Any word on whether the playoff draw will be seeded or unseeded? (And,
if it's seeded, what the criteria will be?)

This would be the proper time to announce the rules.

Yes, they will be seeded.

Point 7.07 of the regulations says:

"The eight remaining runners-up contest play-off matches.
The four ties are determined by means of a draw. The four
runners-up with the best position in the UEFA national team
coefficient ranking system are seed for the draw."

Also, thankfully it seems that UEFA restored the format for
the semifinals, with crossing over instead of keeping apart the
groups A/B and C/D until the final, as they did in 2008.

Not the first time that UEFA does things in a more circumspect
manner than FIFA.

Thanks for the info.

I don't doubt it for a second. However, I wonder whether UEFA could or
should have required FIFA to do the same regarding their own WCQ zone
playoffs? I'm not trying to blame UEFA for anything, just wondering
how these things work.

This is crap. The whole best runner up business is dumb, and there are
far too many playoffs.

With 51 teams involved they could easily do 7 groups of 8 or 7 - which
was what they did last time. (2 groups of 8, 5 groups of 7 - I think
there was only one group of 8 last time)

have they announced whether these will be seeded or not yet ?

Platini publicly stated that he was unhappy with the bigger
groups in the EURO 2008 qualifiers, so it's no surprise.
Smaller groups means less games but an increase in the
likelihood of a good team missing out - I guess in aiming to
please the top clubs, UEFA are willing to take that risk.

Yes, Montenegro is new.

Yes, they will be. See my post to Luiz above.

One of the unfortunate side effects of a footballing "scandal"
whipping up a frenzy on rss is that decent little threads like this
one which don't happen to relate to the hot topic of the day get
buried and forgotten.

In this case of this thread, Henry's handball in the France - ROI game
the other night has stopped Werner's thread from achieving its true
potential.

In the hopes of reviving this thread, could I welcome all rss'ers to
respond with the "dream" draw for their country? Or their most feared?

From a Turkey perspective:

Most winnable draw:

Croatia
Northern Ireland (I know they're on the rise so don't want to be
disrespectful but this is still winnable)
Macedonia or Belarus
Moldova
San Marino

Most Feared:

Spain - (I honestly don't think they're as good as some seem to think
but over 180 minutes of WC qualifying we didn't seem to get *any* luck
against them, so........)

Republic of Ireland - (surely too good to be in Pot 3??)

Slovenia (a Pot 4 team who qualified for the next World Cup? Shurly
shome mishtake??)

Iceland (just one of those teams we *never* seem to do well against.
Were it not for dropped points against them we would have made Italia
90!)

Luxembourg / Faroe Islands or Malta (all have "banana skin" written
all over them!)

Most potentially controversial draw:

England (although in truth I think the ill feeling since the Leeds
incident and Euro 04 qualifiers has somewhat cooled down now)

Israel (the usually warm relationship between Turkey and Israel has
become a little more frosty recently, which saddens me)

Cyprus (this has got "political incident written all over it)

Armenia

Draw with the most potential for friendship / strong away support:

Germany (nearly half the crowd would be Turkish, ala Mexico in LA)

Austria (for the same reason mentioned above!)

Macedonia (there is a Turkic community there)

Kazakhstan

Azerbaijan (who Turkey regularly trade 12 points with at the
Eurovision - "Always on my mind! Always in my Heart!")

Group I would most like to see Scotland in:

Croatia
Greece or Switzerland
Latvia
Liechtenstein
Faroe Islands

Just because it's about time we saw Scotland at a major tournament.

Indeed. Just rewards the team in the weakest group.

This is more because of bad memories than actual strength,
right?

They're the team from pot 4 that suddenly everyone
wants to avoid. They missed pot 3 by a hair.
