Send them emails to postm...@tamu.edu and maybe he'll stop his
spam-flooding of ths newsgroup and alt.sports.soccer.european.

I am the Paul in question. This temper tantrum is part of a flame war
Mr. Smith is carrying on against me. I am a fan of the world cup
soccer tournament, and have posted messages for the most part to
rec.sport.football.college and RSFC only, razzing them about 'real'
football. For reasons known only to him, he has crossposted those
messages to the above groups and even rec.sport.table.soccer. I have
since killfiled him.

On behalf of his miserable arse, I apologize to you who choose
rec.sport.soccer for actual soccer stuff and not Mr. Smith's
horseshit. I'd suggest mail-filtering El Boob's same tired 8-word
message into oblivion while you're at it.

He's ticked at a certain Paul Hamlin.
I and a great number of the RSS redership are simply
mystified.
BTW, contrary to a suggestion previously offered in this
newsgroup, sending mail to postm...@tamu.edu does not
elicit the once standard response of "we'll look
into it and if merited rap said moron on the knuckles."
Rather you are directed to a web page that allows you to
reconstruct the reason for your complaint.
An example of over zealous use of the Web IMHO when
a perfectly acceptable form of communication already exists.
Anyway, should Tony or anyone else feed the need
to ride herd on this particular Aggie the web address
for formal complaints regarding network problems
such as abuse is:
<http://cis.tamu.edu/~qapcm/ComplaintForm/>

You may also wish to confirm his address by using the
tamu.edu service at:
<http://www.tamu.edu/cgi/ph/cso_ph.cgi>
Given El Goob's (Boy, aren't you really sad that
you didn't think of this net-handle before Gary?)
propensity for falsifying header info.

Oh, yes, I took this reply solely back into
rec.sport.soccer,
guess that means I "un-fixed" El Goob's headers.

Paul, I misnamed you in an earlier post directed solely to RSS.
Sorry about that.
Still, I have a bone to pick with you.
These cross-posts you describe are directed at you, and you alone.
All they do for the rest of the world is eat up connection time.
In my view it is your responsibility to deal with the situation.
One simple suggestion, take it to E-Mail with El Goob,
sort out the enmity, reach a peace and stop this stupid
nonsense.
Furthermore, stop suggesting that a friendly email to
postm...@tamu.edu will do the trick, it won't. I've
got to believe your repetition of such poor advice
means you haven't even tried your own suggestion.
Also, you openly admit that you make a habit of "razzing"
the readers of RSFC about football. When an RSFC'er
strays across the path to "razz" folks on RSS it only
results in a desultory trail of ill-informed accusations
and equally ill-tempered counter-charges.
My guess is that your antics on RSFC result in exactly
the same scenario most of the time.
You wish to apologize, on behalf of his miserable arse!!
Geez, what ***!ing nerve you've got. Regular balls of steel.
Be a man and deal with the problem you created through
your own actions.

Oh yeah, BTW

You sure couldn't tell from your posts. With only one exception that
I'm aware of, all of your soccer-related posts to RSS have been cross-
posted bait to RSFC. You're trolling, Paul. Period. Can the "I'm a
soccer fan, too" pose.

Do we really need to go through all the cross-posted (between RSS and RSFC)
bait you've posted, Paul?

I didn't think so.

> razzing them about 'real'
> football. For reasons known only to him, he has crossposted those

For anyone who's reading this, and cares . . .

I would guess that about 80-90% of the threads in RSS filled with anti-soccer
vitriol from RSFC regulars are the responsibility of Paul. Since the Cup
started, he's entertained the hell out of himself by posting articles about
soccer in RSFC, cross-posting them back to RSS. Almost all of these anti-
soccer posts you see showing up in RSS (Antmatic being a notable exception)
start as responses to Paul Hanlin's successful attempts to start cross-posted
flame wars.

When it was recently pointed out to Paul that he couldn't be much of a
soccer fan, since he was polluting up RSS at the same time as RSFC, he
said "you're right," and then proceeded to *continue* to post about
soccer to RSFC -- he just didn't cross-post to RSS anymore. And so
regulars in RSFC "retaliate" by posting anti-soccer stuff in RSS, and the
beat goes on.

