament as they could. thankfully, they apparently banished the woman
they had in the studio.

Holly Rowe. She was abysmal, and I think Seamus was there to try to help
her when she made particluarly bad mistakes.

As well as Ms. Rowe. I'm sure Bob Ley will do the final.

Listening to the one game Holly Rowe did, I sometimes closed my eyes and
thought I was listening to the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. I
expected to hear Alan Thicke at any moment.
