I’ve downloaded Thunderbird and signed up to Eternal September but when I try to log on I get told my account can’t be found . Can anyone please advise what host name and port numbers have to be entered to connect to usenet?

Not off the top of my head, beyond checking everything is 100%
correct, which I'm sure you'd have done anyway...