Regardless of what Goob does or doesn't do, it's a fair bet that as long
as Paul Hanlin continues to troll RSFC with soccer posts, people in RSFC
are going to respond by posting anti-soccer stuff here in RSS.

>headers" posts about?

It all started with Paul Hanlin Jr who is an unpopular trolling
crossposting idiot of long standing in rec.sport.football.college
(RSFC). When the World Cup started, Hanlin started posting pro-soccer
anti-gridiron trolls to RSFC. He would sometimes also crosspost them
to the soccer and pro wrestling groups -- don't ask me why.

Now Hanlin isn't even much of a soccer fan, and had never posted a
message to RSS that wasn't also crossposted. I think he got
interested in soccer through playing video games or possibly through
the US women's team as he has quite the fetish for female athletes.

Anyway, Gary W. Smith (aka El Goob, Goober, or just the Goob) is a
computer geek grad student at Texas A&M University, a noted
personality in RSFC, and another trolling crossposting idiot of long
standing. Except a good number of RSFC people think he's cool and
funny.

Well Goob got fed up with Paul's pro-soccer trolling of RSFC so he has
"retaliated" by replying to every message Paul posts to RSFC and
adding RSS to the newsgroups header. I expect he's written some sort
of automated response bot to do this.

Now Goob doesn't seem to care that all this has nothing to do with
RSS, and that his crossposting these replies to here doesn't bother
Hanlin one bit. Goob is about as big an asshole as one can find on
Usenet, and I'm not sure if there's any way to get through to him.
And I have tried.

I admit I'm stumped as to what the best course of action is. We could
just ignore the crossposts and hope the problem eventually goes away
(and killfile if you can). But Hanlin seems quite content to keep
posting to RSFC, and Goob seems quite content to keep sending these
crossposted replies.

Or we could organise a mass counter-strike and then deliver an
ultimatimum to Goob to knock it off or else each of his crossposts
will get replied back to RSFC (and only RSFC) many many times over.

Or we could all try complaining to the Texas A&M news admin about
these nuisance crossposts, but I have this sinking feeling that Goob
may be in pretty good with sys admins there, and may even be one
himself.

Any other ideas?

Troubled and annoyed,

Let me first state that this ongoing online brawl between
Hanlin and El Goob is about the most boring damned thing
I have seen on RSS. Both adversaries are evidently void of
a clear moral compass.

What is also particularly egregious here is that Paul gives us
this wonderful sage advice, it just so happens to be wrong,
completely and utterly wrong.
1 -- Texas A&M doesn't operate its complaint procedures in the
fashion Paul would have you believe. All complaints are recorded
through a web interface, sending a note to postm...@tamu.edu
will generate an auto-reply in which the reader is directed
to the relevant URL.
<http://cis.tamu.edu/~qapcm/ComplaintForm/>

Consider the implications of this redirection to a web form.
It means that Paul hasn't even taken the time to register
a complaint using the method he suggests. Had he done so his
advice to RSS would correctly direct individuals to the relevant
URL.

One must conclude that Paul doesn't give a rat's ass
about the problem he has helped create.

Yeah, and you've got to love how he apologizes,,
not for his behavior which caussed the redundant
auto-replies from Gary W.Smith, but rather for his
adversaries behavior. As I said elsewhere, balls of steel.

Which he elsewhere admits to ussing as a vehicle for
deriding American Football, sounds exactly like the kind of
ignorant "Soccer is Useless" crap which RSS readers find
offensive.
You've got to believe his works get a similar reception in
RSFC, and you cannot blame their readers for jumping all
over his posts, the same way one can sympathize with
retributive posts from RSS readers to "Soccer is
<Fill in Your Expletetive Here> posts.
Goob Auto-replies are of course an entirely different
matter, they are simply a nuisance -- and a particularly
univentive one.

Pot, kettle, black. Look, I fixed your logic map for you Paul.
For reasons best known to himself Paul has made a habit of
posting irrelevant garbage making derisive comparisons of American
Football in the context of soccer solely to RSFC.

