What are the duties of a captain of a football side, on and off the
field? Or the title is akin to a British Monarch as suggested in the
Grant Wahl's book excerpted in the Sports Illustrated? Thanks in advance.

As well as the tough job of getting to call heads or tails at the start
of a match. A Captain is the one that gets to lift the trophy, if his
team actually wins anything. Oh and he also gets to wear a snazzy
armband, in any colour that doesn't clash with his team's kit. (But red
with a white circle and a black motif in it, haven't been very
fashionable as armbands for the past 60 odd years.) Can't think of much
else that he does that is of any relevance...
