Comment: MUCH better deal than paying anything more than 15m for
Huntelaar, or whatever silly figures Aguerro or the unproven Pato are
being quoted at.
Owen getting CRUCIFIED on the Liverpool boards.
I don't think this is an "in lieu of aforementioned strikers"
acquisition. I agree that it could prove to be a bright signing.
Barring injury, here's your man for domestic cup matches, games
against lower table EPL opponents in weeks you've also got a CL
match.....
Last week goal.com was reporting that Obama has 3 nipples.
Apparently Michael is having his medical as I write. I'm guessing that the
contract he will be offered will be related to how well he does on this, so
it is not a pass/fail situation. This is obviously a win-win for United as
everyone else has mentioned. Owen's shirt sales will easily cover his fees.
Mike Hall
I'd still take those rumours with a pinch of salt. I'm sure Manchester
United aren't THAT desperate for a player to sign, that they have to
sign Michael Owen!

Don't be dense. What has Owen proven over the past 6 years other than
he's a massive, massive choker and can't stay fit? It's a laughable
transfer and shows the state of Man United's finances.

I agree it is a surprising move by MU, however how can you say that MO
is choker? Can you show any evidence of this? He has been and probably
remains a crock, but choker no. He was treat like shit by RM even
though his goal scoring record of 18 from 41 appearances showed he had
it.

He's FREE. He's not going to be a starter. It's a World Cup year. He
knows the stakes. He'll score for them like Larsson did when he played
a couple of years ago.
There is zero downside for the Mancs.
> He's FREE. He's not going to be a starter. It's a World Cup year.
What's the World Cup got to do with anything? It should have been very
clear early into Capello's reign that he has no time for Owen. He's an
arrogant little bastard who has been given a free ride by the media for
years. 1 goal per tournament doesn't cut it. No he's not going to be a
starter but he's not going to be much use in Europe or against the top
sides. His pace has gone, his link-up play is terrible and he has long
dry spells.

Larsson who scored a grand total of 1 goal in 7 games?
> There is zero downside for the Mancs.
That's not the point. The morons in the English press linked them with
Ribery, Eto'o, Benzema, Villa which was never on the cards because
Taggart has never signed any high profile foreigners. Everyone kept
burying their heads in the sand over the clubs finances, claimed they'd
have no problems closing a deal for Tevez, while the club conveniently
talked about a policy of not signing players over 26. Signing Owen
smacks of desperation.

Except Veron, Kanchelskis, Blanc, Barthez, Stam, ... And, depending on
your definition of foreign: Keane, Cantona, Tevez, Yorke, etc (obviously
all a different category as they had played in the English league before)
Depending on your definition of high profile, there are also Blomqvist,
Jordi Cruyff, Poborsky, Schmeichel, Ronaldo, Evra, Vidic, Nani,
Anderson, Kleberson, .....

Oh, and I forgot Ruud Van Nistelrooy !

Let's not forget Berbatov.
> Oh, and I forgot Ruud Van Nistelrooy !
I wouldn't consider him a high profile signing, he wasn't a huge
worldwide star, he wasn't proven in the Champions League or in one of
the major leagues. He is exactly the type of player Ferguson signs and
has success with.

I don't recall the biggest clubs in the World breaking down the doors to
sign any of these players.

Not even close to high profile. Most of these players were unknown on
the World stage before they arrived. Most fans know who Eto'o, Villa and
Benzema are the latter largely because he has been linked with most of
Europe's elite for 2 years and not because he has done anything of note
on the World stage.

When you say high profile, I think you mean FIFA player of the year
candidates. To say Poborsky and Kleberson were low profile pre-United
is obviously nuts, but it is true that few FIFA player of the year
candidates ever come to English football let alone into Fergie's
grasping hands. The ones who do are almost invariably flops, none
being successful since the era of Gullit and Klinnsman e.g. Deco,
Shevchenko and Veron.

Yes that's one way to look at it.

Bergkamp, who would have be considered a star before he arrived given
his performances at Euro 92 and the 1994 World Cup, is one of the
exceptions.

Veron went for 15 million pounds to Parma, then 18 million to Lazio,
then 28 million to Man United. I think that qualifies as a high profile
signing in any rational person's book.
Barthez and Blanc were WC and Euro winners, and thus also fairly high
profile.
Stam cost over 10 million (a lot for a defender in 1998) and had been
Dutch player of the year before.
Van Nistelrooy had been tracked by United for years, and was expensive
and much talked about.
I don't think all (or even several) of the Biggest Clubs in the World
breaking down the doors to sign someone is most people's definition of
high profile signing. I mean, who qualifies ? Ribery right now, maybe
Benzema and Villa as well. Possibly Essien in the past.
How many clubs were seriously in for Torres two years ago ? It would
still be crazy not to call that a high profile signing.

Unknown only to VERY casual fans, in some cases. Kleberson was a world
cup winner, Evra had appeared in a CL final with Monaco, Poborsky was a
star of Euro 1996 , and as much discussed in that context as Arshavin
last year, Cruyff was a Dutch international who appeared in Euro 96
Most fans know who Eto'o, Villa and

I don't see Benzema as being fundamentally any higher profile than Van
Nistelrooy was at the time - just that there is more hype now, and more
visibility because of the expanded CL format.

Most of the players you mentioned were big stars AFTER joining United
not before.

Yep.

Of course he wasn't. Torres owes his current reputation to what he has
done in a Liverpool shirt.

They are hardly Kaka', Ronaldinho, Figo, Zidane level are they? No.

Exactly.
Signing Owen is an absolute gimme.
ManU are after a proven striker and options are limited right now.
There aren't that many high-profile strikers around (who fit your
profile, anyway), and those that do simply aren't available right now.
Owen has cost ManU zip, he's on an incentivised deal, so if he gets
injured, they wont even have to pay him much in wages.
Sure, there's a question mark over his fitness and age, but if he can
stay injury free, he's an experienced enough natural goalscorer to
bang them away regularly in a successful team.
If he doesn't work out, ManU still have their 80mill to splash on
someone a bit further down the track. Give the season til Xmas and
things will have drastically changed for some clubs and previously
unavailable players will miraculously be available.
I'm not a ManU fan, but you're letting your dislike of Owen (and ManU)
cloud your already questionable judgement
No evidence then Owen's "choking"? Thought as much.
Are you dumb or just playing dumb, or should I ask again; plain dumb?
You know very well you're in about 98% of people's killfiles,
including Bennet's, so trying to outwit him when he can't, or rather
won't read you is as transparent as the time you created a good dozen
sock puppets to troll the Scottish all the while pretending you're a
Scotsman yourself. You silly TWIT of a Canadian from English ancestry.
I'd rather pay 15m for Huntelaar. Huntelaar is currently more
productive with his best years still ahead of him. On the other hand,
you have a jaded, injury-proned pro who does seem a bit out of touch
with his constant denial of his injury and therefore fitness problems.