Which bring up the other reason why I find Paul's plea for RSS
(or RSFC?) readers to come to the aid of his benighted party
completely withouut merit.
2 -- It is within the power of Paul Hanlin to halt this flow of
time wasting nonsense himself by:

A -- Not posting more troll bait to RSFC.
B -- Taking action to communicate with his adversary in this
affair via personal email. Said communication to ask for a
stop, backed by the pledge to halt RSFC baiting.
C -- If B doesn't work or remains unresolved then take
the _correct_ steps to communicate with tamu.edu to
mediate a compromise, stop the auto-repliess or otherwise
bring this stupidity to an end.
In case Paul missed it the first time the way to do this is
through:

Actually, Gary isn't a graduate student, not at least according

I doubt its very sophisticated, changing the headers is
childs play, adding the perfunctory statement at the end
is just one more .sig file alternative to juggle,
and auto-reply functions are built into many Unix
newsreaders, or can be externally scripted.
[About as challenging a task as writing a macro in Excel
or Word for those without Unix experience.]
Frankly, I'd have expected something a little more inventive
from an Assistant Lecturer in Computer Science at one of
the nation's prestigious engineering schools.

The absolute same can unfortunately be said for Hanlin
based on his vacuous apologias on behalf of all except himself.

Well, I'm not sure what the rules are for earthlink.net
but as far as it goes with G. W. Smith of tamu.edu the correct
place to register a complaint seems to be:
<http://cis.tamu.edu/~qapcm/ComplaintForm/>
In all likelihood a commercial service will have even stricter
rules regarding abuse of newsgroups and the like. Unfortunately,
in this instance the offending party is G. W. Smith. Hanlin
can claim that his posts, however misguided and dim-witted,
are within the bounds of observed behavior on usenet.

Sadly, kill-filing is the best way to go if you can do it.
Alternatively Hanlin takes the best weapon to stem
this flow and uses it.
That weapon is his silence in RSFC.

Agreed. However these turds probably won't appreciate your advice on how
to settle their dispute. That's why they're turds. They should both just
piss off.

He's an assistant lecturer, sort of, but is still doing his PhD. I've
been to his home page. He's also butt-ugly.

>His behavior doesn't marry with such a mature description.

The man calls himself Goober. Mature is not a word I would use in the
same sentence. And his Dejanews Usenet history is both long and
grotesque. Mostly stupid one-liners and nuisance posts. He has
massively trolled several other groups, notably alt.fan.kate-winslet
(or whatever it's called), and the Olympics group. He even had some
ridiculous number of messages posted to RSFC (his own group!) which
were automated reponses saying there were too many messages in the
group and asking people to stop posting!

I think he's a genetic experiment gone bad.

Hanlin isn't doing much of anything wrong at the moment. He's pretty
much stopped crossposting, and now it's just the occasional troll.
Goober is cross-post replying to all of Hanlin's messages.

I guess the complaint form couldn't hurt. It also wouldn't be too
hard to find the email address of his thesis supervisor and the head
of the comp sci department. If they got enough complaints in their
mailbox about how Goob is using their department's resources to flood
RSS with automated nuisance crossposts then that might prove
effective.

A newsgroup he's posted to steadily since he got online around 1995.
Fat chance. Of course if someone wants to go to Hanlin's home and
bust his arms, that might stop him posting. His home address is
listed on the Internet Whitepages. IIRC he's 6'2" though. Goob would
be an easier target -- he's a little 5'7" wimp. :-)

The frightning thing about it is that he seems to be married with two
children.

Hey, what's your dad doing ?
Well, he's a troll on alt.fan.kate-winslet !

I can assure, he's been online much longer than that. When I first discovered
rec.sport.football.college in early 1990, Goob was one of the people that
helped break me of my newbie habits, like responding to every subpar piece of
bait. His online work used to be much higher quality, but now he's just like
the Rolling Stones, trotting out crap and living of their reputation that
they built 25 years ago.

Look, as the self-appointed head of the RSS Campaign to Starve the Trolls, my
advice is to ignore him and Paul Hanlin.
