It's almost as if it's a team award with little relevance to the
quality of the player.

Bernd Dreher has 7 Bundesliga titles - only two players in history has
more! (Also 5 cups, 1 CL and 1 UEFA Cup)

Oh, so you mean the inference was that player X is bad because they have never won Y medal?

Interesting. Which players are the record holders for league titles in
various European leagues?

In Serie A it's Rosetta, Ferrari, Furino, Ferrara and Del Piero with 8
(Ferrara is listed at 7 on the wikipedia page, Del Piero at 6, but those
numbers are wrong). Buffon could join the group this year but it's quite
unlikely, as Roma will likely win the scudetto.

In England Ryan Giggs has 13 "Premier League" medals. I suspect that
nobody else comes even close even if you count all the history of
English top flight football.

In Germany (Bundesliga only) the record holders are Kahn and Scholl with 8.

In Spain, Francisco Gento has 12.

In France, five players with seven titles: Govou, Coupet, Juninho
Larque` and Revelli

Which reminds me, we have to get back to "not a mystery"

Yes, obviously there would be a lot of other representatives from ManU's
successful run of the Ferguson era.

Of non ManU players, Phil Neal would seem to be next in line with 8, but
there could be others.

What about league titles in total (allowing them to use several leagues)
? Still might be hard to beat Giggs, but some well travelled Dutchmen
might have a lot altogether from multiple leagues. Dalgish has 10 as
does Trevor Steven. Beckham also has ten in four different leagues.

So do Bobby Charlton and George Best. That's why I explicitly said that
one should be looking at the entire history of top-flight English
football, not just the artificial "Premiership" era.

The pre-Bundesliga days were sufficiently different that it makes since
to make record Bundesliga-only.

Schweinsteiger is currently on 7, so he'll probably join Kahn and Scholl
in April. Schweinsteiger's record has the added curiosity that he also has
7 cup titles - all 7 as part of doubles.

Søren Lerby has 9 (mainly NL). Zlatan officially has 9, 11 if you ask
Futbolmetrix. Puskás has 10.

What about players from unbalanced leagues? Oleksandr Shovkovskiy, GK for
Dynamo Kiev, has 12. They're leading by 5 points, so he could reach 13.

For this in particular it is kinda silly to make it Bundesliga only -
before the Bundesliga one or two club dominations were short lived
(Nuernberg/HSV in the 20s, Schalke in the 30s). Record pre-Bundesliga is
probably someone from Schalke with 5 or so.

They just won two in the 1950s and then two more in the 90s.
Respectable tally of four, but no record. Since Schalke won all of
their titles over a short period, Sven is probably right suggesting it
would be someone from them. But since FCB won so many in the 1994-2010
phase it is indeed Scholl and Kahn with the record (if you count just
championships, but FCB were also very successful in the Cup over this
phase, so that would just add to it).

I thought Kaiserslautern won more? Just checked, they did win 11
Oberliga titles from 1947 to 1963, but like you said, only two national
titles in that time (4 times runner ups in that time)

To MH: maybe someone from Berliner FC Dynamo, who won 10 in a row 79-88.
http://www.fussballdaten.de/ddr/meister/

To BD: I didn't check Oberliga. Maybe not relevant though since Germany
have had a national champion since circa 1900 (maybe different during
wars). In the North one HSV won every year except 1954. Funny that
there are HSV fans that should complain about Bayern's current dominance :-)

IIRC they only won in 51 and 53. No, we'd be looking at the likes of
Szepan and the Kuzorras for Schalke (34, 35, 37, 39, 40, 42), the only
alternative would be Nuernberg (20, 21, 24, 25, 27)

We didnt dominate financially. And you should beware of this example -
as HSV dominated the North (15 of 16 titles) HSV also struggled a lot at
the finals (only 1 title in 15 attempts).

Sort of like Bayern in Europe in the 1980s and 90s.
