Football again demonstrates to the World why it's nicely tucked away in a
corner of the Paleolithic Period. How a great product like this can be
administered by a pack of gormless hamsters like FIFA, is simply beyond
belief.

The majority of the posts here moan and whinge about Henry, his indiscretion
and what penalty he should endure, but as usual, you all miss the point by
some significant distance.

The problem could have been solved and a decision made within 30 seconds, by
a TMO. The result would have been a red card and a free kick to Ireland. End
of story. But no, football again finds itself neck deep in shit, courtesy of
it's near sighted and antiquated thinking. FIFA won't change because the
collective
weight of their egos can't acknowledge how completely right other football
codes
get it.

Thierry Henry played his cards and won the hand, don't blame him. In any
case you can watch any single match from Serie A or the Bundesliga and see
any number of cynical acts, week in, week out

What is TMO? T-Mobile?

Very much doubt that T-Mobile would have such influence.

What on earth is that? And what happens, if the match is not shown
on TV (since most of the games are not shown on TV)?

Not all. There are a few people here who support the video ref, myself
included. I just didn't say it this time, since it's mostly well
known.

Probably. But then, with video evidence I believe they would have also
granted the PK for Anelka's foul, plus the resulting red card.
Different story, same score. Maybe even a french win.
OTOH, the Chelsea - Barcelona UCL semi last year could have been a
completely different story. Like a certain Germany - Italy match too.

It would still be much better to do it just for the important games
that *are* shown on TV, than not at all.

This of course should read "for the foul on Anleka".

All top class rugby games have a video camera system, regardless of
whether they are on TV or not. It feeds the stadiums video scoreboards,
for example. In the event of a try that the ref has doubts about, or
which he was unsighted for, he asks the TMO for a ruling on whether or
not a try was scored. The TMO reviews the score from one or more video
angles, and gives the ref a decision. Takes about 30 seconds - done
deal. It would have cleared Henry's handball up in less time than that.

Correction: after seeing a video, it looks like the penalty call is
inconclusive. If that's the best video there is.

There is clearly contact, but like in most of these instances high quality
film with all the appropriate angles won't be available. Except in the case
of Henry's hand of course.
